[nysbirds-l] Lido Beach Passive Nature Area
Thanks to help from Pat Aiken I was able to see the stilt in the far left pool seen from the berm on the Lookout Trail. Also seen were a couple of yellowlegs, a large flock of sandpipers flying in the distance, an oystercatcher, 2 Black-bellied Plovers, a male Indigo Bunting, and a Blue-headed and Warbling Vireo. [nysbirds-l] Lido Beach
The Prothonotary and Orange-crowned Warblers continue. Both move around a bit, so requires patience. Both are very bright adults, the Prothonotary especially so. Seen till 11:00 when I left. [nysbirds-l] Lido Beach
Lido Beach Passive Nature Area, 12 July High tide. Other than breeding WILLETS, few shorebirds; namely 3 SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHERS, 2 GREATER YELLOWLEGS and several SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPERS. There was a continuous, sporadic movement of COMMON TERNS flying between the channel and the Nickerson Beach colony to the south. One tern, in opposition, flying west instead of north/south, turned out to be a GULL-BILLED TERN. A WILLOW FLYCATCHER called continuously as I approached the trail to the channel, but was silent on my return. There were BOAT-TAILED GRACKLES feeding in the marsh. The planted grass land in front of the parking lot has extensive wild flowers in bloom. Stopped to take some pictures while serenaded by the usual breeding birds. [nysbirds-l] Lido Beach Marine Conservation Area-Tricoloured heron
Hi all, Made an attempt at terns yesterday afternoon at Nicerkson beach, just saw Common Terns and 1 or 2 least terns. At Lido Beach Marine Conservation Area I saw Forster's terns and the only other thing of note was a Tricoloured Heron in the marshes. From: John Askildsen To: nysbirds-l@cornell.edu Sent: Sunday, June 16, 2013 4:14 PM Subject: [nysbirds-l] purple martin in downstate mainland NY as far as I know, the only purple martin colonies in lower mainlaind NYS are in Rye, Westchester County, on the immediate soundshore and one colony in Ulster County alongside the NYS Thruway. so to hear of a thriving colony in putnam county is quite newsworthy, IMO. Perhaps tom burke, rich guthrie or others, can chime in on this. [nysbirds-l] Lido Beach Passive Nature Area
Lido Beach Passive Nature Area 19 Dec. This bay side salt marsh to the west of the Pt. Lookout marinas now shows little damage from the effects of "Sandy" except for 4 medium sized downed trees at the beginning of the trail leading to the bay. These trees were a favorite perch for Boat-tailed Grackles in spring and summer. Where the marsh previously was an almost solid expanse of marsh grass, there is now a significant increase in the number of pools of water scoured out by the hurricane. This looks positive for shore birding this coming spring. One of the 2 Bay houses on the west side of Meadow Island, directly across the bay from the preserve, is gone, the other has damage. Several houses on Cinder Island, the island to the west of Meadow, also appear to be gone, but without a scope, I couldn't assess the damage Because of the high winds, there was little in the way of birds except for a friendly Black-capped Chickadee. Out in the marsh were Mallards, Black Ducks and a single SNOW GOOSE. A wind buffeted COOPER'S HAWK flew over. Following the sign to the Rest Rooms from the parking lot, you go by the maintenance yard which has a significant pile of clam shells. The pile was covered with gulls this morning, but nothing beyond Herring Gulls and a single Great Black-backed Gull. Worth a look. . -- NYSbirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/nysbirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/NYSBirds-L 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/NYSB.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --
