This is the Syracuse Area Rare Bird Alert for the week of October 17, 2022 Highlights: --- SANDHILL CRANE BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON CACKLING GOOSE SURF SCOTER BLACK SCOTER RUFF HUDSONIAN GODWIT LONG-BILLED DOWITCHER WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER FORSTER’S TERN LAPLAND LONGSPUR FOX SPARROW LINCOLN’S SPARROW PINE SISKIN EVENING GROSBEAK RED CCROSSBILL Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge (MNWR) and Montezuma Wetlands Complex (MWC) A HUDSONIAN GODWIT continues this week at the Visitor’s Center and at Knox-Marsellus Marsh. 10/20: A female RUFF was seen at the Armitage Road fields and continues thru 10/22. 10/22: A SEMI-PALMATED SANDPIPER, a WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER, a PECTORAL SANDPIPER and 2 LAPLAND LONGSPURS were at Armitage Road. 9 LONG-BILLED DOWITCHERS and 80 SANDHILL CRANES were seen from East Road. Cayuga County 10/17: A PINE SISKIN was seen at Fair Haven State Park. 10/29: A FORSTER’S TERN and a BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER were seen at Fair Haven. 10/21: A BLACK SCOTER and 2 WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPERS were seen at Fair Haven. Oswego County 10/17: A HUDSONIAN GODWIT was see at Selkirk Shores State Park on Lake Ontario. It was present on the 18th. also. 10/20: 15 SURF SCOTERS were seen from the bluff at Derby Hill. 10/22: 7 Shorebird species including BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER and WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER were seen at Selkirk Shores. Onondaga County 10/17: A LINCOLN’S SPARROW was seen at the Boat Launch and Visitor’s Center on the west shore of Onondaga Lake. 10/23: 2 CACKLING GEESE were seen at Old Fly Marsh Preserve in Pompey. A BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON was seen at Lakeview Point on the West Shore Trail of Onondaga Lake. Oneida County 10/22: A FOX SPARROW was seen at the Dwyer Road Swamp north of Verona. A SURF SCOTER was seen at the Verona Beach Lighthouse. [nysbirds-l] Central Park, NYC - Sunday, 10/23 - 14 warbler species
Central Park, Manhattan, N.Y. City - Sunday, October 23rd - Briefly, at least 14 warbler species were found and seen by many observers in the park, for Sunday. Slightly more than that number of warbler species were found for all of New York County on the day. Further local reports to come, including from other areas in the county. Thanks to the many independent birders and the participants and leaders of guided walks done for not-for-profit org’s, who've again added/contributed many of these sightings. Ovenbird*, Northern Waterthrush, Black-and-white Warbler*, Tennessee Warbler*, Nashville Warbler*, Common Yellowthroat*, American Redstart, Cape May Warbler*, Northern Parula*, Blackpoll Warbler, Black-throated Blue Warbler*, Palm Warbler*, Pine Warbler,* [Myrtle] Yellow-rumped Warbler*. A few of these include individual birds which have been lingering for many days in the same general areas of Central Park. A fair number of these species also have been showing in other locations in Manhattan, and some also on the outlying islands of the county.
