[nysbirds-l] Northern Shrike at Fort Tilden

2016-03-03 Thread Joseph O'Sullivan
I spotted a first winter Northern Shrike at the road between the Riis Park
Golf Course and Fort Tilden, suoth of the fire house and north of the
beach. I saw it last perched in a tree then flying west into Fort Tilden
around 5:00 this afternoon.

[nysbirds-l] Oak Beach & Sunken Meadow State Park Birds (Suffolk Co.)

2016-03-03 Thread Ken Feustel
The Eared Grebe was present at about 8:45AM this morning, as viewed from the
Senior Citizen parking lot on Oak Beach Road. The bird was actively feeding
near the Sore Thumb, gradually making its way east to our location. Sue and I
and Pat Palladino enjoyed good lucks at the bird as it joined a pair of Horned
Grebes, allowing direct comparison and photographs. From there Sue and I
traveled north to Sunken Meadow State Park, where we went to see the rafts of
waterfowl that have been present at the mouth of the Nissequogue River since
late January. On our way down the beach an Immature Bald Eagle flew east over
the mouth of the river, flushing not only thousands of ducks (mostly Greater
Scaup), but thousand of gulls feeding on the low tide in the mussel beds at the
mouth of the river. We scoped through the gulls, locating a first winter
Glaucous Gull as well as a second/third winter Lesser Black-backed Gull.

Good Birding,
