[nysbirds-l] Iceland Gull- Point Lookout, Nassau County 3/15/24

2024-03-16 Thread kevin rogers
Hi All,
Had an interesting gull fly onto the jetty adjacent to the western most part of
the parking lot at Point Lookout yesterday around 6pm. Sent some pics for
review (Thank you so much Shai!!) and the bird indeed is an Iceland Gull.
Wanted to put up a post here in case anyone is down that way and wants to put
it on their radar as perhaps it continues.
Kind Regards-Kev

at Bush Terminal Piers Park.

While looking for the Iceland Gull I found a drake EURASIAN WIGEON. Which was
in the company of a hen and drake American Wigeon. The other highlight from
there was a Raven, a bird that I am seeing with some regularity in that
location.

In further evidence that Spring has Sprung, I observed multiple Cabbage Whites
feeding and fluttering about the vegetation plus several migrating Red Admirals.

2016-11-20 Thread Matthieu BENOIT
Richard Aracil and I got an Iceland gull from Twin islands in Pelham bay park this afternoon, it is now perched on the rocks in front of High island. And a Goshawk just flew next to us on Twin island 5 min ago, likely still in the area. Pictures of both birds will be posted on ebird. Matthieu Sent from my T-Mobile 4G LTE device

[nysbirds-l] Iceland Gull+, Central Park, NYC 2/23

2016-02-23 Thread Thomas Fiore

Tuesday, 23 February, 2016 -

An Iceland Gull was present on the reservoir in Central Park
(Manhattan, NY. City) at ~ 8 a.m., as well as a breeding-plumaged
drake Red-breasted Merganser, both photo'd.; also seen again, smaller
goose with duskier breast, presumably the same one of much recent
discussion, with about 300+ additional (Canada) geese. At the bridle
path near the reservoir, a flock of 15 Cedar Waxwings appeared just
briefly in a small cluster of sumac trees.

[nysbirds-l] Iceland Gull returns, Central Park NYC 2/18

2016-02-18 Thread Thomas Fiore

Thursday [p.m.], 18 February, 2016

Iceland Gull has come in again at the reservoir in Central Park
(Manhattan) where it was closer to the n. end pumping station area,
mid-afternoon; also the Red-breasted Merganser is still there, and
that modest-size goose, presumed a Cackler, if not a hybrid Canada-
Cackling also lingering with the large goose-group. A Turkey Vulture
flew over the park, headed more or less east a bit earlier as well.

[nysbirds-l] Iceland Gull a.m, Central Park NYC 2/16

2016-02-16 Thread Thomas Fiore

Tuesday, 16 February, 2016 -

Central Park, Manhattan, N.Y. City

An Iceland Gull was again seen on the reservoir in Central Park, this
morning from 7-8 a.m. - on arrival there around sunrise I immediately
saw that large numbers of gulls were present & some more were
arriving, with still 60% or more of the surface holding skim-ice, &
many gulls as well as geese & other birds sitting out on & also near
the ice, as well as in the water. The Iceland (presumed-apparent
Kumlein's form) Gull was in the SE quadrant of the reservoir, &
allowed me half-decent photos with a point-&-shoot, including at least
1 low-flight photo, and was roughly 100 yards west of the east bank of
the res., not far north of the SE pumping station building - it was
lost to view after about 8 a.m. when I'd started to do some scanning &
counting of the many other birds.

More than 1,000 gulls were present after 8 a.m., with at least 700+
already present on my arrival at the reservoir a bit before sunrise.
With the (rapidly!) changeable weather now, it's hard to predict what
the gull situation will be thru this day, much less the rest of the
week, but in general, by later (p.m.) most days the gulls at the CP
reservoir tend to move out and roost elsewhere (and usually not in the
park, but last night may have been an exception.)

As for a smaller similar-to Canada-type goose, one was again present
this morning on the reservoir along with 330+ more-standard sized
'typical-here' Canada Geese. The smaller (& smaller-billed) goose was
in the n. portion of the reservoir before 7 a.m., but in a position,
with many other (larger) geese all around, that made it almost useless
to photo., at least with a point-&-shoot camera. Presuming the same
small goose there under discussion on this list, it has been present
on the reservoir for at least 4 days, perhaps more as the numbers of
Canada geese have been somewhat constant in the 300-400 range, for a
bit longer time.

Additional scanning this a.m. did not turn up any more-uncommon
species; a list of what I was able to find is below.

Central Park reservoir, early a.m. -

Double-crested Cormorant (1)
Canada Goose (330+), and 1 smaller goose, presumed the individual with
smaller bill that has been present recently.

American Black Duck (4)
Mallard (200+)
Gadwall (2)
Northern Shoveler (136, actual count)
Ring-necked Duck (male; in the SE quadrant, sleeping; photo.)
Bufflehead (12)
Hooded Merganser (8)
Ruddy Duck (47; fun to watch some in flight as the moved around the
reservoir a bit)

Pied-billed Grebe (1)
American Coot (5)
Iceland Gull (1, SE quadrant, photos.)
Ring-billed Gull (650+++ with more gulls, & esp. Ring-billed, still
arriving after 8 a.m.)

Herring Gull (150+)
Great Black-backed Gull (75+)

Various other birds elsewhere in Central Park, a.m. -

Great Blue Heron, Wood Duck (male), Cooper's Hawk, Red-tailed Hawk,
American Kestrel, Yellow-bellied Sapsucker, Brown Creeper, Golden-
crowned Kinglet, Ruby-crowned Kinglet (several), Hermit Thrush,
American Robin (80+), Gray Catbird (3 locations), N. Mockingbird,
Brown Thrasher (ongoing in at least 2 locations), Eastern Towhee
(several), [Red] Fox Sparrow (modest numbers), Dark-eyed Junco (few),
Red-winged Blackbird, Common Grackle, Brown-headed Cowbird, and
various other common resident or 'wintering-of-late' species.

good it's-zero-&-then-it's-55-degrees birding,

[nysbirds-l] Iceland Gull, Central Park NYC 2/15

2016-02-15 Thread Thomas Fiore

Monday (President's day), 15 February, 2016 -

On the Central Park reservoir (in Manhattan, N.Y. City) at ~ 2 p.m., I
spotted an Iceland Gull in roughly the center-most portion of the 80%
iced-over reservoir; from the western side of the reservoir, standing
very approx. near what would be W. 89 St., the gull was in good view,
sitting on ice but just to the east of a wide & very long stretch of
open water that runs approx. north-south. The conditions are not
great, the gulls are (were) moving a bit, & there were perhaps 500+
gulls scattered around but esp. in the central area & on a n.-s. axis.

I may or may not get back with camera, & even then, photo-ops won't be
very good, as the gull's position was too far from any one place to
watch from. In the 15+ minutes I watched, it was however unobstructed
by any other birds. Also present was the smaller Canada Goose, which
may be a Lesser (form), but not a cackling; the geese were mostly
gathered closer to the north side pumping station bldg. A female
Common Merganser is still present, & there were still a good many N.
Shovelers, but reduced no's. of most of the other waterfowl & such
which are rather regular in winter there.

[nysbirds-l] Iceland Gull at Jones Beach

2015-01-19 Thread Steve Walter
Another interesting adult Iceland Gull was in the Jones Beach West End 2
parking lot during the mid-day today. Characteristics included a rather
large, angular head, pale but not yellow eye, and blackish wing tips. To my
eye, the overall size appeared a tad larger than the closest Herring Gull.
It could be the same individual that has appeared there intermittently in
past years, although it didn't match up perfectly with pictures I took last
year. The streaking on the head was a bit darker than last year's (not sure
if that can vary across different molts) and the wing tips appeared more
dark gray than black in flight. The pattern in the wings is subtly
different, but then I'm also seeing differences between the left and right
wing of today's bird. Leg color was what I'll call a lavender pink (same as
last year's) -- not as bright as I've seen on others. Since I've done
Iceland Gull pictorials in the past, I'm not ready to post this one at this
time. I might still, if there's interest.

[nysbirds-l] Iceland Gull Montauk

2014-10-28 Thread JGIUNTA746
Date: Oct. 28, 2014

My wife Betsy and I saw very well an Iceland Gull in the dredging area of
Montauk Harbor. Other birds of interest were Horned Grebe, five
Bonaparte's Gulls, Belted Kingfisher and many Common Loons all seen from Rod's
Valley
in Montauk.
Juncos everywhere.

Good Birding,

[nysbirds-l] Iceland Gull in Central Park Reservoir

2014-03-18 Thread Mira Furgoch
March 17th, ~4:15pm

The Iceland Gull was seen, by scope, standing on the ice in the center of
the reservoir amongst Ring-billed and Herring Gulls. It was similar in size
to the Herring Gulls, with a mantle more pale than those of the surrounding
gulls, white wing tips, at a distance the bill looked completely black. I
am not a gull expert but this gave me the impression of 1st winter bird.
Unfortunately I do not have any photos.

Also seen in the reservoir were the previously reported Red-necked Grebe
and male Ring-necked Duck in the SE corner of the reservoir. I did not see
the American Wigeon. Full list is on ebird.

Cheers,
Mira Furgoch

I should have thought of this before. Van Cortlandt Park has of one the few
(maybe only) remaining populations of Silvery Checkerspot (butterfly) in the
region. It has disappeared from Connecticut and New Jersey. I knew of a few
populations in Westchester, but I believe these are gone. Even when the
checkerspots were there, the Van Cortlandt population was larger and more
significant. I don't know the status in the rest of New York and whether a
state agency (DEC, Natural Heritage Program) could get involved here. Needs
to be looked into.

The Silvery Checkerspot lives in open areas in woodlands. It lays its eggs
on Woodland Sunflower, the only plant on which the larva can feed and grow.
Paving in the Van Cortlandt woodlands has to be viewed as a major threat to
the species surviving in our area.

Yesterday our walk at Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx yielded the following
highlights: EASTERN BLUEBIRDS, 2 seen just before the trail off the Parade
Grounds that leads to the foot bridge along the golf course. In this same
area, we had an unexpected FIELD SPARROW, which unfortunately took off
rather quickly due to foot traffic; the bird was last seen heading up into
Vault Hill accompanied by an American Tree Sparrow.

At the foot bridge near the golf course, we had 4 RUSTY BLACKBIRDS and this
area remains reliable to see them. Also 4 REDWING BLACKBIRDS also put in an
appearance, the most we have seen this winter in that area. WINTER WRENS, 2
reluctant birds, one near the foot bridge and another on the inner path
along the Putnam Trail. HORNED LARKS 9, on the Parade Grounds. KILLDEERS
2, on the Parade Grounds as well.

Later on at Orchard Beach Pelham Bay Park , Andria and I had 2 flocks of
COMMON GOLDENEYES 47 and 9 respectively; both rafts seen off of Twin Island
as well as 23 PURPLE SANDPIPERS flying around as the tide came in. These
were also viewed off of Twin Island looking out towards Execution Rocks
Lighthouse.

Finally, walking along the Putnam Trail yesterday at Van Cortlandt Park, was
a very poignant moment for me as I thought of the trees and habitat loss
that will take place if and when the Putnam Trail, is paved over with
asphalt. Areas along the path that I learned about and became familiar
with, that hosted nesting Blue Gray Gnatcatchers, Rose-breasted Grosbeaks,
Red-bellied Woodpeckers, Yellow Warblers, Orchard Orioles and Baltimore
Orioles to name a few will all be lost. We are indeed a SELFISH species!!

[nysbirds-l] Iceland Gull, scoters Shinnecock Inlet and west (Suffolk)

2013-02-14 Thread Douglas Futuyma
>From 8:00 to about 10:00 this morning, I examined large concentrations of
gulls that were actively feeding at the ocean's edge, from Shinnecock Inlet
to Tiana Beach. (The most conspicuous food was lady crabs, genus Libinia,
according to a knowledgeable colleague's interpretation of my
description.) A first-winter Iceland Gull was in a large group just west
of Shinnecock Inlet. Among hundreds of gulls in a group about halfway
between the Inlet and Ponquogue Bridge, I discerned only the four common
species, but it may reward further scrutiny if it persists.

Although scoters have been very few at Montauk Point, there was a very
large raft, of at least 7000, directly off the Inlet. They were too backlit
to permit examination for less common species, although this might be
possible, despite their considerable distance, in afternoon. A steady
stream of small parties, coming from the west, joined the raft while I
watched. Small, closer groups included all three scoter species.

My only notable observation along Dune Road was one American Bittern, fully
exposed in storm-flattened marsh, some distance west of Ponquogue Bridge.

A depressing drive through the EpCal property and a pleasant one along
Hulse Landing Road yielded a Northern Harrier, a Merlin, and about 15
Horned Larks.

[nysbirds-l] Iceland Gull & etc., NYC 2/13

2013-02-13 Thread Thomas Fiore
Wednesday, 13 February, 2013

At Central Park, in Manhattan (N.Y. City) an Iceland Gull was again at the
Lake, and after taking bread from passersby (tourists, not birders, at about 1
p.m.), the smutty / winter plumage gull moved out to the still-iced-over
portion, nearer to W. 77 Street. A number of other birds seen in the vicinity
(within half-a-mile) in Central at mid-day included American Woodcock (1),
Rusty Blackbirds (2), Red-winged Blackbird, Brown Thrasher (an overwinterer),
Hermit Thrushes (at least 3 different individuals, all wintering), Swamp &
(several) "red" Fox Sparrows, plus a wide variety of other expected and typical
species for Feb. - with a very good count of Black-capped Chickadee and Tufted
Titmouse, as has been all thru the fall & winter seasons.

[nysbirds-l] Iceland Gull etc., NYC 2/13

2013-02-13 Thread Thomas Fiore
Wednesday, 13 February, 2013

At Central Park, in Manhattan (N.Y. City) an Iceland Gull was again at the
Lake, and after taking bread from passersby (tourists, not birders, at about 1
p.m.), the smutty / winter plumage gull moved out to the still-iced-over
portion, nearer to W. 77 Street. A number of other birds seen in the vicinity
(within half-a-mile) in Central at mid-day included American Woodcock (1),
Rusty Blackbirds (2), Red-winged Blackbird, Brown Thrasher (an overwinterer),
Hermit Thrushes (at least 3 different individuals, all wintering), Swamp
(several) red Fox Sparrows, plus a wide variety of other expected and typical
species for Feb. - with a very good count of Black-capped Chickadee and Tufted
Titmouse, as has been all thru the fall winter seasons.

[nysbirds-l] Iceland Gull etc. in NY Harbor

2013-01-28 Thread gabriel willow
I led a seabirds and seals tour around NY Harbor for NYC Audubon yesterday
afternoon (1/27).
It was a relatively balmy and calm day, and low tide, which allowed for
excellent views of sunning seals on the rocks of Swinburne Island.
Bird highlights included large rafts of Greater Scaup, several Buffleheads and
Common Goldeneye, a couple of Red-throated and Common Loons, Northern Gannets
diving in the distance, and a first-winter Iceland Gull hanging out with the
Herring and Ring-billed Gulls on Swinburne.  There were also one or two Great
Cormorants, many fewer than the 20+ we had on last week's cruise.  Where do
they go?
Cheers,
Gabriel WillowNYC Audubon

A relatively impressive gull roost has been forming on Stump Pond at
Blydenburgh County Park in Smithtown since it iced over last week.  Today it
included a 3rd winter ICELAND GULL.  The ice is quickly retreating toward the
north end of the pond, putting the bulk of roosting birds farter from the
vantage point at the boat rental docks.

[nysbirds-l] Iceland Gull, etc,. Manhattan, NYC 12/22

2012-12-22 Thread Thomas Fiore
Saturday, 22 December, 2012 - Manhattan, N.Y. City

At Central Park's reservoir, an Iceland Gull continues, seen very nicely on the
dike not far off the dike's north end, among many ofv the 3 regular gull
species (primarily Ring-billed, some Herring & Great Black-backed), and
observed from a point on the running path about 50 feet west of the N. building
at the reservoir - at the time of observing, I enjoyed full and very good views
of this gull. (NB, some, or indeed all, of the gulls that come to the
reservoir on a near-daily basis do NOT usually stay there overnight, and
seeking gulls at the CP reservoir may be more productive in mid-day hours. In
any case gulls regularly come & go there & the maximum numbers of gulls seems
often to be after 9, or later, in the morning and may also be before late
afternoon... this varies somewhat day-to-day, & of course seasonally.) This
individual is quite obvious if seen well, but certainly could also be hunkered
in close with the many other gulls and thus require more time to find. I did
not seek, and did not notice, an American Wigeon reported at the reservoir on
Friday but it could easily have been present again - many ducks & some Canada
Geese were loafing near the SW corner of the reservoir in the noon hour.

At Carl Shurz Park, off East End Ave. and between 84th and 92 Streets (I
checked mainly in the portions between 86th and 90th), I did not see any
hunmingbird, but did run into a local birder who mentioned a few of the recent
sightings (a presumed Selasphorus, by those who saw & reported that). In the
90 minutes of poking around that park, I did see a Hermit Thrush, and 3
Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers having quite the little territorial dispute for
"drilling rights" in various trees. Otherwise, the park seemed a little quiet
in overall bird activity. A quick look up the East River and area waters
revealed a modest flock of Atlantic Brant, along with a very few other
waterfowl, gulls of the regular 3 spp. and a few Double-crested Cormorants. A
female Peregrine was atop the western tower of the RFK (mostly still called
Triborough) bridge off W. 125 St. One additional note on Carl Shurz Park &
potentially wintering hummingbirds there - barely any flowers of use to a
hummer seem to be left, yet there just might be a roof or patio garden
somewhere in the neighborhood and it is certainly possible that such a bird is
still nearby, & could still visit an area or areas it may have frequented in
the past weeks or more.

Good birding,

Tom Fiore,
Manhattan

[nysbirds-l] Iceland Gull/ Red-Necked Grebes Coney Island

2011-12-30 Thread Shane Blodgett
There was an adult ICELAND GULL and 2 RED-NECKED GREBES feeding off shore of
the Coney Island boardwalk at 37th street. This is the western end of the
boardwalk.

This is the first adult Iceland I have ever seen in Brooklyn. It was feeding
amongst ~750 Ring-billed and Herring Gulls and exhibiting kleptoparasitic
behavior.

Happy New Year,
Shane Blodgett

[nysbirds-l] Iceland Gull and Common Eider

2011-02-04 Thread redknot
While waiting earlier today for my son 's ferry to pull into port at Orient
Point I casually birded around the ferry slip area. The regularly reported
Iceland Gull was exceptionally accommodating landing within 20 feet of me. It's
right leg and foot are damaged as it limped badly, although I could not see any
type of trauma. On the beach immediately west of the slip, a drake common
eider frequented the shallow water close to shore. I was surprised how close it
came to the shore, allowing me to see, naked eye, the distinctive and pretty
green patch on the back and side of the neck. It then drifted further out in
the water, mixing with a small flock of red-breasted mergansers.

[nysbirds-l] Iceland Gull/Fort Tilden/Queens

2011-01-26 Thread Shane Blodgett
Did some birding in the snow this morning. Only real highlight were an immature
Red-shouldered Hawk near the fisherman's lot at Fort Tilden and a 1st year
ICELAND GULL on the beach on the far east side of Tilden. Bad digi-binned shots
of gull are here:
http://tinyurl.com/66g5fo8

Also the Aviator Sports Field at Floyd held 125 Horned Larks and 11 Snow
Buntings. Didn't find any Laplands.
The larks were clawing through the 2-4 inches of snow to get to the bare
ground so you could just see their backs as they each stood in the depression
they had created. The Snow Buntings were more interested in feeding off the few
weed stalks that were still sticking out of the snow.
Veteran's Memorial Pier and Owl's Head WWTP in Bay Ridge held 500+ Ring-billed
and 44 Bonaparte's Gulls but no Black-headed.
Otherwise Jamaica Bay and the Atlantic were relatively bird less, though
visibility was limited due to fog and snow.
See you afield,Shane B.Brooklyn NY
