RE: [nysbirds-l] Cliff Swallow Nest in the Bronx

2015-07-16 Thread Schlesinger, Lee
For the past few year, there have been Cliff Swallows nesting on various
buildings on the Purchase College (SUNY) campus, where I teach. Though the
grounds-keeping staff periodically take down some of the nests perhaps
mistaking them for wasp nests (I have sent several e-mails complaining to the
appropriate administrators, to no particular effect), the birds are thriving,
rebuilding their nests sometimes and changing locations. Currently there are
many Cliff Swallows in the air especially above "The Mall"--central campus
area; these probably include a first brood. I should add that on a recent
quick walk through the more "natural" areas of campus the other day, I recorded
33 species, including an apparent migrant Acadian Flycatcher, an apparent local
Willow Flycatcher, Brown Thrasher, and a nice array of fairly common nesting
species.

There's also a nest on the Hunter Island Bridge near the Pelham Bay Park
landfill found by Matthieu Benoit June 7, 2015. Jared Cole found a Cliff
Swallow nest on the Hunter Island Bridge a few years ago which was reported by
Richard Aracil.

Brendan Keogh, aka Bronx Brendan, found an active Cliff Swallow nest at
Orchard Beach. I don’t ever remember seeing one in this area. I’m curious to
know if any others have been reported in the NYC area.

[nysbirds-l] Union Square

2014-10-26 Thread Schlesinger, Lee
?An hour or so in Union Square Park in Manhattan this afternoon produced nice
results. Birds were quite active. In addition to the very common
White-Throated Sparrows and the expected Hermit Thrushes and Robins (and other
common species), I noted:

Brown Creeper

Towhee

Catbird

many Ruby-Crowned Kinglets, often at arms-length distance

a couple of Golden-Crowned Kinglets

several Yellow-Bellied Sapsuckers

Common Yellowthroat

Yellow-Rumped Warbler

CAPE MAY WARBLER

FOX SPARROW

[nysbirds-l] swans

2014-04-01 Thread Schlesinger, Lee
Driving north on the West Side Highway this morning (Tuesday April 1), I saw
three adult Swans (very bright and unmodulated white) in the middle of the
Hudson off about 100th Street. Of course I couldn't carefully identify them,
but they suggested Tundra Swans to me, and I hope someone may have a chance to
observe them more carefully...

While at the Farmers Market in Union Square this morning, I saw a COMMON

[nysbirds-l] bryant park

2013-08-05 Thread Schlesinger, Lee
I (Lee Schlesinger) took a quick couple of turns through Bryant Park this
morning--early in the season, but excellent conditions; and indeed I saw a
couple of migrants: an Empidonax flycatcher (pale lemony belly but whitish
upper breast/throat, rather broad pale bill, possibly an Acadian); one warbler,
appeared (seen very high in the sycamores, s.e. corner) to be a Blackpoll
(almost pure white underneath, small black streaks mostly on the sides of the
upper breast--no view of upperparts; posture/behavior "wrong" for
Black-and-White...)...

Took a couple of turns around Bryant Park this morning, saw:

6-8 Common Yellowthroats (maybe more? two "adult"-ish males...)
4 or so Ovenbirds
several small groups of White-Throated Sparrows
a very bedraggled warbler up the Plane Trees, southeast corner, appeared to be

1 Orange-Crowned Warbler, also southeast corner, low/close enough to catch a
