A dozen Common Nighthawks were seen this evening, between 6:00pm and 6:30pm, at
the Boy Scout Camp, main entrance, along Sound Ave, Baiting Hollow. (There is
a clearing to the right of the entrance). The birds were flying west to east,
being pushed by the wind.

2017-08-31 Thread Elizabeth Dinapoli
After ANOTHER unsuccessful search for the Hud Godwit and miss of the Marbled
Godwit, we did get to see 4 Common Nighthawks flying over the center median at
Jones Beach.

Now, Arie said he spotted them first, but we really know it was me!

Thank you Stephane for the lesson! I looked up!

[nysbirds-l] Common Nighthawks at Frank Melville Park in Setauket

2017-08-28 Thread redknot
Started my informal Common Nighthawk census last night on the stone bridge at
Frank Melville Park. Had seven birds, four of which were fairly high flying,
moving in a northeast - southwest orientation and three birds that came in low
and actively fed over the pond. They were joined there by about a dozen and a
half chimney swifts, and several barn swallows. I was a little bit surprised to
not see a tree swallow in their midst.

Also had about 2,000-2,500 common grackles passing over the northern pond
flying in several flocks, all of them flying either from east to west, and
southeast to northwest. I'd be curious to know if these were birds simply
flying to roost for the night or if it represents a migratory movement.

On the northern pond were three YOY wood ducks. Enjoyed a pair of kingfishers
flying back and forth as well as two black-crowned night-herons.

[nysbirds-l] Common Nighthawks late yesterday afternoon

2016-10-03 Thread redknot
Tipped off by a phone message from Carl Safina, who had seen Common Nighthawks
foraging over the Seatuket Mill Pond a little earlier in the day, I headed down
around 5:00 o'clock to see for myself. For the next 1 1/2 hours I watched
anywhere from 4-13 nighthawks feeding over the two ponds, with most
concentrating over the Mill Pond. There was a huge hatch of small aerial
insects and the nighthawks were feeding incessantly, along with varying sized
flocks of tree swallows ranging from several swallows to a hundred or more.

What was nice about the event was that the birds were routinely skimming low
over the water and since I was positioned on the stone bridge was able to look
down on them and see their full coloration much better than the typical view of
a nighthawk - a dark silhouette against the sky.  One time a nighthawk came so
close to the water surface it forced a gadwall to dive under the water.

A little later one of the nighthawks flew toward me and proceeded to land on
the bridge landing and resting on a stone top of a bridge abutment about 20
feet away. It stayed there for a minute before being frightened off by a couple
walking over the bridge.

As dusk descended the nighthawks left except for one that stayed with it. As I
walked to the car a Great Horned Owl called several times from the wooded
portion of the Frank Melville Preserve, a nice way to cap off a most enjoyable
experience.

Thanks Carl!

[nysbirds-l] Common Nighthawks, E. Setauket (Suffolk)

2015-09-01 Thread Douglas Futuyma
I arrived at 7:20 pm at the Setauket Mill Pond (Oldfield Road/Main Street)
to look for Common Nighthawks overhead, and within a minute or two saw the
first of 7 that flew past between then and 7:40. They followed slightly
variable southwestward paths, roughly parallel to the north shore.

In years past, several observers reported fairly substantial numbers of
migrating Nighthawks along the north shore at this season. Comparative
counts of this declining species might provide useful information.

2014-08-20 Thread glennq
Greetings,

My son had soccer practice tonight at Veteran’s Park in East Northport (Suffolk
County) from 7:45-9PM. Right about here: 40.885167, -73.321511
There are 2 large turf fields at this location with stadium lighting.
6 Common Nighthawks spent the entire practice hawking insects directly above
the practicing boys. Very neat.

[nysbirds-l] Common Nighthawks

2013-09-03 Thread glennq
I’m having luck with Common Nighthawks this fall. I counted 6 in one group late
this afternoon (7:10 PM) on the Orient ferry as we passed Plum Island, and
another lone individual at 7:30PM.
All were heading west. Nothing else of note on the water.

Cheers,

[nysbirds-l] Common Nighthawks, Hauppauge

2013-08-27 Thread glennq
Greetings,

2 Common Nighthawks over my house in Hauppauge (Suffolk county) this evening.
Very similar to my 20 August post, these flew over at 6:30 PM, heading NE.

I would not have seen them, had I not been lifting a cold bottle of Peroni to
my lips, having just finished cutting the grass that my son could not find the
time to do all day today while I was at work.
Is that a run on sentence?

Cheers!

[nysbirds-l] Common Nighthawks - Sayville (Suffolk)

2012-09-11 Thread Derek Rogers
Viewing from Middle Road, 2 groups of Common Nighthawks passed south along the
Brown's River corridor this evening. I tallied 21 individuals. I've been
checking this area fairly routinely and this is the first evening of notable
nighthawk movement.

Michael Scheibel also reports some nighthawk activity near his home in
Brookhaven.

[nysbirds-l] Common Nighthawks

2012-08-29 Thread icterus
Malvern High School 29 August

Joe Giunta, Debbie Martin and I (Sy Schiff) met at the Malvern High School
Parking Lot in the late afternoon. It faces NE and opens onto a very large
playing field. At 6:31 PM, three COMMON NIGHTHAWKS came from the north flying
high along a line of trees to the east. Two minutes later a fourth bird came
by. This bird circled, closer by, showing its wing surfaces before disappearing
to the South. This species is getting harder to find in migration these days.

[nysbirds-l] Common Nighthawks, odd hummingbird, Northwest Woods, East Hampton

2011-08-30 Thread Anthony Collerton
The world seems to be back to normal out here but migration continues. Just
had 9 COMMON NIGHTHAWKS heading South over the yard at 6:45pm. Warblers today
included CANADA and Nashville among others and residents (including
Yellow-billed Cuckoo and Scarlet Tanager remain obvious).
Sammy's Beach this morning had a single ROYAL TERN and 3 BLACK TERNS plus a few
Roseates, a variety of shorebirds, and a few HORNED LARKS.

Still 6 Ruby-throated Hummingbirds at the feeder plus what looks like a
Selasphorus hummingbird (I know it's way early but it's a rufous/brown hummer -
hitting the books and sending photos out this evening).

Dinner outside last night included a single COMMON NIGHTHAWK and 2 very vocal
EASTERN SCREECH OWLS.

[nysbirds-l] Common Nighthawks & Baird's Sandpiper at Heckscher State Park (Suffolk Co.)

2011-08-24 Thread ken feustel
We visited HSP this evening in hopes of seeing migrating nighthawks. As we
drove the oval we briefly stopped in Field 7, which still has standing water
from the latest rainfall. The only shorebird present was a Baird's Sandpiper
that was frightened away by someone operating a remote-controlled model car
that ran through the puddle where the Baird's was standing! This is the second
Baird's that we have seen in a parking lot puddle in the last week - perhaps a
previously unidentified habitat sometimes used by this species on migration.
Also seen from Field 7 were two Royal Terns flying west along the shore of
Great South Bay. We were having no luck with nighthawks until we had almost
left the park when six Common Nighthawks were observed heading south high over
the roadway. This was close to 8:00PM.

[nysbirds-l] Common Nighthawks

While enjoying the Long Island Ducks game in Central Islip tonight three Common
Nighthawks appeared for a couple of minutes in the bottom of the third inning,
flying around the bright outfield lights, hawking for insects. They soon left
and one returned for a minute or two in the top of the sixth inning hawking
around the left field lights.

For those interested in baseball the Long Island Ducks beat the York Revolution

[nysbirds-l] Common Nighthawks and .... (Central Park, NYC, 8/16)

2010-08-17 Thread Tom Fiore
Central Park, Manhattan, N.Y. City

On Monday (16 August, 2010) evening at around 7:45 to 8 p.m., at least
15 (fifteen) Common Nighthawks moved southward over Central Park, as
viewed from the south end of the Reservoir there, and subsequently
seen as they moved on over the Great Lawn area, into the air-space
farther south and out of view. They were trending slightly southwest
from there. There may have been at least a few more as I was not
fully noticing them until a few passed almost directly in front of me
(that is, above but nearly directly overhead) - in any case I was able
to count 15 in a period of only 15 minutes, most coming thru all at
once in what could almost be called an extremely loose "flock", some
separated by up to 50 yards or more per bird. Their speed was
misleading, as it seemed they were just lazing along, but when I ran
out to the Great Lawn area -a distance of maybe a few hundred yards
from my 'perch' by the reservoir- most were already far away, towards
or even beyond the castle which is another 1/4-mile or so distant from
where I stood. There was little discernible wind yet clouds were in
motion so obviously the wind was in motion above the surface. Most of
the nighthawks looked to be at about 300 - 500+ feet above the ground
or water when I first saw them, and some or maybe all looked to be
climbing as they went south. I watched for another 20 minutes as dusk
really came on and saw no more in that additional time. It is
certainly the time for them to be migrating and these little weather
changes sometimes (not always!) seem to get them moving, too. Watching
the birds with 12x optics helped get on those that were a bit distant,
as they moved... Otherwise, from what I found earlier and in each day
since last Wednesday, there had been relatively scant migrants
although some of the most typical mid-August birds are going thru. It
look as though a good number of Eastern Kingbirds may have moved on,
although I'd expect some more to still be on their way south.
- - - - - -
Incidentally, a birder and naturalist in western Massachusetts
reported a very good movement of Common Nighthawks down the
Connecticut River corridor (around Northampton, Mass.) with well over
100 nighthawks seen last night (Mon. 8/16) - and there are a number of
other reports of numbers of nighthawks from around the northeast in
the last few days. If out in the evening or very early morning - look
up! And in coastal Maine, an adult male Rufous Hummingbird has been
seen & photographed - yet another summer sighting of this species, and
of a male in bright plumage, in the northeast. These reports are on
their respective state's birding list-serves.

At least some freshly arrived migrants in Central Park's north end
this Tuesday a.m. (6/17). More later...

Manhattan

[nysbirds-l] Common Nighthawks, East Northport, Long Island

2009-09-08 Thread Vinny Pellegrino
This evening around 5:30pm, two Common Nighthawks were hunting in the open
field on the border of East Northport and Commack on Clay Pitts Road.  The
birds caught my attention when I was driving home and looked into the field
with two birds that had the distinct nighthawk flight and behavior.  I pulled
into the parking lot and watched the nighthawks for a little bit.  To my
surprise was getting my first of the season Mourning warbler foraging in the
southeast corner which happens to be brushy second-growth with a house on the
other side of the fence.  This field happens to be two blocks from my house, so
I will be making more pitstops here during fall migration to see
what other birds I can discover.

[nysbirds-l] Common Nighthawks!

2009-08-30 Thread vanhaas
This morning at 10 am, There were 70+ Common Nighthawks over the Bashakill in
Sullivan County. The previous highest count this fall was 7 birds. I think
the rain has had them backed up and there must have been some sort of insect
flight today. Ed and Joanne Morse were with me as we watched this good flight
of nighthawk continually circle over the ridge along the Bash for at least the
hour that we were there. John Haas
