[nysbirds-l] Cattle Egret @ Fort Tidlen Queens Co...

2016-10-25 Thread Andrew Baksh
While trying to get in on a pretty much non existent migration flight at Fort
Tilden, I stumbled upon a Cattle Egret loafing on the soccer/rugby fields. This
one showed even less breeding plumes on its head than Rob Jett's Floyd Bennett
Field bird and looked more like John Young's bird from Van Cortlandt Park.

Today's CAEG (Cattle Egret) makes it 3 seen for the month of October and 4 in
total for the year for me, having seen one on the East Pond earlier in the
year. With Peter Dorosh's report of another CAEG documented by Gus Keri at Bush
Terminal Pier Park in Brooklyn. We could have at the moment 3-4 CAEG in play
(not sure if the Bronx bird is still being seen). I wonder how many more we are
missing that are out there in our area.

Cheers,

[nysbirds-l] Large Numbers of Laughing Gulls Rockaway Inlet, Brooklyn/Queens

2016-10-25 Thread Shaibal Mitra
At dawn this morning there was a spectacular fly-out of Laughing Gulls at Plum
Beach, Kings, with hundreds of birds streaming east to west along the entire
width of Rockaway Inlet, joined by hundreds more arriving from the the creeks
to the north. By the time I left, the flight had stopped, but Laughing Gulls
were visible in numbers everywhere I could see, along all shorelines and
feeding in flocks all over the inlet. My overall estimate is 3,000 birds.

I was also surprised to count 88 Royal Terns, with 73 resting on a bar at Plum
at one time, plus 15 scattered around the inlet.

I had to leave before satisfying myself that no Franklin's Gull was present,
and also before the passerine morning flight got going. Highlights of the last
were 23 American Pipits.

[nysbirds-l] Central Park, NYC 10/24

2016-10-25 Thread Thomas Fiore
Extralimitally, A Gray Kingbird that's been present at Hyannisport,
Massachusetts was seen again on Monday 10/24; a Sprague's Pipit seen
on Sunday 10/23 at Westport, Connecticut was not re-found the next day
- that pipit was found near the shores of Long Island Sound, and was
viewed & documented by many observers; both birds have been well-
reported on their respective state birding list-serves.

Central Park, Manhattan, N.Y. City
Monday, 24 October, 2016 -

Among the dozen Warbler species present Monday in Central Park was an
Orange-crowned Warbler at the Great Hill in the park's north end, as
well as a White-eyed Vireo in the same location, both photographed by
Lynne Hertzog. Some of the other warbler species present have been in
the south-most part of the park as well as in many scattered locations
therein, some species may be represented by just single individuals,
yet there are also a few species still in modest -if scattered- numbers.

Chrysanthemums ('mums') in the Conservatory Garden -especially, even
with others in other areas- of Central Park are starting to peak, with
lush color- and a 'must'-see are many of the trees in the park as they
attain autumn colors; a great "sour gum" (Tupelo) tree in the heart of
the Ramble among those to seek out in coming days and weeks.

"A thing is right when it tends to preserve the integrity, stability
and beauty of the biotic community. It is wrong when it tends
otherwise." - Aldo Leopold (1887–1948), U.S. wildlife biologist,
conservationist, professor, author, best known for his book "A Sand
County Almanac" (1949), which has sold more than two million copies.

Good cold-front birding,
