On Wednesday, while in Queenston, Ontario, Jean Iron showed us a roost of vultures across the river about two miles away in Lewiston, NY. Being somewhat familiar with the village, I estimated where the roost might be and late today I searched the area and found it! It is in a residential neighborhood at the intersection of Fifth Street and Mohawk Street. The vultures were roosting in tall Norway spruce trees in a small yard on the northeast corner of the intersection. There are similar trees on the northwest corner that I suspect were the trees that they were using on Wednesday. They are difficult to get a good look at and I dont even know what the total number was - I may have only seen five or six vultures but I suspect that others were hidden in there. There was at least one BLACK VULTURE and the other four or five that I identified were TURKEY VULTURES.
This is a residential area - please be discrete when using optics around homes. To find the roost, take the main road in Lewiston (Rt 18F or Center Street) from Rt 104 or the Moses Parkway and head west toward the Niagara River. Fifth Street is less than a mile from Rt 104 and the Parkway. Turn north onto Fifth Street and Mohawk Street comes up in ½ mile or less. Good birding!
