[nysbirds-l] Western Sullivan Co.
Did some birding on Saturday along New York's Upper Delaware River Valley and surrounding areas from Barryville to Calicoon in Sullivan County. I struck out on Northern Shrike, but managed a nice raptor show and some redpolls. No real waterfowl to speak of despite the abundant open water. Highlights: Great Horned Owl (1 near Feagles Lake at dawn) Bald Eagle (2 adults hanging around at Roebling Bridge) Rough Legged Hawk (1 light phase adult seen from Route 52 near Narrowsburg) Red-shouldered Hawk (Tusten) Common Raven (1 at Calicoon) Cooper's Hawk (Narrowsburg) Common Redpoll (lock of six flyover near Barryville) Brown-headed Cowbird (Single bird mixed with some Starlings near Skinner's Falls, wondered if this was an uncommon bird given the time of year and location, but it did not exhibit any field marks to suggest it being anything other than just a Brown-headed Cowbird) -Mike Shanley Staten Island, NY -- NYSbirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/nysbirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/NYSBirds-L 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/NYSB.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --

Re: [nysbirds-l] Bell's Vireo - YES
Dick Veit captured what he termed "manky" photos of the bird. Two of them have been posted to the SINaturalist Yahoo group. That being said, I attempted to capture some digibin shots of the bird this evening, but was unsuccessful. -Mike Shanley From: Christopher T. Tessaglia-Hymes To: Rawshanks Sent: Tuesday, September 11, 2012 7:34 PM Subject: Re: [nysbirds-l] Bell's Vireo - YES Out of curiosity, has any effort been made to document the bird via photographs, video footage, or an attempt to record any vocalizations? This is an excellent bird for NYS; any documentation will provide a stronger case for a report submitted to NYSARC. [nysbirds-l] Bell's Vireo Update - NO
As far as I know, the Bell's Vireo previously reported from Mt Loretto Unique Area Staten Island this morning has still not been refound as of 3pm. A few people are still currently looking. If you park at the main lot, walk the main the road about 100 feet and make a left at the brown park log book box. Take that trail out along the field, and stop once the trail makes a 90 degree turn right and starts to head up towards the bluffs. The bird was seen in the large dead tree on the left with creeper growing on it. I live close by and plan to stop by after work today, and again in the morning. -Mike Shanley -- NYSbirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/nysbirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/NYSBirds-L 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/NYSB.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --

[nysbirds-l] Narrowsburg Sullivan Co. NY 10/16
Took today off from working on my vacation house in PA to hop across the Delaware and bird around Narrowsburg a bit. I stopped at Glen Cove cemetery in Narrowsburg town, and then headed a few miles south on Route 97 to ten mile river access trail. I am still acquainting myself with the area, so I just kind wandered around a bit. Highlights: Bald Eagle 5 (4 adults) Cooper's Hawk 3 Sharp-shinned Hawk 1 Black Vulture 3 Turkey Vulture 46 Chipping Sparrow ~100-150 birds easily at Glen Cove cemetery, didn't have time to look through all of them Yellow-rumped Warbler ~20 Common Yellowthroat 1 Baltimore Oriole 1 Glen Cove cemetery Canada Geese 120 Eastern Bluebird 2 Ruby-crowned Kinglet 1 Winter Wren 1 Junco 20 On my way back I stopped at the National Park Service headquarters on the PA side of the river, as this area can be productive, and had an active Pileated Woodpecker nice and close! -Mike Shanley -- NYSbirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/nysbirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/NYSBirds-L 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/NYSB.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --

[nysbirds-l] White Ibis Staten Island Mt. Loretto
Currently being viewed at Mt Loretto Unique Area. From main parking lot, follow trail back, Ibis in field on the right, towards the back of the park. As you approach the large ephemeral pond on the right along the road, look beyond it across the large field. Easily spotted feeding in grasses close to tree line. Found by Jeff Stetson about 5PM, I heard that he had watched it fly in, so might be worth looking for first thing AM. -Mike Shanley -- NYSbirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsRULES ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/nysbirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/NYSB.html 3) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/NYSBirds-L Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --
