Hi Steve,

Whenever, I see “hybrid” in any reports I am always tempted to immediately take
a peep. Despite looking at the images from the field on my phone I have to
respectfully disagree with the “presumed” hybrid call on the bird you
referenced.

This to me, is just a Semipalmated Sandpiper (SESA). I agree it is a tad
heavily marked below but nothing in the structure or bill is suggestive of a
Western hybrid with a SESA.

I certainly claim no expertise; however, my time having Semipalmated Sandpipers
in the hand and field observations, I have learned to appreciate variation in
plumage and size. The plumage on this bird in my opinion is within the range of
just a straight up Semipalmated Sandpiper.

When I have a chance, I will take a look on a bigger screen and perhaps provide
more details.

RE: [nysbirds-l] stores that display a variety of spotting scopes

2016-03-14 Thread Philip Ribolow
B Photo on 9th Ave has many scopes on display. While they are quite
knowledgeable, they are somewhat less than helpful in that the scopes are not
mounted on tripods. If you already have a tripod, I suggest bringing it with
you. If not, you can go upstairs to the used tripod dept and borrow one with a
head and take it downstairs. If they’ll let you, take 2 tripods so you can
mount 2 scopes at the same time and compare them side by side; of course that
means, you’ll have to figure out 2 tripods. The downside is that B is in the
middle of NY and they don’t let you take anything outside without paying for
it, so the furthest away you can focus the scope you’re trying is across 9th
Ave where you can look at a building façade which is only about 150 feet away.
You won’t get a true feel for how the scope will actually perform when outside
in the field. Personally, I went to B and then decided that driving to CMBO
to really give their scopes a true test drive under actual conditions was the
right thing to do, especially since I was spending a significant sum on a scope
that I intend to use for the next 15-20 years, and wanted to be sure I got the
decision right. Added bonus –when you buy from CMBO, you support one of the
most significant birding organizations in the world. Good luck.

Apparently the Cape May Bird Observatory has such a store, but I'd rather not

Subject: [nysbirds-l] Gyrfalcon - NO

Hi all,
At sunrise today Rich Fried and I were on the dock at Cedar Beach Marina with
hopes to see the Gyrfalcon that was found on Wednesday and seen yesterday
morning. After a couple of hours and with 3 other birders also looking for it
we decided to go and check other locations.

When we arrived at Gilgo the fog had rolled in and it was so thick that we
could barely discern the gates and perhaps half of the parking lot. You
couldn't even tell that there was a dock and water beyond. So we turned around
and drove back. Cedar Beach was also socked in fog by then so we continued to
Captree, which was virtually void of birds. Next we stopped at the Coast Guard
Station, where the sand bar was occupied by a large flock of Brant, regular
gulls and a few shorebirds.

At West End II we found a large flock of Snow Buntings (120+) that was moving
between the swale and parking lot.

After another stop at Cedar Beach Marina we made our last stop at Point
Lookout, where we enjoyed watching one male Harlequin Duck, 4 Purple Sandpiper,
a handful of Sanderling and cirka one hundred Dunlin on one of the breakwaters.
Common and Red-throated Loons were on the water, small flocks of Black Scoters
flew west to east, and further out a dozen or so Northern Gannets were feeding.

good birding on an unusually warm December spring-like day,

Thanks again everyone. That TNR bill was vetoed by the Governor.

I note that in his veto message, he cites the conflict with the Agriculture and
Markets (prohibits releasing animals into the wild) and the destructive effect
feral cats have on wildlife. These are two of the important points many of us
have brought to the governor in our messages in opposition.

I am confident that our friends in DEC, Parks and Recreation and Agriculture
and Markets have voiced their agency concerns as well.

All in all, it was a good and worthwhile effort.

Thanks all.

Now let's have those colonies removed.

It would also be good to send a note of appreciation to the governor as well.

A few people e-mailed me for further details on the whereabouts of this bird so
I figured I would send a broadcast message.

When I left, about 30 minutes ago, the Red Phalarope was still showing well. It
sporadically takes flight in response to a number of variables including low
flying aircraft. As seen earlier, when it disappeared for over 20 minutes it
returned eventually to the ponds, just be patient and check all three ponds.
Please do not attempt to go down into the ponds as it may spook everything and
it may very well not return.

For logistics, park in the Teddy Roosevelt Nature Center parking lot and head
west through the dunes towards what appears to be an old blind--look for people
with scopes etc. Additionally, Least Sandpipers, White-rumped Sandpiper,
Short-billed Dowitchers, Semipalmated Sandpipers, Killdeers, Semipalmated
Plovers, Eastern Willet along with both Lesser and Greater Yellowlegs are in
the area.

Happy Phalarope Friday!

kept moving back and forth between the two ponds. However, since this last

I don't know if the swale has any water but I'll check that area and post an

RE: [nysbirds-l] S. 1081 - feral cat issues

2015-06-24 Thread Philip Ribolow
I just put calls through to each of these senators and my own state senator
asking them to vote NO on today’s vote on S-1081. I got through to everyone
easily. The only ones to ask for my address were my own senator and Kemp
Hannon, which is why I’ve included zip codes. I urge everyone to call. This
whole process took less than 5 minutes and apparently, it is a lot easier
calling State Government than the Federal Government.

The bill legitimizing release of domestic cats into the wild and authorizing
public funds to fund feral cat colonies is apparently coming up today in the
NYS Senate. Many wild bird groups and supporters such as American Bird
Conservancy are urging the public to contact their state senators and urge them
to vote "No" on S. 1081. Here are some contacts for those interested in making
such calls. Obviously you can also call your own state senator.

Subject: [nysbirds-l] S. 1081 - feral cat issues

The bill legitimizing release of domestic cats into the wild and authorizing
public funds to fund feral cat colonies is apparently coming up today in the
NYS Senate. Many wild bird groups and supporters such as American Bird
Conservancy are urging the public to contact their state senators and urge them
to vote No on S. 1081. Here are some contacts for those interested in making
such calls. Obviously you can also call your own state senator.

RE: [nysbirds-l] YES Caracara Golf course

2015-04-13 Thread Philip Ribolow
Classification: Public

Last night, 4/12, the Caracara was roosting on the Golf Course access road on
the left side driving towards the gate, just over the tiny bridge (really a 2
foot steel plate). When I left at 8:15PM it was still there.
