[nysbirds-l] Black-bellied Whistling-Ducks Suffolk Co. Long Island

Jeanne Cimorelli reports finding 4 black-bellied whistling ducks at Avalon
gardens in marshy pond at Rhododendron Dr and Saddle Rd. She shared a drop pin
https://goo.gl/maps/Duazw71ToVmt9AZPA

Please note that this is a neighborhood with only street/on road parking. Be
courteous and mind your behavior if twitching. Jeanne did also share that the
ducks appeared to be quite skittish so stealth approach is best.

Bless up!

Ben Bolduc just sent me photos of 4 Black-bellied Whistling Ducks he found
today (7/15/21) on a cattle pond in Mattituck, NY on the North Fork of Long

Unfortunately, this pond is located on private property and access is
extremely limited if not impossible as the owners do not want visitors.

Arrived at the NE cloverleaf pond at Jones Beach SP about 10 minutes ago.
Couldn’t see any ducks in the pond itself among the heavy vegetation, but
then about five minutes ago 10 Black-bellied Whistling-Ducks picked up,
whistling, and flew east/northeast. Perhaps a couple still in this pond,
likely all still in the area, but who knows?

Re: [nysbirds-l] Black-bellied Whistling Ducks - Cow Meadow - Yes

2019-05-21 Thread Mike McBrien
The Whistling Ducks were still present when I arrived at 8:20 tonight; however,
shortly thereafter, they picked up and flew low over the marinas and
residential area immediately to the west.

For those looking to chase the birds early tomorrow, I think it is still worth
visiting Cow Meadow. After the ducks initially flew off the west, they
returned on two separate occasions over the next several minutes (flying in
from the west, circling low over the pond and adjacent field, and then
returning back west). Given this behavior, I think it is reasonable to think
that they might have subsequently returned in the twilight hours to the Cow
Meadow ponds.

Good luck to those who go,

duckweed covered pond near the end of the entrance road and the
administration building. They spent a fair bit of time foraging at the
northwest end of the pond before climbing onto a small log in the northwest

Very nice birds to get.  I had two with the redhsank in Brooklyn back in the

[nysbirds-l] Black-bellied Whistling Ducks/No sightings

2016-05-31 Thread Sean Sime
I've been in contact with Phil Hore, the person credited with finding the
Black-bellied Whistling Ducks at Marine Park in Brooklyn on 5/28.

When I congratulated him on the find he was quick to point out that while
he did get the word out the birds were originally found and identified by
others. He is not a member of the NYS list-serve, but asked if I could pass
this information along to the broader birding community to give credit
where credit is due. Quite an honorable thing to do, IMHO.

"The flock was found by Charlie Spinnato, a photographer who said he would
be posting photos on Facebook, under Long Island Wildlife Photography. NYC
Park Ranger Brooke Skelly made the identification."

Cheers all around!

[nysbirds-l] Black-bellied Whistling-ducks

2011-07-31 Thread Felipe Pimentel
There are five Black-bellied Whistling-ducks at the Edwin B. Forsythe National
Wildlife Refuge (Oceanville, New Jersey). You can locate the ducks around the
big observation gull tower (they tend to be together). The ducks have been
spotted in the ponds around the tower. In addition to the ducks, there were
many Clapper Rails (we saw at least five) and several Whimbrels. And of course
a lot of shorebirds.

This is a picture of one of the ducks.

[nysbirds-l] Black-bellied Whistling-Ducks still there and Upland Plovers at Blue Chip

2011-05-24 Thread Andrew Block
Was able to see the 5 Black-bellied Whistling-Ducks at Wallkill River NWR's
Liberty Loop Trail at 8am today.  They were actually north of Oil City Rd. in
the second impoundment on the left where all the mallards and pipers are.  Had
nice looks as they flew around and fed.  Observed them til 8:30 and then headed
up to Blue Chip Farm  in Wallkill and got nice looks at 3 Upland Sandpipers.  A
very nice morning.

[nysbirds-l] Black-bellied Whistling-Ducks - Oneida Lake

2010-05-31 Thread Tom Johnson
NYSbirders,
Five Black-bellied Whistling-Ducks were found this morning at the east
end of Oneida Lake in Brewerton. Bill Purcell got the word out
(thanks Bill!), and a number of birders were able to view the ducks
sitting on a dock at these coordinates: 43.236545,-76.134656
The ducks reportedly flew west along the Oneida River in the evening.
Jay McGowan and I viewed the birds until 6:40PM; at 8:25PM, on our way
back south to Ithaca, we checked the dock and surrounding area and did
not see the ducks. All birds are unbanded and have healthy-looking,
intact feet, toes, and nails (bands and clipped toes/ nails can
suggest captive origin). The timing is consistent with natural
vagrancy of the species to the north of its normal range and I think
it is appropriate to consider the birds as wild vagrants.
Interestingly, I found a group of 5 Black-bellied Whistling-Ducks in
Dauphin County, Pennsylvania yesterday morning; those birds turned up
on a golf course pond near my parents' house and flew away at 8:30AM.
This site is roughly 210 miles to the south of Brewerton, NY as
measured on Google Maps. Without wanting to start conspiracy theories
about vagrants showing up at multiple locations, I think this is a
decent possibility in this case. I've tried to find individual
markings on the ducks in my photos that could be used to link the two
sightings with more confidence but haven't been successful yet. If
others have ideas on the matter, I'd be interested in learning more.
More information can be found on OneidaBirds:
http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/ONEI.html
My photos of the whistling-ducks in NY and PA are here:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/bonxie88/

Also in the realm of southern rarities turning up in Upstate NY - a
Yellow-throated Warbler found by Chris Wood and Jessie Barry spent
today singing in a Tompkins County yard, and a dead Prothonotary
Warbler was found on an Ithaca street yesterday evening. Perhaps
there are more southern birds hiding out there...

Cheers,
Tom
