[obrolan-bandar] Calpers CIO: Price Is Wrong For What You Get
Calpers CIO: Price Is Wrong For What You Get February 2007 Hedge Fund Daily To say *Russell Read* is unhappy with the returns from hedge funds investments for the fees his *California Public Employees Retirement System *paid for them is an understatement. Last year, CalPERS, for which he is chief investment officer, paid a half a billion dollars in management fees for returns, he says, didn't even outperform the stock market. We can get average market risk very cheaply, Read said in an interview at a conference in Geneva. We hate paying a performance fee for something we can get very cheaply. On the other hand, he said, We have no problem paying high performance fees for a manager's selection, but we find taking on average market risk inherently unsatisfying. Comparing the current business relationship to a charity where you give these people lots of money, they make a really good living out of it, and they provide you with returns that are substandard, Read predicts that the fee system may change to one where better performers get paid more for producing better-than-market returns. So far, none of this seems to be affecting institutional inflows into hedge funds, but when those investors read what Prof. *Harry Kat *of London's *Cass Business School* writes -- that 80% of hedge funds can't justify their fees, and that after surveying 2,500 hedge funds over the past 12 years, 80% of HF investors would have done better in something else -- things might.
[obrolan-bandar] Survey: More Hedge Funds Raise Less Cash
Survey: More Hedge Funds Raise Less Cash February 2007 Hedge Fund Daily Hard times hit hedge funds in the second half of the year, and that had an impact on fundraising efforts in 2006, with a larger number of HFs raising less money. According to the /Absolute Return New Funds Survey/, it took 86 of the largest hedge funds to bring in $31 billion, down from $34 billion from 81 HFs in 2005 and $40 billion via 82 funds in 2004. Most of the launches occurred in the first half of the year, raising 80% of the total, with an equity market meltdown and HF disasters such as *Amaranth Advisors* resulting in just 29 new funds collecting $6.2 billion, or 20% of the final figure. Starring in the first half of 2006, according to the survey, which appears in the February issue of sister publication /Absolute Return/ magazine, were five so-called ?mega funds,? raising more than $1 billion. The only biggie to debut in the last six months of the year was *Dillon Read Capital Management*?s $1.3 billion /Dillon Read Financial Products/. *Black River Asset Management *also launched in the second half and raised an estimate $1 billion. As further proof that well-established hedge funds will bring in the bucks the best, six of the 10 largest launches were by longtime players in the field, but the three greatest money gatherers actually came from new or start-up firms: *Convexity Capital*, which ranks first with a $6.3 billion debut; *Old Lane Management*, founded by a trio from *Morgan Stanley*, which brought in $3.5 billion; and Dillon Read, the *UBS* spinoff. Conspicuously absent from the list is /Renaissance Institutional Equities Fund/, which didn?t qualify for the 2006 survey since it launched late in 2005, but it ended the year with a HF record $16 billion in assets. *Kenneth Stemme*, senior v.p. and director of hedge fund investments at *Northern Trust Global Advisers*, expects the trend to continue ? and then some. ?I am seeing more and more herd mentality,? Stemme told /Absolute Return/, noting that Convexity founder *Jack Meyer*?s *Harvard University* endowment pedigree helped attract funds, ?As you get more institutional growth, the size of the megalaunches will get bigger. I don?t foresee a $10 billion launch, but I wouldn?t be surprised either.?
