[nysbirds-l] Pt Lookout Lark Sparrow - Directions and Photo

2016-01-01 Thread Alan Wells
Hi all,

Sorry for my poor initial directions, but I was trying to get the word out
quickly and am not very familiar with the landmarks at the Point. Here are
the more detailed directions:

At the end of Lido Blvd, Point Lookout, Nassau Co., enter the gate to
Fireman's Park. About 125 yards toward the water there is a small dirt path
on the right paralleling the Jones Inlet Channel. Follow this path. The bird
was first encountered about 75 yards along this path in a somewhat sandy
area. It was feeding in the path, but flew to a small bare tree (fallen over
a black pipe) about 10 feet off the right side of the path as I approached.
It remained there for a full 5 to 10 minutes while my entire group obtained
excellent views (bins not necessary!). GPS Lat/Lon coordinates are 40.59144,
-73.57622. When we decided to move on, it continued feeding along the path
a few yards in front of us. Finally, after about 100 yards of this, it
jumped to another small bare shrub about 3 yards of the right side of the
path. GPS Lat/Lon coordinates are 40.59068, -73.57659. It remained there as
we continued to walk by. It is a very sharp looking bird (see photo at
https://www.flickr.com/photos/awells48/albums, under eBird Photos ) and is
very cooperative.

[nysbirds-l] Eurasian Wigeons @ Jamaica Bay East Pond Queens County

2016-01-01 Thread Andrew Baksh
Wrapping up a January 1st 2016 day of birding, I decided I would leave some
juice in the tank for tomorrow's Southern Nassau CBC and so spent the late
afternoon sifting through the multitude of waterfowl on the East Pond at
Jamaica Bay.

While I could not turn any of the two Scaup species into something rarer, I did
manage to see two drake Eurasian Wigeons. Very likely the continuing
birds--although, (I think) only one was being reported as of late. Lisa
Scheppke, was able to get on one when she joined me later scoping from the
overlook. She also reported a flyby Raven on her way in to the East Pond.

Cheers,

2016-01-01 Thread David Jordet
Happy New Year!
Earlier today there was a single male SURF SCOTER less than 200 yards off
Bayville Beach adjacent to The Crescent Restaurant (Soundside Beach Park at
Bayville Ave and 8th St) in Long Island Sound in the village of Bayville north
of Oyster Bay, Nassau County.
Really nice views and low chop on west winds.

[nysbirds-l] DICKCISSEL, Southard's Pond Park (Suffolk Co.)

2016-01-01 Thread John Gluth
There is a 1st-winter male DICKCISSEL near the tennis courts at the southern
end of the park (Park Ave. entrance). It's loosely associating with a few Song
Sparrows, feeding in the short grass and bare ground between the courts and
bike path. Quite confiding, not flushing despite joggers and dog walkers
passing within 10-15 feet. I left it at ~3:15, in the capable hands of Pete
Morris whom I texted just after finding it. Good luck if you go.
Happy New Year!

[nysbirds-l] Cackling Geese @ Flushing Meadow Corona Park Queens County

2016-01-01 Thread Andrew Baksh
The two Cackling Geese continue at Flushing Meadow Corona Park in Queens. They
were observed feeding near the golf course, which is north east from where the
Lark and Clay-colored Sparrows have been frequenting.

Also noted were the continuing 3 Pine Warblers. As noted in previous posts
these birds are mostly seen in the vicinity of the "Garden of Meditation."

[nysbirds-l] Bayville Surf Scoter (Nassau)

2016-01-01 Thread David Jordet
Happy New Year!
Earlier today there was a single male SURF SCOTER less than 200 yards off
Bayville Beach adjacent to The Crescent Restaurant (Soundside Beach Park at
Bayville Ave and 8th St) in Long Island Sound in the village of Bayville north
of Oyster Bay, Nassau County.
Really nice views and low chop on west winds.
