Many first of the year migrants have been coming through or arriving at the
Bashakill over the last couple of weeks.   Highlights of these have been
American Bittern,  Common Gallinule, Brown Thrashers (three pairs breeding
already) Pied-billed Grebes (already breeding) Rusty Blackbirds and an
abundance of passerines.   Warblers highlighted the day today with at least 11
species now being seen.   The highlight however was an ORANGE-CROWNED
WARBLER.  Initially spotted by Arlene Borko, we soon relocated the bird whose
identity was unknown.   The bird was quite cooperative, feeding in Barberry
only six feet off the ground and 15 feet from us.  It quickly became clear it
was OCWA.  Olive-green back, gray green underparts faintly streaked.  Dark eye
line and thin bill.   Yellow undertail coverts and no other markings (wing bars
etc) cinched the ID.  This was only my third OCWA in the county.  The bird was
found at approximately 1021
South Road.   It remained in view for over five minutes, but was unable to be
located after that.  With dozens of warblers present at this spot, it may still
be around.  John Haas
