RE: [nysbirds-l] Greater White Fronted Goose

2017-01-09 Thread Shaibal Mitra
It's been decades since people have debated the natural origins of Greater
White-fronted Geese in New York State, and a huge body of records has
accumulated, supporting the regular occurrence of Greenland-breeding
flavirostris on Long Island, and of tundra-breeding North American birds
upstate. Still, it's worth keeping an open mind.

To me, the Elda Lake bird looks like a typical flavirostris (decidedly orange
bill, dark plumage, very narrow white tail band, etc.), but my photos seem to
show that it is missing its left hallux:

https://flic.kr/p/R1SzcA

Clipping a hind toe is a common practice among keepers of captive waterfowl,
but losses of digits also occur naturally. To me it seems unlikely that this is
an escaped captive, but perhaps we need to evaluate the various relevant
probabilities--how many people keep Greenland White-fronts here, etc.

[nysbirds-l] Flyover Sandhill Cranes - Yonkers NY

2017-01-09 Thread Sean Camillieri
I just watched 3 Sandhill Cranes flying SW over Yonkers in the area between
I-87 and the Saw Mill River Parkway. Before I lifted up my binos I
initially thought they were swans or a Great Blue Heron based on size but
when I saw them through the binoculars their extended neck, longer and
more slender shape instantly ruled out any swan or heron species. Might not
be a bad idea to check Van Cortlandt Park...

Re:[nysbirds-l] eBird.org Shared Location - stakeout Rufous Hummingbird, Aquebogue (2017)

2017-01-09 Thread Ben Cacace
My apologies. The marker and name for the Rufous Hummingbird were incorrect.

The town has been changed from Northville to Aquebogue and the marker was
moved above the Aquebogue label on Google Maps.

If you wish to merge your personal location with an existing hotspot here
are the steps:

— Sign into eBird.org
— Go to "My eBird" & select "Manage My Locations" in the right panel
— At the bottom of the screen click "Show All" to see all locations on one
page
— You can sort the list by clicking on any of the headers: Location,
Country, State/Province, County, Type* or # of Checklists
— Select your personal location (it will show a letter "P" under Type*) by
clicking "Edit" on the right side of the line
— Select the "Merge" button and you'll see all nearby hotspots as red icons
— Keep the checkmark for "Delete after merging" selected
— Click the icon that best fits your location
— ... now you'll see the hotspot description above the 'Merge' button along
with the # of checklists you'll be merging
— Click on the 'Merge' button
— Answer Yes to the 'Yes or No' query

All checklists for that personal location will be combined with the hotspot
with this process.

Thanks.

Ben

[nysbirds-l] Suffolk County Birding

2017-01-09 Thread Robert A. Proniewych
Ed Becher and I spent a day in Suffolk County catching up on the reported
rarities.
An early morning stop at Belmont Lake produced the elusive Barnacle Goose
already cued up by Taylor Sturm. A stop at nearby Elda Lake produced a
roosting Greater White-fronted Goose but not the 3 Ross's Geese from the
previous day. Next up was Patchogue Lake, a previously reported Blue-winged
Teal was AWOL. The Atlantic Point Apartments in Bellport hosted the
continuing Glaucous and Iceland Gulls. Eastport Lake was completely frozen
over and did not harbor the Eurasian Widgeon reported by Ken and Sue
Feustel. A scheduled appointment with 2 Rufous Hummingbirds in Aquebogue,
where we met up with Douglas Futyma, did not disappoint. A scan of Alvahs
Lane fields did not turn up any American Pipits, though Mike Zito and
Robert Taylor had much better results. Southold did produce the Townsend's
Solitaire and Cesar Castillo got his lifer. A shortcut through Shelter
Island to the South Fork turned up a small flock of Wild Turkeys. The
Wainscott Sandhill Crane was seen earlier, but a no show when Ed and I
arrived. All in all a great birding day.
