In my case, I'm coming from Linux (production) and staring wide-eyed at a
new (to me) world with a bit of a learning curve to it. My biggest personal
stumbling block to contributing more deeply is the state of the wiki right
now. There is a little bit of doc here there but it doesn't seem very
thorough, linear, or well-maintained in its current state. Documentation is
as important as code in some thriving communities, and I would suggest it's
a value worth considering giving greater weight to here.

As I've been working a lot with userland recently, I tried to take a bunch
of my recurring questions and things that I keep having to pull out of
various Makefile includes and document them here:

http://wiki.openindiana.org/oi/userland+Makefile+targets+and+variables

This is still a work in progress. I was also considered providing a few
example Makefiles and package manifests in the wiki as illustrations of how
to deal with particular problems (a few of the xemacs Makefiles could be
useful here, as would the latest version of git), some of which I touched
on in this doc.

I would like to mention the biggest hurdle I had to overcome to make
plain user type development on OpenIndiana : I did not find where the
standard headers (stdio.h, stat.h, etc.) were hosted.

I had to experiment linking with /lib/amd64/libc.so.1 to determine what
I had to change to glibc for correct building on OpenIndiana.

A better advertizing of the public (I mean non-proprietary) set of common
headers which match the distributed shared objects would be useful

Regards

Jean-Pierre

As many of you will have heard, the OpenIndiana and illumian

one, please use the issue tracker at:
