[nysbirds-l] Passerina Bunting sp. Ulster County
Just came across this intriguing eBird report of a "Indigo Bunting" with photos from Robert Howard taken today in Ulster County, linked below. A few of my initial observations but looking forward to hearing from those with more experience separating between these taxa. The female passerina bunting in question, has underparts which appear relatively unstreaked and noticeable wingbars made me initially excited at the possibility of this being a Lazuli Bunting. However, the throat does appear to be slightly paler and contrasting, which would lean more toward an Indigo Bunting. Head color is difficult to judge but at least appears concolorous with the flanks. Even if "just" an out-of-season Indigo Bunting is the consensus ID, still a noteworthy bird for the region. Hopefully others can weigh in, and/or the bird can be relocated in the coming days. https://ebird.org/checklist/S100549315 Cheers, Menachem -- NYSbirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsWELCOME.htm http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsRULES.htm http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/nysbirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/NYSBirds-L 3) http://birding.aba.org/maillist/NY01 Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --

They can be viewed from the edge of the main entrance road, between the parking lot and the building. Tomorrow the weather will be better and golfers will be out. I think the bird is likely to be present in the early morning, but I fear that it will inevitably fly out at some point, and with golfers active on the course, it might not return. Thus, it might be prudent for those serious about seeing it to commit to an early arrival, rather than awaiting news of its continuing presence before heading over. [nysbirds-l] King Eider at Caumsett SP (YES)
I just received an update and photos from Bobby Rossetti that indeed a young male King Eider was seen along Long Island Sound at Caumsett State Park between thefisherman’s parking lot and the area just past the pond to the east at low tide earlier today. It is evidently working its way up and down the shoreline. Photos from Bobby are posted to my flickr account with his permission https://www.flickr.com/gp/80885180@N07/2qXH3D. Please note I refrained from reposting original WhatBird King Eider photo which Ethan Maitra referenced due to possible copyright issues. A) I do not know the usability status of images submitted to WhatBird b) I do not even know who the original finder of the eider is and C) I did not know how to contact them in order to get proper permission. It was and likely still is available through the WhatBird site which can be viewed by making a "dummy account". Thank you Shai and Matthew for providing the updates on over-summering and breeding ducks on Long Island and for Bobby for confirming the bird's presence. Re: [nysbirds-l] adult Baird's continues Jones Beach Nassau County
Adult Baird's Sandpiper continues as previously reported in the easternmost pond. At first I re-found it along the phragmites line at the far southwestern edge of the dried pond. It then flew into the grassy area connecting the aforementioned easternmost pond with the next pond to the west. Seen well between 2:00-3:30. When I left, it had returned to where I had originally found it. [nysbirds-l] 2 Baird's Sandpipers @ Sagaponack Pond
Thanks to Karen Rubinstein's directions and a weekend home from school, I finally managed to connect with a Baird's Sandpiper after many many tries. Then, not only was there one Baird's, but both birds continue from yesterday on the remaining flats just northwest of the parking lot. There is very little flats remaining so the birds may not remain for much longer. Other birds of note were 2 Pectoral Sandpipers in the vicinity of the aforementioned Baird's and 72 American Golden Plovers seen circling the sod field on Osborne Ave in Riverhead. They landed west of the sod field behind the apple orchard. No Buff-breasted Sandpipers seen on Osborne Ave nor on the Head of the Neck Rd sod field. I just wanted to add some details to the previous postings about the Stint. Today, when I first saw the bird, it was feeding among the Semipalmated Sandpipers west of the main tern loafing flats, between the two patches of marsh grasses at 10:20. As soon as the crowd had gathered it flew onto the main tern flats where it remained for a few minutes. Finally it flew in the direction of the parking lot where it was lost and never re-found despite many hours of continued searching by many. I hope the bird sticks around for more to see. [nysbirds-l] Red-headed Woodpecker- Hempstead Lake State Park
Thanks to hearing a report from Ed while birding at Jones Beach, I quickly made my way over to Hempstead Lake State Park where I was treated to a nice male Red-headed Woodpecker. It was seen just south of the tennis courts predominately on low tree trunks in the yard of the lone house and also just on the other side of the yard's fence. [nysbirds-l] Common Redpoll: Jones Beach West End
In the median, I was rewarded with great views of 5 Common Redpolls. Also, at Colonial Springs Golf Course where the Barnacle Goose was found yesterday, a guard kicked me out and I was unable to search for the goose. Re: [nysbirds-l] Tufted Duck (YES) ++
I was with Michael this morning and also saw the Tufted Duck. I thought it would be useful to note that it was not seen among the raft of Scaup and there were no Scaup at all in the harbor. [nysbirds-l] Painted Bunting Continues @ Alley Pond
As of 4:30 the Painted Bunting seen was hugging the brush line in left field of the closest baseball diamond to the parking lot. Surprisingly it seemed to be following a Common Yellowthroat.
