Audubon New York and NYC Audubon’s Executive Directors “sent a letter to the Port Authority Executive Director (Pat Foye) and JFK’s General Manager. We have also alerted Governor Cuomo’s Office (the PA is jointly controlled by NY and NJ) and the DEC as to our position.” Our chapter network’s leaders have been alerted as well. Thx everyone. All I just contacted the number below and was told it is the 'media relations' dept. They only field calls from Media organizations The person there however gave me this alternate contact info; Ian Van Praagh, 212-435-6938 I called and left a message. I just called and the woman who took my comment said that if the governor would take a stand on the issue, it would be reported on the front page of his website:http://www.governor.ny.gov/ I also see his Twitter feed appears there. Perhaps it's worthwhile to also tweet him our concerns (and with higher public visibility): @NYGovCuomo --Jennifer On 12/9/2013 2:18 PM, naturelvr1...@yahoo.com wrote: > Just called they took my zip code and comment and said it would be > passed along. Re: [cayugabirds-l] Fwd: [nysbirds-l] Snowy Owls being shot at JFK
Thanks so much Alicia, I just called Barbara Lifton's office. The woman I spoke with had just read an article this morning (Ithaca Journal?) about these owls and their arrival so was at least informed as to the underlying information. She is going to check out who to contact and get back to me. I did emphasize that we were looking for humane solutions to this "problem" and that other airports seemed to do just fine with trap and release. I also said a Snowy that is trapped and released will not be looking to return to that airport but would be happen in many wide open farm fields and refuges. I will let everyone know what I learn. I feel this can't wait. Yes, I called too and chose option 3, to speak with an assistant. She asked me if there was a bill number, I said no, I'm calling to register extreme displeasure. She took my zip code. I will try some other methods also suggested to me.
I did emphasize that we were looking for humane solutions to this problem and that other airports seemed to do just fine with trap and release. I also said a Snowy that is trapped and released will not be looking to return to that airport but would be happen in many wide open farm fields and refuges. I will let everyone know what I learn. I feel this can't wait. The object is to make noise, lots of noise, not to actually change anyone's idea of what they think would be best ... Also, all comments should emphasize this isn't a birds vs.people issue, that there are ways to fully protect both - again, not to persuade the agency, but just so they can't frame it as crazy birders ignorant of public safety issues. Best - Alicia P.S. People should cc the governor's office AND Assemblywoman Lifton on anything sent to any agencies! P.P.S. Ideally, you also want to send messages to the chairperson of whatever committee supervises the particular agency - again, the Assemblywoman's office can give you that information. - Original Message - From: Linda Orkin wingmagi...@gmail.com To: Betsy Russell betsywruss...@aol.com, nysbirds-l NYSBIRDS-L@cornell.edu Cc: caven...@gmail.com, CAYUGABIRDS-L cayugabird...@list.cornell.edu Sent: Mon, 9 Dec 2013 12:43:00 -0500 Subject: Re: [cayugabirds-l] Fwd: [nysbirds-l] Snowy Owls being shot at JFK Thanks Betsy for this information. Hi, I just called the number for PA Media Relations Office. The woman who answered asked me if I was a member of the media. When I said no, she gave me the info # for the PA, (212-435-7000), but none of the options seem to pertain to our kind of concern. The rep I spoke to at Gov. Cuomo's office told me she has been getting lots of calls and took my zip code along with my complaint. Let’s keep the pressure on!
