[nysbirds-l] Wertheim NWR
This is presently the only forested area in the central Suffolk area where the trails are mostly clear of snow. A ramble of several miles produced 2 Eastern Bluebirds, a Yellow-bellied Sapsucker, and a trio of easily spooked Common Mergansers (1 male, 2 females). The posted hours are now sunrise to sunset, a welcome change from their usual banker's hours of 8AM-4PM. [nysbirds-l] Wertheim NWR (Suffolk Co.) Yellow-throated Warbler
At 8:15 or so this morning I heard a Yellow-throated Warbler singing along the Black Tupelo trail at Wertheim National Wildlife Refuge. I was pretty certain of the ID from the song but as I don't see these guys every day I hung around until I could get a look at it. I heard it again on my way back out, sometime after 9am. It was moving around, but it was roughly 200 yards north of the point where the trail takes a right turn at a gate. I started the day shortly after dawn nearby at Smith Point, where I counted 28 Sooty Shearwaters in a brief seawatch. Also interesting to me were about 40 Black Scoters, a White-crowned Sparrow, and my first Killdeer chick of the year.
