[nysbirds-l] Longspur still on Randall's Island, NYC

2016-02-01 Thread Thomas Fiore

Monday, 1 February, 2016 -

The Lapland Longspur found yesterday (1/31, by Paul Bourdin) at the
east end of Randall's Island (east of Manhattan & N.Y. City's East
River) was seen again this morning by 2 observers - thanks to Tom
Perlman for the update... the longspur was also seen later Sunday in
the same location as reported for that morning, & was still in the
same location this Mon. morning: roughly between ballfields 28 & 31,
along the outer / waterside edge of the Sunken Meadow Fields loop
drive. It may be shy or skittish, going to rocks on the water's edge,
but also comes back to the grassy edge.

good February birding,

Tom Fiore
Manhattan

Re: [nysbirds-l] Longspur

2014-12-10 Thread Andrew Baksh
After reading Sy Schiff's report and then consulting with a few birders who
were with me on Sunday at Jones Beach. I thought that I would add some
information that is sure to add to the intrigue of Lapland sp. at Jones
Beach LI.

On Sunday, a few of us, Gail Benson, Tom Burke, Douglas Futyuma, Steve
Schellenger and I spent sometime scanning a mixed flock of Horned Larks,
Snow Buntings and Longspurs that were feeding sporadically near the
entrance to the swale at West End II, Jones Beach.

We had heard reports of at least 2 Lapland Longspurs in the mixed flock but
after several passes and comparing notes, found that we had *7 Longspurs*
in the flock. Of the seven, *6 were definitely Lapland Longspur* but there
was one bland, heftier looking bird that apparently only Tom Burke and I
laid eyes on; though, neither of us got enough time to study it at length.

Eventually, after the flock disappeared into the dunes we relocated to look
for a Common Ground-Dove. But then Tom Burke and I began discussing the
bland Longspur, comparing what we saw and we decided that we ought to try
harder for a better look at the odd Longspur. Unfortunately, despite
several hours, we were never able to connect with the entire flock and our
second tour only resulted in a maximum of 5 *Lapland Longspurs*. 2
Longspurs were missing, including the odd Longspur that we were hoping to
study.

All of this to say that anyone out at Jones Beach should carefully study
any Longspur. Given the bland, hefty look of this bird, perhaps McCown's
should be given more of a thought than Chestnut-collared but who knows it
all could just be a mild case of "raritis."

Cheers,

[nysbirds-l] Longspur

2014-12-09 Thread syschiff
A lovely day to catch up on my research. Last Sunday, when I left the
Ground-Dove feeding on the west portion of the lot, I found a large group of
Horned Larks on the east side. Scanning through, I found a first year LONGSPUR.
I originally picked it out by shape. Usually one looks for a darker bird.
Studying it, the bird appeared to look bland. It bothered me then, but they all
flew off before I could get a picture.

I spent some time studying up on Longspurs this morning. I kept thinking about
the prior Chestnut-collared Longspur, and now I'm not absolutely positive it
was a Lapland, although it may very well be one.

I think that any Longspurs at Jones Beach should be looked over very carefully.

[nysbirds-l] Longspur - Yes: "I'll get by with a little help from my friends"

2014-02-12 Thread robert adamo
Yesterday (2/12) afternoon at 1300, I finally had the time to sit down and
really try to learn how to operate both of my new toys (a smart phone and a
camera)...unfortunately, I started with the phone !

At ~ 1340, John Sep called to let me know he was looking at the Lapland
Longspur, which had been re-found by Jim Clinton Jr. on Tuesday, at the
Buffalo Farm, Riverhead. Racing out of the house, I was up there in 10
minutes, and by 1405 was feasting on my FOS Lapland !

I then had a decision to make re: going back home (as planned) to continue
learning about my toys, or to continue birding on this seemingly lucky
day...after all, I hadn't caught up with the Pink-footed Goose yet !
Tomorrow's forecast of snow proved to be the deciding factor, and as
I headed n/on Roanoke Ave, within a 100 yards I had positive affirmation on
my choice to keep birding !
In the first farm field n/o Reeve's Ave, was an adult Peregrine Falcon
feeding on the ground. As I got out of the car to scope this scene (in the
hope of identifying the fairly large prey) I noticed a Merlin land in a
nearby tree and join me in watching the ongoing feast. Although I missed
what happened next, as I took the scope out of the trunk and turned toward
the Peregrine, I found the falcon flying away, with his spot having been
taken over by a female N. Harrier. As I tried to ID the prey, the Harrier
took off with it's newly acquired meal, landing .on the far side of the
field, the prey now out of ID range.

Heading east as far as Jamesport, I had the following raptors:

1) 1 Male N. Harrier - Riverhead.

2) 3 Turkey Vultures - Jamesport.

3) I Red-tailed Hawk - Jamesport

Returning to Riverhead:

4) 1 Merlin - Riverhead (different bird}

5) 14 T.V's. - Riverhead

Cheers,
Bob

[nysbirds-l] Longspur no - Goshawk yes !

2014-02-09 Thread robert adamo
I spent the first 3 hours of this afternoon in pursuit of my current
nemeses, the Lapland Longspur. Although remaining "longspur-less" at day's
end, I did have a rewarding outing. While traveling west as far as Hulse
Landing Rd., Wading River, and then east, ending up at Mattituck Inlet,
raptors were the story !

1) 2 male Harriers - 1 Gray Ghost in Riverhead, heading west, the other in
Jamesport, heading east - same day sightings of this gender have been rare
for me.
2) 2 Turkey Vultures circling near the North Fork Preserve, Jamesport.
3) 2 Sharp-shinned Hawks, both in Riverhead.
4) 1 immature N. Goshawk, opposite the Van de Wetering Greenhouses, Sound
Ave, Jamesport.
5) 3 Red-tailed Hawks - 1 Aquebogue, 2 Jamesport, with 1 being at the North
Fork Preserve.
6) 1 Kestrel - at N.F.P.

Cheers,
Bob
