I have to say that I really wish okular to run smooth, fully featured and fast as skim currently does ... i really hope I hope this was not too much off-topic and was useful to make all peole aware of Skim. Re: [Okular-devel] SoC Ideas = proposal : Okular arranger for printing
A Diumenge 06 Abril 2008, Jonathan-David SCHRODER va escriure: Hi my name is Jonathan-david Schröder I have taken some time to read the kde summer of code ideas page and I would like to apply for a SoC related to Kde printing and Okular. I am looking for your advising me on that proposal. If my proposal is relevant enough, I am looking for a mentor to talk to. Below is just a quick idea of my proposal which actually is a mix of two SoC ideas from http://techbase.kde.org/index.php?title=Projects/Summer_of_Code/2008/Ideas . *-- beginning of short proposal -* I'd be interested to work as a SoC on the piece of software that you and your friend have been working on, and for which you submitted a proposal on http://techbase.kde.org/index.php?title=Projects/Summer_of_Code/2008/Ideas# KDE-Print. This proposal could be merged with that one : http://techbase.kde.org/index.php?title=Projects/Summer_of_Code/2008/Ideas# .28Multiple.29_image_printing_application. In the latter, a person proposes that it be possible to arrange graphics over pages before printing (one or more graphics fitting on one page, and also, graphics fitting/expanded over several pages for example...). Here is how I would see things : Okular ( http://okular.kde.org/ ), which can display several files types including PDF, could be used/extended to be the program that receives/is run to receive all the pages sent to some special pseudo-printer. The name of this pseudo-printer could be Okular graphics arranger. Choosing to send pages to this pseudo-printer which would actually send the pages to Okular, would bedone in the already present printer choice drop-down menu of the KDE printing dialog (the one on which we can choose the number of pages, collating etc...). For that new part of Okular to create, one should be able to choose that the final job be sent to the printer as: - one big job with the total number of pages, - or as a decomposed number of job reflecting the nature of the pages (ie : in the queue you would see : myOdtDocument.odt [pages 1-3] [OkularArranger-elem1/3] ; specialPicture.png [OkularArranger-elem2/3] ; veryBigPictureFittingOn2Pages.png [2 pages] [OkularArranger-elem3/3] ; and so on. * end of short proposal ---* Looking around the text pointed by the two URLs written in the proposal above, I cannot make out any correct mentor name or e-mail adress (I have one e-mail adress : [EMAIL PROTECTED] but I receive emails back telling me that the email id does not exist...). Would you accept to tell me what you think of my proposal and what I should refine it... ? Personally i think that does not belong into Okular but somewhere inside kdelibs, hopefully into a reborn kdeprint library. Should I take the time to talk about that proposal more in depth a mentor as Google recommended it for the remaining days ? As far as i know GSoC limit is tomorrow, so you should add the proposal as soon as possible. Would you know someone that would accept to mentor me for this ? Maybe someone that has done printing work lately into KDE like John Layt. Albert ___ Okular-devel mailing list Okular-devel@kde.org https://mail.kde.org/mailman/listinfo/okular-devel

[Okular-devel] Adding TextPage into the memory management game
Hi, i'm attaching a patch that adds textpage into the memory management game. I think it's mostly ok except for the missing comments and that i only cared about the pdf generator. The only problem is that our number of memory used does not match reality as there's the administrative bytes each new/malloc needs, so our number is always smaller than the reality. Comments on the patch? For the administrative blocks thing do for (int i = 0; i = 100; ++i) new double(); while(1) {} and run it though valgrind --tool=massif and see how ms_print reports the same extra-heap(lost) and useful-heap. Re: [Okular-devel] Some Fullscreen -requests
A Diumenge 11 Maig 2008, Sebastian Guttenberg va escriure: Hi all As I am writing to the mailing list for the first time, let me first express how great I find okular!! I love the marking and the continous zoom and many more features! I have some suggestions and one bug (I have installed version 0.6.3), where I am not sure whether it might already have been reported somewhere, because I did not find any way to search through the mailing list or search in a list of bug's. I would appreciate information about how that works. Now, to my suggestions and to the bug, all concerning the fullscreen mode: 1. I did not find a way to get rid of the navigation panel at the bottom of the screen in the fullscreen mode. I think it would be good to have a possibility to make it disappear and really have fullscreen, as it was in kdvi and kpdf. (or did I just overview something?) Maybe you want presentation mode instead of fullscreen mode? 2. As soon as one makes the menubar disappear with ctrl-m, some short-cuts (related to menu entries) do not work any longer. For example alt-v v f (which switches to the facing mode, as long a a menu bar is present) has no effect without menu-bar. alt-v v f is not a shortcut, just a menu accelerator, if you don't have menu, it does not work. In addition there is no possibility to assign another short-cut to this quite important menu-entry. Right, that would be a bug. We're investigating it, can you please go to bugs.kde.org and open a bug item so we are sure not to forget it? 3. Finally the bug: I am inprisoned in the full-screen mode now. I don't remember what exactly I did, but okular now always starts in fullscreen mode and there is no way to leave it (neither via the menu, nor via the corresponding short-cut Ctrl-Shift-F This is not very annoying for me as I am always working in Fullscreen mode, but I guess that it's not intended to be so ;-) If you don't know what you did to create this situation it's going to be almost impossible for us to try to fix it. A Dijous 11 Setembre 2008, Markus Grabner va escriure: Am Mittwoch, 10. September 2008 schrieb Albert Astals Cid: A Dimecres 10 Setembre 2008, Markus Grabner va escriure: Hi! It has been discussed (http://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=151614) to use a hash function to determine the name of the annotation file created by okular. The attached patch implements this behaviour (thanks Ivo for pointing me to QCryptographicHash - I looked for such a thing but somehow missed it). It works nicely in several ways: *) Annotations keep associated with the file after renaming it. *) It also works for non-local URLs (http://...) since we don't need to care for mapping the URL to some valid file name. *) Annotations keep associated with the file after downloading it from the web and opening a local copy (possibly under a different name). It works not nicely in several ways: *) Md5 sucks, use Sha1 I don't see any serious security threat by using a weak hash function at this point. All an attacker could do would be to create a modified file for which the same annotations would be displayed as for the file the annotations were initially created for. I like Ivo's proposal to use QCryptographicHash, which supports MD4, MD5, and Sha1, so these are natural candidates. It's not an attacker, it's you having two files that collide and gets you annotations from one to another. *) Reading the whole file sucks, i don't want the 100MB of my pdf file to be piped though a hash, it't probably take *some* time Just tried it on my ancient AMD64 2GHz machine and found the following computing times for a 500MB file: Calling a AMD64 2Ghz ancient makes me think what an EeePC is, prehistory? MD4: 1.3 seconds MD5: 2 seconds SHA1: 4 seconds Loading the file from a local hard disk takes considerably longer How much is that? , so I'm not very much concerned about the hash computation time. However, the readAll() definitely has to be replaced by reading smaller chunks and processing them sequentially, that was just for the proof of concept. So can you see if splitting the read gives us an improvement, 4 seconds on an AMD64 2GHz seems a lot to me. so reading up to 1MB as much would be much better imho. If an annotation refers to a typo on the last page of a huge document, and this gets fixed, the same annotation would still be displayed for the corrected file if the correction appears after the portion of the file for which the hash value is computed (at least for uncompressed formats such as PostScript). BTW, the current implementation in okular has the same problem since changing a single character in a PostScript file usually doesn't change its size. Re: [Okular-devel] Find bar and dialogs
A Dilluns 22 Setembre 2008, Pino Toscano va escriure: Hello people, few days ago, I was talking with Celeste about the problem of the multiple dialogs popping up when searching using the find bar (as reported in [1]). Currently, up to three dialogs can popup, even almost simultaneously: a) a searching for search terms is shown at the start, giving feedback that something is going on b) when the end/begin of the document is reached, a the end/begin is reached, start from begin/end? question is asked c) no results produce a final no results found Of course, all of them are a simple overwhelming, for a simple task like searching. Some proposals could be the following: 1) replace a) with a animated throbber, placed left or right the lineedit, as you can see in a quick mockup[2]. 2) Kill the dialog c), and just color the lineedit with negative colors, much like what kwrite/kate in KDE 4 already do What do you think? Re: [Okular-devel] unitialised value (CID:5881)
A Dissabte 17 Gener 2009, Brad Hards va escriure: Coverity says that there is a path through doFilePrint that can result in returning an uninitialised value (in this case, ret). (I agree: look at the path through line 83: if ( res ) ret = 0; If res is not true, then ret won't be initialised.) See run 183 for this one. We could just turn that into if (res) { ret = 0; } else { ret = -1; } but it seems cleaner to just initialise it in the first place. See below. I'm just not sure what the right initialisation value should be. Ideas? That's John's code and i think initialisation is a bad idea since if you look at .h there's an explanation of what each value means, it seems we need a new -X for this error, or at least a generic error code and then we can use it as generic initialization value of ret. Re: [Okular-devel] GSoC idea : ODF support
A Dilluns, 23 de març de 2009, Detlev Casanova va escriure: Hi there, A thing I would like to have in Okular is the rendering of the files in the ODF format (especially odp). Currently, it only supports odt but the presentation feature could really benefit odp support, with animations, etc... I think that is because OpenOffice.org takes sometimes a lot of time to load. Also, KOffice librairies could be used (I don't know how it currently works with odt) to do all that stuff but I know that those libraries can be improved a lot. I didn't think about details yet but does it look like a good idea to you ? The ODT stuff is completely different codebase from koffice, i think it would be a better idea presenting a GSoC idea that was about splitting ODF support out of koffice to a lib so it could be better used by other KDE programs, actually we already spoke of that in Akademy Dublin 2006! Re: [Okular-devel] Okular binaries for Win/Mac
A Dilluns, 27 d'abril de 2009, Stian Rødven Eide va escriure: Dear Okular developers, We have been amazed by the success of our pdfreaders.org campaign, and the amount of feedback has been really great. One very common objection though, is the difficulty of installing certain programs, the most obvious being Okular on Windows and MacOS. To make it easier for people to choose the best (as in easiest) reader for their operating system, we will shortly introduce a recommendation system with automatic OS detection. However, with Sumatra being criticised for it's non- optimal font rendering, and Skim to be removed from the list due to its dependency on proprietary rendering libraries, we are really at a loss with regards to which readers to recommend for the two non-free operating systems. Seeing that Okular is the One True Free Cross-Platform PDF Reader, we were wondering whether it would be possible to provide Okular-only binaries for Win/Mac that we could link to. It would not only make our lives a whole lot easier, but also lead hordes of new users to your amazing piece of software. Is this a feasible task? Hi, i've contacted Patrick Spendrin (one of the people involved in the KDE on Windows project) and he told me he'll try to build an easier to use Okular installer. Re: [Okular-devel] Okular annotations and Nepomuk
A Dimecres, 20 de maig de 2009, Sebastian Trüg va escriure: Hello everybody, Hi *first off: please CC me as I am not subscribed to the list* I recently discovered that Okular can create annotations which are then stored in an XML file. I immediately thought: Why not store them in Nepomuk?. So here is the question: what are your thoughts on this? IMHO Nepomuk is perfect since it is intended for annotations and it would allow you to even link pdfs (and the like) to other documents and persons and so on. I could see Okular storing the annotations both in Nepomuk and the XML file for now so we can test it a bit. What do you think? It's not a good idea because people want to share annotations, on PDF in the long run will be saving them inside the PDF and for file types that don't have this feature there exists the .okular file format you can use to send to other people. [Okular-devel] [Bug 177213] High X server memory consumption
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=177213 --- Comment #13 from Albert Astals Cid tsdgeos terra es 2009-05-25 01:22:37 --- Okular is not the most memory hungry document viewer out there, at least it's at the same level of kpdf ;-) It's fast for local viewing because to paint anything on X, it must be a X pixmap, if you already have a X pixmap you just have to paint it, if you have something else, you have to create one and then paint it. And creating X pixmaps is not a negligible time. And it's not about page rendering (that is creating the image that represents the page) speed it's about drawing speed (that is putting that image in front of the user), it's different, page rendering speed is going to be the same as that's all done in the CPU it's drawing speed of a rendered page that is much snappier. And probably you got a NO because you weren't attacking the problem from the correct point, if you suggest removing page caching or not using X pixmaps by default obviously you get a no, if you suggest having a hidden setting that disallows the use of non local memory, that would different. But now that i think i'm not sure it makes sense, because once you've disallowed any X pixmap caching even if you don't explicitely use X pixmaps for rendering you are going to use them implicetely because it's the only thing that can be rendered, so you won't gain anything at the end, it'll have the same remote memory usage at the end. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugs.kde.org/userprefs.cgi?tab=email --- You are receiving this mail because: --- You are the assignee for the bug. ___ Okular-devel mailing list Okular-devel@kde.org https://mail.kde.org/mailman/listinfo/okular-devel

Re: [Okular-devel] Problem displaying pdf files created with Inkscape
A Diumenge, 7 de juny de 2009, Jan Nikolas Dicke va escriure: Hi, my name is Jan and I'm using KDE 2.2.4 on openSUSE 11.1. Hope you are using 4.2.4 otherwise you are using a really old KDE ;-) I have a problem displaying pdf files on Okular 0.8.4. The files are created with Inkscape 0.46 and include svg graphics. Whereas the pdf files are correctly displayed with Acrobat Reader and Gimp, some parts of the graphic aren't displayed on Okular. There seems to be a special problem with the way Inkscape creates pdf files. Files I created with an older version of Inkscape are displayed correctly even with Okular. Nevertheless, because Acrobat Reader and Gimp are able to read the created files, I guess it is a problem of Okular. The attached file illustrates the problem. Are you able to reproduce it? Yes Can you tell me what to do? bugs.freedesktop.org file a bug against poppler Albert Thanks a lot, Jan. ___ Okular-devel mailing list Okular-devel@kde.org https://mail.kde.org/mailman/listinfo/okular-devel

Re: [Okular-devel] Feature Announcement: Adding zoom to Okular history
A Dissabte, 20 de juny de 2009, XTra KrazzY va escriure: Hello, My partner and I would like to announce that as a project for an Open Source Development course in a university study in, we almost finished developing (we're doing some polishing and finishing touches to the code) adding zoom to the document history, which can be accessed via the back/forward in the document buttons. We've talked to Pino Toscano a while ago on #okular and got permission to implement this feature. The questions we have now are: 1. What do you think about this feature? (is it as useful as we think it is?) How does it work? I mean, i am in page 1, change to page 2 and now change zoom, i press back in history and that happens? am i sent to page 1? my zoom changes? both? Or there is a separate zoom history? 2. Why aren't the back/forward in the document buttons in the menu bar by default, instead of in some submenu? That i'd like to know too :D Afair the reason was that it's too similar to regular next/previous page 3. How are we going to commit our changes to the project? We know you are in amidst of a feature freeze until the next KDE minor version comes out. We would suggest you to think of it more of as an enhancement rather than a feature. It's not as if we added another document format or revamped the entire Document/PageView API. an enhacement is synomim of feature, good try though ;-) Albert ___ Okular-devel mailing list Okular-devel@kde.org https://mail.kde.org/mailman/listinfo/okular-devel
