[nysbirds-l] Notes from Jones Beach

2017-02-20 Thread syschiff
Jones Beach West End, 20 February

A RAZORBILL was feeding along the inlet rocks just before the =
fisherman's parking lot. Beautiful close up views.

Approaching the inlet walking along the ocean, the sky was filled with =
NORTHERN GANNETS (about 150) fishing and plunging into the ocean. I =
followed a half dozen flying closely in a line (a bit different from the =
usual random movements), so I followed them. The lead bird suddenly =
pulled up and dove into the water followed one by one by the next 5. An =
amazing precision performance. Made my day.

Drifting back to the parking lot, we heard a singing HORNED LARK in the =
upper swale. The lark flocks have thinned out in the last week. When I =
heard the song.I realized the birds are not gone, but are on the nest =
now. Lark breeding begins the first of February in the upper dunes at =
the West End lot and in front of the Nature Center.. Waiting patiently, =
we finally located the bird and showing its signature horns.

[nysbirds-l] Black Guillemot yes, Little Gull no

2017-02-20 Thread Joshua Malbin
I have not seen anyone else post an update about these birds today: the
Black Guillemot was seen in its usual place by about a dozen observers
around midday today. I was not able to see the Little Gull nearby, and as
far as I know no one else was either, though a Black-headed Gull was
present.

Oswego County
2/14: A LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL was again seen at the Lock on the Oswego

One and sometimes two GREAT GRAY OWLS continue to be seen daily at Robert
Moses State Park near Massena in St. Lawrence county. Today’s sighting was on
Hawkins Point Road.

Migrants this week.
An OSPREY seen this week in Onondaga County is most likely a migrant.
Increasing numbers of RED-WINGED BLACKBIRDS and TURKEY VULTURES, birds usually
seen here in small numbers in winter, seem to indicate these are also probably
migrants,

Hi Ryan. Could you be more specific about the locality, doesn't come up on
Google Maps. Presumably east of Ditch Plains? How do you access? Walk from DP?

Long Island Sound this this morning was very calm.

Prospect Point is about a 3/4 mile walk west from the Sands Point Preserve. If
you plan on going there, my advice is to check the tides first. At high tide,
like this morning, you will not be able to walk past the first private homes
west of the preserve. The water will be anywhere from ankle deep to knee deep
on a regular high tide. You can tip-toe (like I did today) on top of the home’s
12-inch wide seawall but this is quite dangerous even though it’s only about a
six-foot drop into the water. (It’s also trespassing). I only carried
binoculars today, a scope would really be pushing your luck on top of this wall.

You can park in the lot in front of Hempstead House ( the western most castle
in the preserve) and make your way, by hook or by crook, down to the beach as
there are no longer any steps going down from the seawall. (storms keep washing
away the stairs).
The seawall in the preserve is much wider but it is in a deplorable condition;
very dangerous to walk on; stick to the beach unless you’re an idiot like me
who insists on proving to nobody that I can walk on top of it. :)

Also today, the now resident pair of Common Ravens were out and about around
the main parking lot in the preserve. I’m hoping that they pick a breeding spot
on top of the one of the castles or the water tower.

Cheers!!

[nysbirds-l] Manhattan NYC - Canvasbacks (2/19) - addenda@dusk

2017-02-20 Thread Thomas Fiore
Manhattan island, N.Y. City
Sunday, 19 February, 2017 - at 5:50 p.m. + in the evening, i.e.-

at dusk, or about 30 minutes past sunset, the 17 Canvasbacks
(including 10 bright adult males) near Riverbank State Park were on
the Hudson (very near shore) on the north side, or adjacent with about
West 146th Street, rather than the south side where most sightings had
been reported from. I was passing by and noticed the flock there on a
late-day bicycle ride of the Hudson river-green-way path which passes
all of this area.

At about 3:45 p.m., a sub-adult Bald Eagle was moving over central
Harlem (USA) going roughly west-northwest, perhaps moving across from
the western-most zone of Long Island Sound over towards the Hudson or
perhaps, New Jersey. The eagle was viewed from east Harlem, closer to
the East River-Harlem River confluence.

good birding,

Tom Fiore
