That would be great as we still have a ton of label sheets. Happy to know
they we can still put them to use.

The TSC TPP-247 continuous feed printer works well with the Evergreen web
client (we are on 3.2.2), and very shortly the development for printing
directly to full sheets of labels will be complete and then it will be able
to print to any laser printer.

I heard that too and maybe under worst case scenarios that's true but we
haven't seen that in day to day and we watched them really carefully for
the first few years. But maybe we don't have them being left out in cars
much or other bright / hot lights that would fade them. Our patron abuse
of books is usually less sanitary than that (unfortunately).

 Ours still look good, too. We do cover them with Scotch 845 book tape which

We found that the stock thermal labels, when exposed to sunlight or
fluorescent light (read: our entire library), faded quickly (under a
year), even with the tape on top (which I'm pretty sure I read
elsewhere can actually aggravate the problem).

http://download.dymo.com/dymo/user-guides/LabelWriter/LW450Series/UG/LabelWriter_UserGuide_en-US.pdf
says:

Thermal paper labels, such as those printed by the LabelWriter
printer, are susceptible to fading in two ways:

• Exposure to direct sunlight, to fluorescent light for an extended
period of time, or to extreme heat will cause fading.
• Contact with plasticizers (for example, labels placed on plastic
ring binders) will cause fading.

In the original packaging, the shelf life for LabelWriter labels is 18
months. When labels are used
for short-term applications (envelopes, packages, and so on), fading
is not a problem. When labels
are used to label files in a file cabinet, fading is very gradual over
many years. Labels applied to the
edge of a notebook that is then placed on a shelf in the sun will show
signs of fading within a few
months.

So we started using labels from http://durablelabelsondemand.com and
were happy with those; their thermal transfer mechanism results in a
much more robust label. At some point, however, a cost-cutting measure
came into place and we went back to the stock labels. (Insert
something about replacing faded labels costing human time that could
be doing more valuable work here).

Dymo labels do fade over time, but you can buy special non-fading labels.
We like the 450's, but sometimes label tracking in the printer can get off.
Make sure the sides on the spindle are as tight to the roll of labels as
you can get it ('squeeze the snot out of it', I tell our librarians) and it
will be fine. And labels can get stuck. Never try to pull the labels back
through. The printer can be dissembled but it's no fun.

Mark, can you send the specifics about the Non-fading labels?

We find that the Dymo labels do fade if they are in direct sunlight for an
extended period of time. If the item is shelved where it gets no sunlight,
then they are great, and will last. But the ones that are next to windows,
they are fading even with UV protected tape.

The stock paper thermal labels for the Dymo LabelWriter 400 do fade very
quickly, sometimes in a matter of months in my experience. We cover
them with a clear UV label protector which seems to alleviate this issue
-- however, take this with a grain of salt, because my particular
library is unlikely to keep most things in the collection for the very
long term. Most things are replaced or withdrawn within 10 years.

Dymo labels do fade over time, but you can buy special non-fading labels.
We like the 450's, but sometimes label tracking in the printer can get
off. Make sure the sides on the spindle are as tight to the roll of labels
as you can get it ('squeeze the snot out of it', I tell our librarians)
and it will be fine. And labels can get stuck. Never try to pull the
labels back through. The printer can be dissembled but it's no fun.

We're using the TSC TTP-247, if you're not stuck on using Dymo. We did a survey
of Evergreen users when we made the switch. It's been going for a year and the
labels look great. It's so quiet, and really fast. And cute, which might matter
if you're staring at it all day.

Is anyone using the Dymo LabelWriter 450 for printing spinals? We have a Dymo
LabelWriter400 that we have been using to print series labels, but, we're not
happy with it because the labels fade within a year. If you're using one and
are happy with it what supplies are you using? Thanks.

[OPEN-ILS-GENERAL] Spine label printers recommendations?

2011-05-12 Thread Janet Schrader
I did not get any responses about Evergreen and spine label printers,
specifically Zebra thermal transfer printers. Is anyone printing spine
labels using Zebra printers? If so-- recommendations, compatibility,
set-up? Help! I need answers or comments as soon as possible.

We are migrating to Evergreen this year. Many of our libraries have
Zebra printers model TLP2844 or GK24. A few libraries would like to
purchase printers to use with Evergreen and the purchase needs to be
made soon for billing in FY11.

First of all, I want to thank everyone who responded to my original question
regarding spine label printers and the Evergreen system. Your responses were
helpful and much appreciated.

It seems as if the Dymo TurboWriter 400 was the most recommended printer.

The vendor we use for printers claims that the Dymo wouldn’t be a good choice
because the printing will fade over time, especially if the books are left in a
car in the hot sun.

He recommends instead the TSC TTP 245, a thermal transfer printer. It’s over
$200 more than the Dymo and I’m wondering if it would be worth the extra cost
for the library to go this route. (They’re a small library with limited
resources.)

Has anyone out there used the TSC TTP 245?

http://www.tscprinters.com/en_US/index.php?option=com_contenttask=viewid=186Itemid=77

And has anyone had problems with the Dymo-produced spine labels fading over
time?

Thanks again for any replies!

Amy

Re: [OPEN-ILS-GENERAL] Spine Label Printers?

2010-01-26 Thread OdonLibrarian

I have templates for OpenOffice.org Calc for printing both material
barcodes and spine labels on an ordinary printer. Because we migrated from
Winnebago and had leftover spine label stock (6X5 on 8 1/2X11 sheets), that's
the format I chose for now. Another library in Indiana has an Excel template
for a 5X6 layout (but without the links I use to avoid retyping data
already in Evergreen).

The procedure is fairly simple: Dump the items needing labels into a copy
bucket, pick them up on the clipboard as CSV, and paste into the first page
 of the spreadsheet. The second page of the spreadsheet links to the data
on the first sheet and formats it. I generally try to do enough at a time
to avoid running a sheet of 30 labels through the laser printer more than
twice but that's a fairly simple workflow issue.

Having developed a preference for OpenOffice.org Calc, I haven't tried the
templates with Excel but compatibility is generally excellent. I'll be
glad to share my template with anyone who is interested. It would take some
time and effort to reformat for a different spine label layout but would be
time well invested and save the cost of a non-standard printer.

We're using the Dymo TurboWriter 400 USB printers with #30347 stock
labels here at Laurentian.

It's a thermal printer and there have been some reported cases where the
label has started to fade after a few years, so that might be an issue
(would be good to compare notes), but it's working well with Evergreen.

Re: [OPEN-ILS-GENERAL] Spine Label Printers?

2010-01-21 Thread Joe Atzberger
Some libraries have been surprised by the amount of noise a given printer
generates, something not typically listed in catalog or web retail.
 Single-label thermal printers tend to be the friendliest in that regard,
and small and quiet enough to fit at most workstations. Great for replacing
damaged labels at the circ or reference station.

I'm not sure about your library's situation, but if they are going to print
in large volumes, you should also consider a laser printer. Thermal
printers can do high quality (i.e., reliably scannable barcodes), but the 51
labels-per-minute of the Dymo 450 (current version of the 400) is still
about a fifth of that of the HP LaserJet 4050 (8.5ppm @1200dpi x 30 labels
per page = 255 labels-per-minute). To be fair, I should also say that Dymo
makes turbo and dual versions of their LabelWriter, but they're still
not that fast.

Regarding stock and durability, a combination of standard office-quality
labels and super-adhesive label protectors like
thesehttp://thelibrarystore.com/product.jsp?path=-1|23268|83632|83679|83681id=15211seems
to be more effective starting with higher quality adhesive labels on
big print runs. The reason is that the HQ labels tend to be thicker and jam
in the printer more often, and still don't match the protector's grip. The
permanence of the label may not be as important to your libraries as it was
to my former clients (K-12 schools and juvenile prisons), but I thought I'd
mention it anyway.

Printing to sheet labels is currently a weak area with Evergreen.
Right now what you do is define a form in Windows and some
character-based dimensions in the staff client, and the client will
send a form feed after each label to advance to the next form. If the
printer can be made aware of the sheet's layout (i.e. 3 labels by 10
labels) and handle the form feeds for us, then we're golden, but
though I thought I saw an example of that once, I may have saw the HP
Universal Printer driver instead with its print N number of pages per
sheet feature, which would only be good for 16 labels or so.

Of course, batch printing is more amenable to other processes, however
cumbersome. One site is using Evergreen to print to a PDF file, which
they then upload to a web page which munges it into a layout suitable
for sheet printing. Similarly, the spine label preview can be
copy/pasted into other applications, and it's even possible to match
the format needed for OCLC's LabelMe program.

You could also get at the data directly through reporting or API calls
and use another application to do the printing.

I'd love to hear how folks are handling this. Would love even more to
see resources put toward improving the situation. :)

Joe, does Koha have any code that would be worth leveraging for this?

Not really. For PDF's, the pitfall is Unicode. There is no OSS perl
module encapsulation for producing well-formatted PDFs that include Unicode
characters. The only suitable solution is embedding fonts, which makes the
documents produced huge, or having knowledge of the exact fonts on the
target user's system, or stripping the data. This is a problem with PDF as
a medium, and not just any given system's implementation of it.

But what else besides PDF is a universal enough format for cross-platform
printing?

For Indian, Korean or Lithuanian Koha users, barcodes were best printed from
an Excel or OpenOffice spreadsheet using data imported from a CSV report.
 This is, incidentally, the same approach that was used when I was at
INFOhio w/ SirsiDynix Unicorn for a few million labels.

I really like the idea of pushing data to 3rd party printers, like Kinkos or
OCLC. Maybe one of those companies would like to sponsor such a feature.
 It seems much more achievable to have a well-defined target with certain
tolerances than to target any printer, any driver, any OS, only bare bones
fonts, any acrobat reader.

 Jesse, there is a server side skin/print.css file where you can
 specify fonts and text decorations, but it'd be global for all users
 of your server.

 Right now it contains:

 .first_pre {
 page-break-after: always;
 margin-top: -0.20cm;
 }

 .not_first_pre {
 page-break-after: always;
 }

 to get around a top-margin bug with the first label printed in a batch
 of labels. You'd want to put any customizations in both of those
 stanzas.  Something like:

 .first_pre {
 page-break-after: always;
 margin-top: -0.20cm;
 font-size: 12pt;
 font-weight: bold;
 }

 .not_first_pre {
 page-break-after: always;
 font-size: 12pt;
 font-weight: bold;
 }

 It wouldn't take much hacking to create an org unit setting for
 dynamically inserting library specific custom CSS into the labels, or
 to have a textbox for such in the label interface itself.

In addition to the print.css change at
http://svn.open-ils.org/trac/ILS-Contrib/browser/conifer/branches/rel_1_6_0/xul/server/skin/print.css,
 we also use a customized version of spine_labels.js that displays the desired
font for us (the pertinent line for spine labels is
http://svn.open-ils.org/trac/ILS-Contrib/browser/conifer/branches/rel_1_6_0/xul/server/cat/spine_labels.js#L102)

Turning these into org_unit settings would be quite useful.
