[nysbirds-l] REMINDER - County & State Listing - Only a week until the deadline!

2016-02-21 Thread Carena Pooth
Hey Listers!

The NYSOA (New York State Ornithological Association) County and State
Listing Project is accepting data for 2015. If you want to get your numbers
into the 2015 report, don't miss the March 1 deadline. Data may be submitted
online, via fax, via email, or via USPS.

If you're new to this and would like to know more, please read on.

The County and State Listing Project is a fun, friendly competition run by
NYSOA. Started in 1992, it continues to attract new participants every year.
Some of the first ones have not missed a single year since the beginning
(watch out, you might get hooked!). The ultimate objective is to encourage
birders of all levels to get out and bird the many varied habitats of New
York State and report their sightings to local clubs, NYSOA regional
editors, and eBird. The competition injects some additional fun into the
important "work" of birding and reporting the birds we see all over NYS.

So here's how it works. After the close of each calendar year, participants
send in their LIFE list totals for all of NYS, the 10 Kingbird regions,
and/or the 62 counties, and/or the just-added PELAGIC ZONE (PZ). In
addition, we have one YEAR list category - for the entire state. You can
send in just one number or as many as 75, or anywhere in between - it's your
choice depending on where you've birded and what records you've kept. A
compilation is produced annually and published in NYSOA's newsletter and
also on the NYSOA website at http://nybirds.org/ProjCountyLists.html. Forms,
a map of the ten Kingbird regions, and details on the new Pelagic Zone are
available on that web page also.

Join in on the fun and see where you stand - statewide, region by region,
county by county - in comparison with other birders all over the state (and
even outside the state). To see what the annual compilation looks like,
check out the archive at http://nybirds.org/ProjCountyLists.html.

But don't miss the deadline! And remember, no reports submitted in previous
years are automatically carried into the next. If you want to be listed, you
must submit your report, even if your numbers haven't changed since the last
one you sent in.

If you've already submitted your 2015 report, thanks!

If not, I await your data with bated breath!

Carena Pooth

NYSOA

PS - The fine print: The only requirement to participate is that you be a
2016 member of (a) NYSOA, (b) one of NYSOA's member clubs, or (c) the NYS
Young Birders Club.

[nysbirds-l] migrants, Central Park, NYC 2/21

2016-02-21 Thread Thomas Fiore

Sunday, 21 February, 2016

At least a bit of migration occurred last night with American Woodcock
showing, or more accurately, flushing in several areas of the northern
end of Central Park (Manhattan, N.Y. City) as well as what seemed a
slight up-tick in numbers of juncos & some sparrows. Also a small
number of male Red-winged Blackbirds, a couple of them giving song. A
fair chance there are a few other early migrants about as well.

[nysbirds-l] Tufted Duck - Patchogue Lake (Suffolk)

2016-02-21 Thread Derek Rogers
Just located a Tufted Duck on Patchogue Lake. Currently trying to determine
whether or not this is the Blue Point Avenue bird that I found on 12 Feb.

The proximity between both locations would favor the same individual but I'm
getting the sense this may be a different bird (longer, more intact tuft from
all angles, more white on flanks). Closest viewing is from the south side of
West Roe Blvd. looking south from the bridge. It's worth noting that a fishing
boat spooked a flock of Scaup from their usual location at the very south end
of the lake along the north side of Holbrook Road, so it's likely they'll
return to this spot.

If anyone follows up and gets decent photos I'd be grateful if you could send
them along to me as this can be important in determining the number of Suffolk
Tufteds we are dealing with.

Best,
Derek Rogers

[nysbirds-l] Montauk LI

2016-02-21 Thread Andrew Baksh
Highlights from a full day of birding out east in Montauk Long Island with Tom
Burke and Gail Benson.

Starting at the point with an early morning seawatch. Many Razorbills were
present providing nice views both sitting and in flight. All 3 Scoter species
were present in the thousands. Decent number of Bonaparte Gulls were seen early
but thinned quickly out as the morning wore on. Northern Gannets were quite
sparse and between Tom, Gail and myself, we might have seen a grand total of
"4" over an hour of sea watching. As far as land birds, there was a movement of
American Robins, sprinkled with Redwing Blackbirds in the area. Earlier, I had
put in a search for the previously reported Yellow-breasted Chat with no luck
but did coax out of the dense undergrowth 4 Eastern Towhees.

After receiving a report from Ken and Sue Feustel about the Thick-billed Murre.
Tom, Gail and I put in a search along with Shai Mitra, Pat Lindsay, Phil and
Holly Cambhi to no avail. After giving the Murre chase a break, 3 of us birded
the bluff at Camp Hero where after a long search, we picked up the continuing
drake King Eider. Our Eider search was interrupted by a message from the
Feustels who saved us "the blushes" by re-finding the Murre near the East Side
jetty of Montauk inlet.

After enjoying views of the Thick-billed Murre we went back to Camp Hero where
after a long search, we finally got views of the drake King Eider. This bird
was very difficult to pick out in the surf and distance.

A search for Red-necked Grebe did not pan out despite covering several areas.
Nevertheless, we did manage to pick up 1 adult and 1 sub adult Iceland Gulls
both seen near the inlet.

Another look at the inlet in the afternoon provided nice looks at the
Thick-billed Murre which we enjoyed with Gary Strauss. The Murre, was being
eyed by a few Great Black-backed Gulls. No doubt, thinking about adding a tick
to "their rare bird kill list."

A stop at Napeague was not productive with no sign of Larry the Lesser
Black-back or any "Owlthingie."

One last note, Karlo and Alison Mirth who we ran into. Reported a dark looking
Red-tailed Hawk. We kept an eye out for it but did not see anything suspicious.
Birders in the Montauk area might want to keep an eye out.

Cheers,
