Re: [nysbirds-l] Jefferson County Smew - Origins

2016-03-04 Thread Richard Guthrie
Thanks, Nathan.

Thinking: Shouldn't there be some sort of penalty (license revocation -
where applicable? monetary? ) if, no matter what the cause, for
unauthorized releases of wildlife. waterfowl, cage birds, fish, reptiles,
insects, etc.

Hasn't that sort of thing been the cause of many of our invasive species
problems we suffer through nowadays?

[nysbirds-l] Jefferson County Smew - Origins

2016-03-04 Thread Nathan Goldberg
Hi All,

I wanted to share a post that was on the Ontario Listserv back on December
22nd, written about the Alut Island Smew that was present around the same
time across the NY border in Ontario. In a post by Frank Pinilla, he
cautioned birders about counting the female/first winter male Smew:

"I then searched for Smew with waterfowl collectors and found a
Rosemary Miner who owns a huge aviary in New York State, about 50km south
of Buffalo, with a direct line to the Lake Erie shoreline being about 40km
as the Smew flies. I decided to e-mail Ms. Miner to ask whether she's
lost any waterfowl lately, and the response was a bit of a shocker,
she immediately said that she had lost a female Smew approximately 1 month
ago when a tree fell on the aviary and tore it open. She does not pinion
her birds...the two aviaries are so large that she has her ducks & geese
flying from one to another - her website claims that she has the largest
aviary in the world."

Though there is a chance this bird is not the same as the late December
Smew, it is only about 70 miles down the same river (the St. Lawrence) from
where it was seen in 2015.

You can read the post on the December post on the Smew's provenance here:
http://ontbirds.ca/pipermail/birdalert_ontbirds.ca/Week-of-Mon-20151221/079413.html

Hate to rain on people's parade, but personally, I would not count this
bird, at least with the information present at the moment. If this bird
turns out to be a male though, things could change!

Good Birding,

[nysbirds-l] Smew

2016-03-04 Thread William Purcell
Nick Leone found a Smew this morning at Fishers Landing in Jefferson County NY.
Several of us saw the bird later in the morning from Chalk’s Marina in Fishers
Landing, a few photos are at

https://www.flickr.com/photos/14186021@N04/25142357369/in/dateposted-public/

The Smew was first seen in the closer section of open water until a Bald Eagle
put the ducks up. We refound the bird in the more distant section of open river
but it eventually returned to the closer patch of water. None of us has any
prior experience with Smew so we should appreciate any info as to why the bird
might be hybrid or something else entirely. Provenance, of course, is another
issue.

[nysbirds-l] Corona Park Clay-colored Sparrow continues/ Queens Co.

2016-03-04 Thread Sean Sime
A brief stop at Flushing Meadows/Corona Park earlier today yielded the
wintering Clay-colored Sparrow associating with a small Dark-eyed Junco
flock. The birds were in the same general area as previously reported and
due to the snow covered grass all the birds were feeding along the roadside
edges. I saw no sign of the Lark Sparrow.
A small group of Brant were the only geese of note and 91 Great-blacked
Gulls seemed like a decent number considering there were few other large
gulls.
An adult Bald Eagle put up all the waterfowl and gulls as it drifted south
over Meadow Lake.

Good birding,

Sean Sime

[nysbirds-l] Smew Reported in Jefferson County

2016-03-04 Thread Andrew Baksh
I am not sure if this was already reported to the listserves. It just showed up
in my inbox. See the link below to an eBird checklist.

No word on whether this one has bands (see Smewgate on the NJ listserve).
