[nysbirds-l] Red Phalarope - NOT Seen Again; Hamlin Beach Highlights
Thanks to Andy Guthrie for posting the Red Phalarope this morning. Around 7:45 a.m., Betsy and I were driving east on the Lake Ontario Parkway and had a shorebird going in the same direction. We pulled over to look but only got the tail as it continued east. We pulled over again but too soon and we never got the head and bill. Finally, the third time we pulled over, I noticed that the bill was too short for a Dunlin, which I had assumed this bird would be, and Betsy noticed a dark facial patch. Now, of course, we were thinking Phalarope. We got back in the car to follow the bird but shortly it veered and headed low behind some trees where there was a large pond. Most of the pond was obscured by thick trees but we found an opening toward the east end, which allowed a view of a small piece of the pond. On that small piece was a RED PHALAROPE! Our lucky day! Unfortunately, the bird was not found shortly afterward by Andy, nor by us when we looked again shortly after noon. After the phalarope, we headed to Hamlin Beach, where we had three groups of BRANT totalling 16 birds, each group flying right along the shoreline. The other highlights were a PARASITIC JAEGER, several groups of all three scoters, including many adult male Surf, a few LONG-TAILED DUCKS, and a couple of RED-THROATED LOONS. On the outer wall at Point Breeze, we had two juvenile LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS. Good birding!
