Where they were able to get some nice looks. Bird was seen in same spot. Path
on right walking towards Little Alley Pond from Springfield Blvd parking lot.

This morning around 8AM there was a female Golden-winged Warbler with a small
group of warblers at "Little Alley". There were also 2 Nashville Warblers that
occasionally wagged their tails, but probably not enough for the western race.
Ponds were dry and the vegetation was dense almost everywhere, making
visibility poor. But my dog list increased exponentially

Congrats to Eric Miller for the great find (made, I might add, because he was
out walking his dog).

Also, a stop at the rapidly dwindling waterhole in Forest Park afterwards was
rather unrewarding. If we don't get the predicted rain a stop there will likely
become even less rewarding. Hope for rain (just not on the weekends)!

RE: [nysbirds-l] Golden-winged Warbler @ Crocheron Park Queens County...

2012-04-30 Thread Steve Walter
Relocated periodically through 6:15, though possibly remaining hidden in the
same tree much of the time. The actual spot is not all that close to the
gazebos. Some more specific directions: Park by the western end of the pond.
There is a walkway with shallow steps that goes up the hill. At the end of
the stairway, there is a grass triangle between the paths. There are two
benches at this triangle. In the triangle, there is a very wide trunked oak
with several branches branching out at about 12 feet high. Eric wants me to
add that there is a "cleft" in the trunk (no doubt, that helps). This is the
tree in which the Golden-winged was being seen. Viewing for the most part
was being done from deep, straight away center field of the ball field.

[nysbirds-l] Golden-winged Warbler in Central Park, NYC

2009-09-23 Thread Joseph DiCostanzo
While leading my American Museum of Natural History group in the Ramble in
Central Park this morning we found a Golden-winged Warbler along the stream
by the rustic bridge at the south end of the Azalea Pond. We did not get
great looks at the time and could not confirm the identification, but I
passed word of the bird to Starr Saphir who was leading her group in the
Ramble at the time. Since getting to my office, Starr called me to say that
her group had refound the bird (I believe along the stream between the
Azalea Pond and the Evodia Field) and that it is definitely a Golden-winged
Warbler.

Otherwise, Central Park was relatively quiet. Other birds found included:

Ruby-throated Hummingbird (4, two by Hernshead, two by Upper Lobe)

Eastern Wood Pewee

Swainson's Thrush

Wood Thrush

Black-throated Blue Warbler

Black-and-white Warbler

American Redstart

Common Yellowthroat

Joe DiCostanzo

(My apologies if this message has gone out twice, but my email program is
misbehaving this morning.)

I have heard Golden winged Warblers are abundant at Sterling Forest in Southern
New York, and was wondering exactly where the Golden winged warblers are at
Sterling Forest. Thanks.
