[nysbirds-l] Peregrine Falcon at the Tappan Zee Bridge

2011-05-02 Thread Beverly Robertson
I had a Peregrine Falcon sitting atop a lamp post on the Tappan Zee Bridge this
morning around 9:30am. A nice change from all the Greater Black-backed Gulls.

[nysbirds-l] Southern Orange County birding

2011-01-16 Thread Beverly Robertson
I spent this morning making the rounds of the southern Orange county
hotspots.
Skinner Lane had 1 Light Rough-legged Hawk; 1 male Harrier; 24 Horned
Larks; a flock of 57 (!) Snow Buntings; a plentitude of Crows; 1 Gold
Finch; a handful of Sparrows that darted off the road as the car
approached.

Liberty Loop had 3 Rough-legged Hawks.
Missionland Road had 2 Savannah Sparrows; a mixed flock of 8 Horned
Larks and 1 Snow Bunting and hundreds and hundreds of Crows in the
corn field and 1 male Harrier.
The pond between Minisink and Westown had hundreds of Canada Geese; 4
Snow Geese, 2 Mute Swans and 1 very odd hybrid goose. I need to go
back with a scope.

[nysbirds-l] 6 Short-eared Owls at Wallkill NWR's Liberty Loop

2011-01-04 Thread Beverly Robertson
At 5 o'clock last night the owls rose from behind the kiosk. Look far
and look deep. First there was 1, then 3, then 5 swirled in the air
above tree-line offering great views in the orange glow. At one point
I had 4 in the same bin view. When I left at 5:30, there was another
one over the fields across the road. Lots of Harriers and 1 Rough-
legged Hawk too.

[nysbirds-l] 6 Golden Plovers on Skinner Lane

2010-08-29 Thread Beverly Robertson
Diane Brown and I had them in an onion field on the right hand side of
the road just after the first barn when the road becomes dirt at 11:30
am. They were panting in the heat. We saw them flying around before
they landed.

[nysbirds-l] Pileated WP in White Plains

2010-03-04 Thread Beverly Robertson
I have been hearing a Pileated Woodpecker every morning this week at
my office on Mamaroneck Avenue in White Plains. Doubting myself, I
came to the conclusion I need my audio memory checked, when I actually
saw it fly by yesterday as I walked in from the parking lot. This is
a yard bird for me in NJ, but not one I expected in White Plains.
What a terrific way to start the day!
