Adult male.  Arrived late yesterday afternoon.  Flaring to red,  black gorget,
thin feathers standing out , rather than as a Ruby-throated would be.

[nysbirds-l] Interesting gull at Hither Hills State Park, Montauk

2013-07-11 Thread Joe T
Had this guy hanging out with the Greater Black backeds on the beach today at
Hither Hills State Park. I don't know much about gulls and the journalist in me
is looking for second, third and fourth opinions. From those I've asked, I've
heard Herring, possible Iceland x Herring, possible things much rarer.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/98746025@N07/

Leaving it to you all. The bird was smaller than the GBBs, and zooming on the
picture will reveal a pink base to the bill. Pink legs. Struck me because of
how white it was. So, so much whiter than I'm used to seeing in July.

Thanks for the help!

[nysbirds-l] Cupsogue 7/4

2013-07-04 Thread Joe T
Red-necked Stint and 2-3 Arctic Terns present on the flats in the early
afternoon (sorry, didnt have phone or watch on me). Lots of birders. A few let
me see through their scopes. Many thanks.

Also at least 5 Black Terns, 3 Royal Terns and numbers of Roseates. The
Roseates, and only them, were all flying very erratically. The wind wasnt
terrible and all the other terns seemed fine. Someone said maybe they were
catching insects.

Everyone was still waiting for the Elegant to show when I left after not much
time.

[nysbirds-l] Cupsogue 7/4

2013-07-04 Thread Joe T
Red-necked Stint and 2-3 Arctic Terns present on the flats in the early
afternoon (sorry, didnt have phone or watch on me). Lots of birders. A few let
me see through their scopes. Many thanks.

Also at least 5 Black Terns, 3 Royal Terns and numbers of Roseates. The
Roseates, and only them, were all flying very erratically. The wind wasnt
terrible and all the other terns seemed fine. Someone said maybe they were
catching insects.

Everyone was still waiting for the Elegant to show when I left after not much
time.

Looking at one of the Ruff right now from a spit just south of the North Island

Also nice are a few Gull-billed Terns flying around.

[nysbirds-l] Ross Goose - Yes

2011-11-27 Thread Joe T
The ROSS' GOOSE was present at the edge of the driving range's lawn at Brooklyn
Golf Center, just across the street from Floyd Bennett Field this afternoon
through 5pm in the fading light.

It was hanging out with 17 Canadas.  I pulled into the golf center's parking
lot, parked and walked down to the last bench on the range to see the birds;
they were not visible from the street.

Honestly, I thought the bird would be a little smaller, but this being my first
Ross', I'm nowhere near an expert on the ID.  Bill and head shape distinctive,
and sticks out like a sore thumb with the big, brown and black canadas.

Good luck to all who go,

The Dickcissel was still present at the Boat Basin parking lot this afternoon

Once in the HUGE parking lot for the train station (in a car or on foot), go
to the extreme south end, so you can't go any further or you'd be in the

[nysbirds-l] Hooded Crow - YES

2011-06-22 Thread Joe T
Just had the Hooded Crow with a few other birders at 1:30pm in the parking lot
at Crookes Point.  The bird seems content in the area even amidst the constant
flow of mockingbirds harassing it.  I even witnessed a Laughing Gull having a
problem with it.
Conversation with a pair of joggers that frequent the area resulted in them
saying the funny looking crow has been in the area for about 2 weeks now.  Very
obliging bird - allowed great looks.

[nysbirds-l] Common Ground Dove and Norther Shrike update

2010-11-01 Thread Joe T
I arrived at Captree around 12:10pm to a small group of birders already on
the Common Ground Dove, which was giving good views.  The group dispersed at
12:25 and I was left viewing the bird alone until 12:35 when it took off,
flying up over my head and across the parking lot, eventually disappearing over
the trees in the direction of the dumpsters/distant flagpole.  I stayed around
for 20 minutes and the bird did not return.     On another note, I was able to
see the Northern Shrike at Jones Beach at 1:45pm.  The bird was offering
distant views from the boardwalk behind the Nature Center.  The bird would
perch on the Japanese Black Pines and sticks coming out of the dunes, but
sometimes flies down and out of sight, so patience is required.
Real good day!JT

Re: [nysbirds-l] Prothonotary Warbler yes

2010-10-25 Thread Joe T
I apologize to any readers of my last post who found my report ambiguous.  The
Prothonotary Warbler I was referring to is the bird that has been being seen
recently in front of the NY Public Library on 5th Avenue in Manhattan.  Hope
this clears things up.

The Prothonotary Warbler was seen very easily this afternoon by many observers
between the hours of Noon and 1pm.  It really does stick out like a sore thumb.

Good luck and enjoyJT

[nysbirds-l] Jones Beach Clay-clored Sp +

2010-10-08 Thread Joe T
Had a gorgeous afternoon to work with at Jones Beach today.  The skies were
clear and the weather was breezy and crisp.  Lots of sparrows around the
hedgegrow, with the highlight being a Clay-colored Sparrow (with 2 eyes), mixed
in with a flock of white-throats, fields and chipping.  Had a probable Vesper
as well, but could not get a good enough look at the bird before it fled to
make a positive ID.  There were virtually no shorebirds on the sandbar at the
boat basin, so I checked the Swale (which is becoming more of a Swamp), where I
was rewarded with two each of White-rumped Sandpiper and Pectoral Sandpiper.
Nice to see the Pects.  While sitting in the sand admiring the view, a Northern
Harrier very fittingly soared overhead, through the constant swarm of swallows,
and eventually glided elegantly out of sight.  Also had a Merlin on the way in.
 Great day to be out.

[nysbirds-l] Floyd Ben. Field 10/4

2010-10-04 Thread Joe T
A bright Orange-crowned Warbler in the community gardens was the highlight of
my wet afternoon trip to Floyd Bennett Field today.  Besides that songbirds
were rather scarce.  34 Black-bellied Plovers and 15 Killdeer were visible in
various large puddles on the runways, and a lone Kestrel flew over as well.

[nysbirds-l] Staten Island

2009-12-10 Thread Joe T
Hi all,

While I have nothing new to add, and all these birds have been reported
already, I thought this coming fact was worth noting.  For a birder visiting
Staten Island, the following birds can be seen rather easily in well under a
single day:

Summer Tanager (Clove Lakes Park)
Red-headed Woodpecker (Clove Lakes Park)
Cackling Goose (2- Mt. Loretto)
Rufous Hummingbird (private residence)

Along with an OC Warbler spotted yesterday at Clove Lakes, the seemingly always
present Lesser Black-backed Gull at Arden Avenue, and other local birds, I
would say right now Staten Island's definitely worth the trip.

Good birding

[nysbirds-l] Summer Tanager, RH Woodpecker, more - Staten Island

2009-12-05 Thread Joe T
- The SUMMER TANAGER continued this morning at Clove Lakes Park on Staten
Island. The bird is hanging out behind the SECOND bridge below the Martling Ave
waterfall. There is a red bridge just past the falls and then further down, a
white stone bridge. Look for the Tanager in the woods just behind the stone
bridge. The bird is a suspected hatching year male.
- The young RED-HEADED WOODPECKER also continues, this bird just behind the RED
bridge. There is a small clearing in the woods just before what is known as
Brooke's Pond. The bird has been seen in this clearing with Red-bellied and
Downy Woodpeckers.
- Red-breasted Nuthatch (heard)
- Great Blue Heron
- Northern Pintail (female, with Mallards)

[nysbirds-l] Rufous Hummingbird on Staten Island - yes

2009-10-12 Thread Joe T
Hi all,

Got great looks at the Rufous Hummingbird today on Grymes Hill in Staten Island.
The bird is very reliable and feeds constantly on the many flowers in backyard.
I was there from 12:00-1:00pm and had the bird almost the entire time at point
blank range.  Howie is a great birder as well as host and welcomes any birders
who want to see "Teddy" the Rufuous with open arms.

[nysbirds-l] Cupsogue 8/15, Whimbrel +

2009-08-15 Thread Joe T
Hi all,

Birded Cupsogue today on the rising tide, and was treated to a nice variety
of birds including 15 species of shorebird, highlighted by a single WHIMBREL.
Besides the Whimbrel, good numbers of the usuals especially B..B. Plovers,
Yellowlegs and Semipalmated Sandpipers. Also 15 Red Knot.  Also good for me was
multiple Seaside Sparrows, which I can never seem to get good looks at.
Also of note, by the birders I spoke to in the parking lot: a few Black
Terns and 3 Royal Terns, however, I could not come up with them.
