[nysbirds-l] Riverhead sod fields birds LI, NY
Today at about 10 AM, I went over to the fields first to Sound/ Osborne, while there were only a few birds, I did see the Bairds with several Killdeer, which flew off to the west as I watched. No Golden plovers. Then I went to sod field East of Roanoke Vinyard, orignally saw nothing, but drove out in a dirt road next to the field to end of Grape Vines, where I found 3 Buff-breasted Sandpipers, next to a resting Golden plover and two Killdeer in the sod field to the east. I had fairly good views, took some fair photos, and if anyone would like to see them, just let me know and I will E mail them to you. [nysbirds-l] Riverhead Sod Fields LI: Buff-breasted Sands
If anyone is still interested, 2 BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPERS continue on the sod field just E of the Roanoak Vinyard on the S side of Sound Avenue. Unfortunately there is a lot of heat shimmer over the field today. On the field on the east side of Doctors Path just south of Sound Avenue at 11:30 am there were 15 Buff-breasted Sandpipers. In the nearby field on the west side of County Route 105 just south of Sound at 10:55 am there were 21 American Golden-Plovers which moved on when they were spooked by a blowing grocery bag. Earlier in Eastport the DeLalio sod farm on CR-51 east of Eastport-Manor road held 1 American Golden Plover and 14 Black-bellied Plovers. No sign of Pectorals so far. [nysbirds-l] Riverhead Sod Fields, Suffolk Co.
A quick survey, of most of the above, came up empty, however, I did pick up a Lesser Yellowlegs, 2 Solitary Sandpipers and 2 Least Sandpipers, while managing to miss the normally plentiful Kildeer! All 3 species mentioned were found at a wet area on Penny La. in Northville. I also had my dessert early last night, as we headed toward Wading River with another couple for dinner, when a lone Turkey Vulture appeared over the Friars Head Farm in Baiting Hollow! Thanks to Eileen Schwinn I saw my FOS A. Golden Plover today! She called earlier re: the 1 golden she found ( which grew to 3 before I left) in the sod field on the n/s of Northville Tpke, between Route 105 & Doctors Path-this is directly opposite an "old potato barn",which has had the dirt insulation removed from it's sides, by the current owners (or tenants). This type of insulation helped keep the potatoes from freezing during a "hard" winter, when, because of low potato prices, the farmers deceided to store their crop in hope of higher prices in the spring. Found also in the same field were 37 Kildeers and 3 "peeps", which I took to be leasts.
