Hmmm... at least for standard 151a8 installations I can't report any difficulties. I upgraded one of my installations this morning without _any_ warning messages. Hi Guys, I've read somewhere here in the mailing list, where zone does not run anymore when migrating OI to a newer version. So, is this the default behavior, provided that all required packages (or libraries) installed are the same ( name ) ? Anyone migrate zone (with a running apps, not just newly created zone) from 151a7 to a8 ? I think it is not supposed to work out of the box and reverting to latest /dev BE and updating it is the most straightforward way (151.8.1 packages deliver have a lot of libraries of different versions (newer or older than in /dev-a9), some packages were redesigned, some were marked obsolete. Otherwise, you can try to create new BE, uninstall conflicting packages in new BE and try updating... Don't be surprised when it will not work. I can understand confusing feelings (if any): now '/hipster' is version below '/dev' - I would expect '/hipster' to move first, then to update '/dev'. /hipster and /dev are different distros, different build systems and environment. All- Since people are discussing update issues for 151a9, I started looking around for information on it. There's nothing on the wiki home page yet, but I did eventually find http://wiki.openindiana.org/oi/oi_151a_prestable9+Release+Notes and the related JDS updates it mentions. I have years of experience with Solaris, but I've only been running OI for about 6 months, so I've never been through an update before. I tried a pkg update -nv just to see what the output would be, and there were several conflicts related to packages I had added from sfe or sfe-encumbered. What I wanted to stress is: a) lack of any instructions, docs and plan explanation, etc for both /dev and /hispter releases b) I had a look into dictionary: hipster is a person who follows the latest trends and fashions. - So I would expect that /hipster is moving faster than /dev. c) I would expect that changes made in /hipster are implemented to /dev (or it could be that I have wrong impression? see a) d) I am willing to help with testing, but with no idea what would be next step, it is really hard. [OpenIndiana-discuss] No login prompt when updating 151a8 - 151a9
Dear all, following the discussion we've had lately around upgrading installations, I've done so for a few 151a8 servers. While most of them were absolutely noiseless, one has failed. After doing 'pkg update', the machine rebooted as expected but then repeatedly got stuck on startup. While the server seemed to boot as always, I didn't receive a login prompt. The screen would accept key presses, the network stack would respond to ICMP messages, but neiter did I get a login prompt on the console nor via SSH. Going to single user mode on boot would work but moving on towards multi user (using Ctrl-D) would get me back into stuck state. Nothing in the logs, nothing unusual on screen, just silence. Thanks to this being OpenIndiana, I simply reverted back to the previous boot environment and everything was fine again. Any idea what might have happened or where to look?
