[nysbirds-l] midtown Manhattan 1/4

2016-01-04 Thread Thomas Fiore
On the theme of lingering birds in midtown Manhattan (N.Y. City),
there were up to 6 Gray Catbirds, a female E. Towhee, Hermit Thrush,
Swamp Sparrow, several Song & several dozen White-throated Sparrows in
Bryant Park both Sunday & Monday, Jan. 3 & 4. In a few other mid-
Manhattan local parks including Madison Square and Union Square, there
seemed not to be that diverse a collection. Meanwhile in Central
Park, the 3 warbler species are still hanging in in respective areas
where they'd been (Wilson's at the Great Hill & Pool, Orange-crowned
at the n. side of E. 79 St. transverse, & Black-and-white in the area
near the W. 81 St. transverse, both sides, mostly east of the W.
Drive), at the same time that bone-chilling cold is, however briefly,
coming to the local area. Even should the warblers survive tonight &
all this month, it is February that would pose a greater challenge to
survival, as it's often the toughest month for certain birds.

It would be interesting to know if anyone's been out & about in the
areas where last year's W. Village Couch's Kingbird spent early winter.

Tom Fiore,
Manhattan

[nysbirds-l] Thrasher, Catbird, Towhee and Swamp Sparrow in Midtown today

2016-01-04 Thread Amy Simmons
Back to work in mid-town Manhattan, I thought I'd check out the "pocket park"
on W. 46th Street (btwn 5th and 6th Avenues, closer to 6th) this afternoon and
was nicely surprised by what I found:
1 Brown Thrasher (possibly two, but I couldn't confirm -- there has/has been a
pair here for a couple of months now)2 Gray Catbird (1 fanning it's tail and
picking through a garbage can -- the other didn't seem as bold and stayed
mostly in the bushes while I was there)1 Eastern Towhee (female, very skulky in
the underbrush on the western side of the bald cypress tree circle)1 Swamp
Sparrow (has also been present since Fall -- quite skittish)8 White-throated
Sparrows10 Rock Pigeons10 House Sparrows
Not bad for: (1) only 10 minutes, (2) January in Manhattan, (3) such a tiny
park, and (4) such a low temperature. A puddle of unfrozen water seems to have
formed on a gray plastic covering that Maintenance left in the underbrush on
the western side of the bald cypress tree circle, and I noticed many of the
birds drinking from it. Despite the cold weather, the birds were very active
-- frequently flying in and out of the sheltering bushes.

[nysbirds-l] R-h Woodpecker, Blydenburgh Park (Suffolk)

2016-01-04 Thread Douglas Futuyma
The immature RED-HEADED WOOD[PECKER found on the Smithtown CBC made itself
almost immediately evident when I looked for it this morning. It is at the
parking lot in the northeastern part of Blydenburgh County Park, at the end
of New Mill Road. A flock of 9 PURPLE FINCHES was also present, near the
toilet block. New Mill Road is easily accessed from Route 25 (Main Street)
in Smithtown, by driving south on Brookside Drive for a short distance and
then turning right.
