Not sure about that but I do know that illumos-based systems have issues with the RAID controller in the Microserver G7 and G8 versions. Do you have the license file for full RAID funcionality? I would suggest to switch the SATA controller to AHCI mode and use ZFS for RAID. Note that one of the many design peculiarities of the G8 is that disk slots #0 and #1 are 6GBit SATA, but #2 and #3 are only 3GBit. We only run SmartOS on G8 here, and it works fine in AHCI mode.
