[nysbirds-l] Brooklyn Iceland Gulls
Late yesterday I went to Bush Terminal Park hoping to locate Brooklyn's reported Iceland Gull. I ran into a CP birder named Tina who was doing the same. After a long, unsuccessful stake out of the usual roosts along the jetties, I shifted my focus to a cloud of gull activity just outside the park along 1st Ave. Several big rigs loaded with a "fragrant" cargo was attracting the birds. A quick scan located an Iceland among the mostly ring-billed & herrings. Leaving the park to get a better look, Tina and I walked down to a recently parked truck that had a bunch of gulls landing on it. After only a minute or two the Iceland came it. It hung around the area for a while and was still perched on the roof of a building opposite the park entrance when I left. It wasn't until today that I looked at the photo from the original reporter that I realized that there are two Iceland Gulls. His was a second cycle and yesterday's was an adult. Cool. [nysbirds-l] Brooklyn Iceland Gull
There was an immature Iceland Gull in Prospect Park today. I spotted it at around noon as it milled about on the mostly frozen Prospect Lake with the numerous Herrings, Ring-billed and a few Great Black-backed Gulls. A pleasant surprise as it was a park first for me in my 20+ years of birding Prospect. [nysbirds-l] Brooklyn Iceland Gull
Today Heydi Lopes, Keir Randall and I birded Coney Island Beach and Coney Island Creek. While scanning Gravesend Bay from Coney Island Creek Park, Keir spotted what appeared to be a white-winged gull about 1/4 mile to the West. We walked down the beach to get closer looks and confirmed the ID as a 2nd year Iceland Gull. The gull was spending a lot of time in the water near green buoy #1, fairly close to shore, at these coordinates: 40°34'58.74"N 74° 0'19.95"W It was observed between 1:20pm and 2:37pm moving from the above location, Northeast, towards the end of Calvert Vaux Park and back. If you go by car there is parking along Bayview Avenue near West 37th Street.
