A Greater White-fronted Goose is on the parade grounds opposite the Nature

The bird was on the Van Courtlandt Lake before relocating to the parade ground
with Canada Geese.

[nysbirds-l] NO Hermt W.nor Shrike

2010-12-11 Thread Jerry Lazarczyk
On 12/10/10 I was at Sunken Meadow St.Pk. about 8AM. It was doggone frosty but
no joy. Norm Klein showed and showed me the locations and times the Hermit
Warbler was seen. Then Debra Allen, Randy Schutz and Peter Haskil arrived from
NYC. We all had no joy with the Hermit Warbler.

Then I ran into the threesome on the west end of Jones Beach and we had no luck
on the Nature Center boardwalk for the Shrike. We did see Black Ducks (Randy
ID) landing in the distance from the boardwalk. Randy pointed out Gannets
flying near shore but it was much too far for my eye. Earlier Randy pointed out
2 American Oyster Catchers and a nice flock of Dunlin among other common
species closer to the Coast Guard Station. That was a nice observation.

I intended to bird NYC but saw billboard sized warnings of Gridlock so took an
expedient route out of town. Now I wonder if that was just the mass transit
people drumming up business for themselves and causing me to miss a chance at
the Varied Thrush et al.

[nysbirds-l] Black Brant at Floyd Bennet Field

2010-12-11 Thread Steve Walter
There was a Black Brant at Floyd Bennet Field, Brooklyn late this morning. It
was among a manageable size Brant flock around Eco Village. Of course, on
another day, a larger selection of the million or so Brant in Jamaica Bay could
be there. Okay, not a million. The CBC next week should determine the absolute
exact count.

I could not zero in on the reported longspurs, as the flock of Horned Larks was
in motion much of my time there due to a Peregrine Falcon. This adult bird, on
a couple of occasions, landed on the ground by the puddles frequented by the
Baird's Sandpiper a few months back. An immature Peregrine was in another
section of FBF.

[nysbirds-l] Northern Shrike at Napeague

Had a Northern Shrike near the first boat launch just South of Lazy Point in
Napeague. Initially mostly feeding from perches near the boat launch but also
chased a Snow Bunting along the shore line at one point.

[nysbirds-l] Dune Rd., Merlin

2010-12-11 Thread Luke Ormand
Dune Rd. this morning was relatively quiet with no American Bitterns seen
(though there have been 3-4 seen previously this week feeding in the
marshes). A Juvenile Black-Crowned Heron was in the marsh and a male Belted
Kingfisher was on the wires overhead. The Shinnecock Inlet was virtually
vacant, with a few seals popping there heads up and 2 Old Squaw flying by.
The raft of Common Eiders was again hugging the Western jetty. The by and
large highlight however was a Merlin along Dune Rd. near Dolphin Ln. that
had just caught a sanderling. I observed it for about 30 minutes before it
was flushed by someone on a bike riding by and I lost track of it. Photos
can be seen here:

[nysbirds-l] 12/11--Central Park/Battery Park/Staten Island Ferry, Incl. Red-headed Woodpecker

2010-12-11 Thread jacob drucker

Lila Fried and I went down to bird Battery Park and the Staten Island Ferry and
found quite a few interesting odds and ends; the most unexpected of which are
asterisked:

Brant 4
American Black Duck 10
*Wild Turkey*--1 female preening in front of building towards the back of the
park.
Great Cormorant--3 on cinder block, closer to staten island
Double Crested Cormorant 20
*Black-crowned Night Heron*--juvenile being harassed by herring gull, flew into
oak and preened there.
Bonaparte's Gull--6, 5 adult, 1 first year, in large flock of ring-billed gulls
*Swamp Sparrow*--2 in some of the weedy areas in the SE part of the park.

In Central Park, we also had the VARIED THRUSH at about 1 pm, as well as an
immature RED-HEADED WOODPECKER first reported on ebirdsnyc by a Richard who
didn't post his last name. The Woodpecker was feeding on and cacheing acorns
the trees on the SE side of Sheeps Meadow. Reported by others, but not seen by
us was an ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER west of Maintenance Meadow and 2 female
RING-NECKED DUCKS and 6 AMERICAN COOTS on the Reservoir, amongst the other
regular waterfowl.

Good Birding,
Jacob

[nysbirds-l] Montauk and Shinnecock

2010-12-11 Thread sausubel
A few birds to add to today's posts from out east: At Montauk Point from
7:45-9:30, most of the sea ducks were far offshore, but there were 350 or so
Razorbills around the point, with multiple groups of 15 or more birds flying
east and many others on the water. A 2nd winter Iceland Gull flew by Culloden
Point, and there were 2 Razorbills in Montauk Harbor viewed from the west side
of the Inlet. At Shinnecock there were 2 1st winter Iceland Gulls, one on the
bar north of the parking lot at the Inlet, and one on a piling at the fishing
station. There were also 450 Common Eiders in the area, and a few more
Razorbills.

[nysbirds-l] E LI Birds: Dovekie, White-fronted Geese+

2010-12-11 Thread Shaibal Mitra
In addition to the birds noted by Anthony and Seth, there was a Dovekie off of
Ditch Plains in Montauk today, along with a Red-necked Grebe and about 25
Purple Sandpipers. At Further Lane in East Hampton, there were four adult
Greater White-fronted Geese.

As Seth noted, Razorbills were numerous and widespread. Other species that
seemed to have increased with the recent colder weather were Horned Grebes and
Common Goldeneyes, and Red-throated Loons were abundant on the water and moving
westward along the ocean-front.

[nysbirds-l] West End 2 - White-winged Crossbill

2010-12-11 Thread Shawn Billerman
Hi all,

This afternoon, after searching unsuccessfully for the Hermit Warbler at
Sunken Meadow, we went to West End. The Coast Guard Station had 3 Harlequin
Ducks, as well as many actively feeding Bonaparte's Gulls. On the very far
side of the bay, there were many thousands of Brant on the water.

After an unproductive walk along the edge of the median, we heard and saw a
single young male WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILL that landed and fed in the pines at
the turn-around for 5-10 minutes before flying west again.

Other than that, there was little of note. We briefly checked, but did not
see the Loggerhead Shrike at the Theodore Roosevelt Sanctuary.

Good birding,

Shawn Billerman
