Re: [nysbirds-l] South Fork LI: coastal gannet and scoter flight
Pete Morris and I spent three hours seawatching from Field 2 at Robert Moses State Park this morning starting at 07:00. Despite challenging conditions, decent seabird movement was evident. Like Angus we saw a strong movement of scoters with over 17,000 counted during the period, nearly all heading east to west. Approximately 90% were Black Scoter, with much smaller numbers of Surf and only double-digits of White-winged. Unlike observers to the east we encountered fair numbers of terns and jaegers, with a handful of Forster's, Common, and Royal Terns generally moving east to west. Additionally, at least three Parasitic Jaegers were seen, all early in the morning. About 15 Bonaparte's Gulls were present, showing no clear movement in either direction. Though no tubenoses were noted during our watch, Taylor Sturm observed a very close Manx Shearwater from the same vantage at approximately 17:00 heading from east to west. With strong easterlies projected to continue until 03:00, even the southwesterly winds forecast for tomorrow morning may be productive if birds are attempting to exit the New York Bight early in the AM. eBird checklist here: http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist/S40200631 Brent Bomkamp Eatons Neck On Sun, Oct 29, 2017 at 11:44 AM, Angus Wilsonwrote: > The onshore winds produced a good East to West flight of sea duck and > gannets this morning but with modest diversity. [nysbirds-l] Bird Island Pier 10/28 & 10/29
Yesterday I had 1 Snow Bunting, 4 Sanderlings and 1 Spotted Sandpiper on the Bird Island Pier in Buffalo. Today there were 5 Sanderlings, the Spotted Sandpiper, but no bunting. Sorry, apparently, there is no provision for videos on eBird. [nysbirds-l] Heckscher SP (Suffolk): American Golden Plover, Long-billed Dowitcher
I went to Heckscher SP (Suffolk) from 11:30 AM to about 1PM today. It rained steadily but it was 64 degrees. There was a nice variety of shorebirds providing very close views. The highlights were 3 American Golden Plovers and a very nondescript Long-billed Dowitcher that I initially could not pin down to species. Later, Ken Thompson and Mike Cooper showed up and also couldn’t provide a positive ID on a very wet bird. Finally, the bird picked up and Mike was able to hear and make an audible identification. Thanks Mike!! Also present were roughly 40+ Dunlin, 1 Semipalmated Plover, and many Killdeer, Greater Yellowlegs, and Black-bellied Plovers. A female Pintail was also in the main pool. I posted a few lousy photos to the eBird checklist of the Golden Plover and Dunlin. I tried to post a decent video of the dowitcher, too, but eBird would not accept MP4 format. I tried converting to MP3 but it only took the audio portion. If anyone knows how to convert MP4/upload to ebird, let me know and I’ll post it. [nysbirds-l] South Fork LI: coastal gannet and scoter flight
The onshore winds produced a good East to West flight of sea duck and gannets this morning but with modest diversity.
