[nysbirds-l] Bryant Park - Lincoln Sparrow
More food stands remain open post-holiday season in Bryant Park than have in past winters. So on this unusually balmy day I was curious to see what birds have hung around after the first major snows and all the underbrush has been cleared for fresh dark mulching. The sparrow population has definitely declined - I couldn’t find any more Swamp Sparrows, but there was still one lively looking Catbird in the southwest corner and a not-very-shy Lincoln Sparrow jerkily running along the southern fence. [nysbirds-l] Central Park - a late report
I couldn't get to a computer to report 5 Ring-necked Ducks (M) @ Reservoir 1/22/17 Sun. about 1:30pm. The weather and not being well kept me from returning. I've been waiting for a Ring-neck duck all season. 1/20/17 Fri., an odd duck appeared swimming with a flock of Ruddies. It's head was entirely white and the back and wings were splotched with dull red, the breast a solid dull reddish color.Another Birder, Carl, was observing this anomyly from another side of NW corner. I looked for the birds later but never saw it again. Carl and I thought it was a leucistic Ruddy Duck. -- NYSbirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsWELCOME.htm http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsRULES.htm http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/nysbirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/NYSBirds-L 3) http://birding.aba.org/maillist/NY01 Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --

[nysbirds-l] Barrows Goldeneye on Staten Island
Dave Eib and Seth Wollney found a female Barrows Goldeneye on the pond at Moravian Cemetery. This is exactly where it was seen a few years back so most likely a returning bird. [nysbirds-l] Brooklyn Black Vultures right now
There are currently 9 Black Vultures in a tight flock bouncing around just above treetop level over the northern edge of Greenwood Cemetery in Brooklyn. There were 5 an hour ago that drifted south over the center of the cemetery, but Indont know if those individuals are part of this group of 9. Good Birding -Doug Gochfeld. [nysbirds-l] Manhattan NYC & lack of storm-birds, 1/23-24
Monday-Tuesday, 23-24 January, 2017 It seemed from some searching along East & Hudson rivers from 125th Street to The Battery (south tip of Manhattan island, and a linear distance of much more than 5 miles), on Monday & Tuesday (yes, in the wind, rain & drizzles) as well as peeks at the reservoir in Central Park and elsewhere, there was no push or 'fall-out' of any sort (of birds) with regard to the nor'easter storm that just past. I'm taking an uninformed guess that there were no exceptional finds anywhere in the region, either, from this storm - unless some are yet to be discovered or reported? If anything in the parts of Manhattan waters - as above - there were fewer waterbirds, gulls & etc. in areas that may often have numbers; a very modest number of Ring-billed Gulls feeding on a few open lawns led to nothing of additional interest there, & at the reservoir in Central Park, a paucity of birds (as somewhat expected in such storms, as there is little shelter there). good birding - & getting more-accustomed to using Myrtle, Audubon's, and (far southwest of NY) Goldman's, as proper common names to what many are still calling "Yellow-rumped" Warbler[s].
