[nysbirds-l] Woodcocks and winter birds

2022-02-14 Thread Johnson, Alyssa
Hi everyone,

A really talented coworker of mine is a graphic designer for Audubon, but he
also designs his own art outside of work. This American Woodcock graphic of his
is being sold on shirts, and the proceeds from these sales are donated to the
Wild Bird Fund in NYC- "NYC's only wildlife rehabilitation center, caring for
orphaned, injured, and ill animals 7 days a week." This is not an Audubon
project, just coworker supporting coworker! Take a look, it's pretty cute, and
woodcock season will be returning to the NE soon enough (I hope).

https://everpress.com/everybody-grab-hold-1-1

Also, mid-week I am offering a presentation about "Winter Birds: How do they
Survive?" Wednesday, 2/16 @ 6:30
p.m. This is a Montezuma Audubon Center event.

Have a great week,
Alyssa

[nysbirds-l] Woodcocks in Massapequa

2017-03-16 Thread Peter Reisfeld
Timberdoodlemania is not just confined to New York City. Around 1PM today as I
was searching (unsuccessfully) for the Northern Goshawk at the Massapequa
Preserve I surprised 3 American woodcocks just west of the Pittsburgh Avenue
lake. Also seen in the park were killdeer and an overwintering catbird. Looks
to be an interesting migration this year.

Good birding,

Peter

Re:[nysbirds-l] Woodcocks around Manhattan

2017-03-16 Thread Zack
I just saw an American Woodcock about 25 minutes ago on a handicapped access
ramp leading to 799 Washington Street at the northeast corner of Horatio and
Washington Streets in Manhattan's Far West Village (kitty corner from the small
"park" where the Couch's Kingbird was first seen two years ago). He seemed a
little disoriented, and was fluttering about a bit. I went home to see if I
could find anything to feed him (no grubs handy, but I thought if he was
desperate enough he might go for some nuts or seeds), but when I returned a
few minutes later he was gone. No luck trying to refind him.

Best wishes,

Zack Winestine

[nysbirds-l] Woodcocks in Westchester

2016-03-09 Thread Joseph Wallace
My wife and I recently came upon a recovering wetland along Old Post Road
in Armonk (opposite the Beehive restaurant). There's a stream and marshes
and fields where there once a bowling alley stood (only the foundations and
patches of parking lot remain) but are now NYS property.

We went there tonight at about 5:45. A huge chorus of (wood?) frogs,
calling grackles and red-winged blackbirds, and then--at around 6:20--at
least three and likely more woodcocks calling. We caught a few glimpses
from the driveway in, but mostly it was just wonderful to hear them and
think of spring.

[nysbirds-l] Woodcocks at Jamaica Bay

2012-03-11 Thread Robert Bate

There were at least 6 American Woodcocks displaying, "peenting" and flying
around in the shrub and grassy area just south of the visitor's center
parking lot at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge in Queens County. They first
appeared at 7:15 as the light was fading but could be seen peenting on the
ground and clearly silhouetted against the sky as they flew around the area.

[nysbirds-l] Woodcocks

2011-02-18 Thread robsbate
Speaking of impending spring: on Wednesday I had a Woodcock foraging in the
Brooklyn Botanic Garden and yesterday one out at Floyd Bennett Field (also in
Brooklyn). The bird at FBF was "peenting" in the brush before hopping out onto
the edge of the tarmac and then flying off.

It won't be long now.

[nysbirds-l] Woodcocks - Greenwood Cemetery

2010-10-30 Thread Robert Bate
We were able to see 6 American Woodcocks in Brooklyn's historic Greenwood
Cemetery today. Most were in the area of the Battle Hill Monument. We
caught sight ofone walking and feeding between gravestones and another later
flew in a circle around us affording excellent views; the rest were birds we
spooked who just took off away from us. Also lots and lots of
Golden-crowned Kinglets, Chipping Sparrows, Dark-eyed Juncos and Hermit
Thrushes. Yeah!

Yesterday at 8PM we heard and saw a American Woodcock at Jamaica Bay
