Re: [OpenIndiana-discuss] OI 1.8 /dev: need help (missing feature for read 'org.illumos:lz4_compress')

2014-01-27 Thread Jonathan Adams
You might need to get a newer bootable ISO of Illumos (that has lz4
support), boot your system, zpool import your root pool, and re-install the
grub from the /boot partition on that drive.

when you upgraded your root pool you hadn't got the lz4 modules installed
in your grub.

I have found explanation here (that is why I have tried to boot /hipster):

But, I am not sure HOW is possible to have this problem, since this

Only issue I can think of is upgrade from 1.7 to 1.8 (that PC wasn't

Any idea how to proceed further?

This won't work, because the ISO simply hops to your disk GRUB, which is
what's not working in the first place. You need to boot the ISO, select
the shell and then use installgrub to update the stage1/2 files on the
boot drive(s).

Then the USB is broken and is trying to boot your disks, not the USB

[OpenIndiana-discuss] Bugs 4043 and 4067

2014-01-27 Thread Stephen S. Jones
OpenIndiana Community (OpenHoosiers?),
Bugs #4043 and #4067 recently were classified as complete and were closed.
From my perspective and through the most current updates, neither issue is
resolved.

My production hardware was running 151a7 and was updated last August to 151a8
until bugs 4042 and 4067 manifested themselves. I backed out to a Boot
Environment (BE) of 151a8 which did not manifest the bugs. Since I cannot
trust my productive hardware on unreliable updates, I have been testing updates
on a VMWare virtual machine (vm). This vm was installed using
oi-dev-151a8-live-x86.iso on about 20 December and updated using # pkg update
-v.

Still, as in late last August, USB drives can be mounted but not unmounted as
me, the only user, logged-in in gnome. As root with su in the command-line, I
can # umount /media/the-USB-drive. Likewise, no trash can appears on the
bottom gnome panel on the Desktop. Neither Trash nor Computer can be
accessed by their buttons under Places in a File Browser. Also, Computer
cannot be accessed by its icon in the Main Toolbar of a File Browser. Other
manifestations of the bugs exist including the ability to use alacarte to
create and to edit gui launchers.

As Predrag (wiki.oi on 25 Nov 2013), I am starting to believe that the errors
are being caused by authorizations and privileges of the RBAC system. As Milan
suggested to Gary in comments at the bottom of bug 4067, I checked my RBAC
profiles. Issuing “profiles” reported that I do have “Console User” as well as
“Suspend to RAM”, “Suspend to Disk” “Brightness”, “CPU Power Management”,
“Network Autoconf User”, “Basic Solaris User”, and “All”. Experimenting, I
also assigned to myself the profiles of “Desktop Removable Media User”,
“Primary Administrator”, and “Software Installation”. The additional profiles
had no effect. Issuing “roles” indicates that I have the role of “root”.

I had been a Solaris user and system administrator from Solaris 2.5.1 through
Solaris 10. I have been using OpenIndiana since 151a5. Unbeknownst to me at
the time, RBAC became a regular part of Solaris with version 10. Here with OI
151a9, I am ill prepared to troubleshoot the effects of RBAC on various
programs and operations. I hope that one of us OpenHoosiers with experience in
RBAC can pursue bugs 4043 and 4067 again with the hypothesis that RBAC is the
cause and solution.

Thanks

It definitely does on the ISO version (and has done for at least a few

Unfortunately I don't recall the precise steps I followed, so I can't

[OpenIndiana-discuss] Comstar iSCSI disconnect on 151a8

2014-01-27 Thread w...@vandenberge.us
Good morning,

We have two high capacity OpenIndiana 151a8 iSCSI servers in production (besides
many 151a7's), The two a8 systems are displaying an annoying but repeatable
issue. every 7 or 8 days, Comstar will completely stop responding. From the
network side it looks like the iSCSI targets have disappeared. On the a8 boxes
everything reports perfectly except that there is not iSCSI traffic anymore. The
systems are responsive for all other services and the kernel SMB and NFS remains
up and running.

Restarting the iSCSI target service (svc:/network/iscsi/target:default) has no
effect, as a matter of fact, only a reboot of the system will get me back the
iSCSI targets. At the same time we have a7 servers on almost identical hardware
that perform like a champ on much heavier workloads. The only difference between
the a7 and a8 systems (and the reason we switched) is that the two a8 servers
have LSI2308 controllers on the motherboard which are not supported in a7 but
these are used for the boot disks only. All other storage is attached to
LSI92xx-8e HBA's.

Does anyone have any ideas how to zero in on the cause of this issue, or has
anyone seen similar behavior?

Solaris 8 actually - it's just become more and more used in later releases.

It was problem USB installation! I would say, it is not usable in
recovery case(s).

I have downloaded ISO
(http://dlc-origin.openindiana.org/isos/hipster/OI-hipster-text-20140124.iso).
Used Text installation, because it can fit into CDROM.

After (successful) booting from CDROM (was failing with USB image boot),
I choose 'Shell' and got root prompt.

Now, I have performed following steps (used several pages which were
returned by Google search as reference):

$ zpool import
# this command showed both pools I had, but needed only rpool:

$ zpool import -f rpool
# this has imported pool which was used by my system

$ zpool status rpool
  pool: rpool

$ installgrub /media/OpenIndiana_Text_X86/boot/grub/stage1
/media/OpenIndiana_Text_X86/boot/grub/stage2 /dev/rdsk/c2d1s0
# I guess i could use ONLY /boot/grub path, but I picked up this one -
it is for sure from CDROM

$ reboot # eject cdrom during reboot

Voila! My system has booted properly now:

$ uname -rosv
SunOS 5.11 oi_151a8 Solaris

$ zfs get all | grep lz4
Zecevic/web/WebDisk compression
 lz4 local
rpool/export/home/ftpcompression
 lz4 local
# I had 2 file systems with lz4 compression enabled

Now I can move to 151a9.

Thank you all for help/hints.
Best regards.

I am not usre if you are insterested in #4042 or #4043.

I can reproduce #4042 and did not investigate it yet.

Currently I am not able to reproduce #4043 with a9. Also I cannot
reproduce #4067 with a9. I hope to find some time in the next days to
investigate it more. And it is 2 years already I was debugging RBAC
related issues, so it takes time to refresh knowledge :-(

Best regards,

Milan

My production hardware was running 151a7 and was updated last August to 151a8
until bugs 4042 and 4067 manifested themselves. I backed out to a Boot
Environment (BE) of 151a8 which did not manifest the bugs. Since I cannot
trust my productive hardware on unreliable updates, I have been testing
updates on a VMWare virtual machine (vm). This vm was installed using
oi-dev-151a8-live-x86.iso on about 20 December and updated using # pkg update
 -v.

Still, as in late last August, USB drives can be mounted but not unmounted as
me, the only user, logged-in in gnome. As root with su in the command-line,
I can # umount /media/the-USB-drive.

As
Milan suggested to Gary in comments at the bottom of bug 4067, I checked my
RBAC profiles. Issuing “profiles” reported that I do have “Console User” as
well as “Suspend to RAM”, “Suspend to Disk” “Brightness”, “CPU Power
Management”, “Network Autoconf User”, “Basic Solaris User”, and “All”.
Experimenting, I also assigned to myself the profiles of “Desktop Removable
Media User”, “Primary Administrator”, and “Software Installation”. The
additional profiles had no effect. Issuing “roles” indicates that I have the
 role of “root”.

I had been a Solaris user and system administrator from Solaris 2.5.1 through
Solaris 10. I have been using OpenIndiana since 151a5. Unbeknownst to me at
the time, RBAC became a regular part of Solaris with version 10. Here with
OI 151a9, I am ill prepared to troubleshoot the effects of RBAC on various
programs and operations. I hope that one of us OpenHoosiers with experience
in RBAC can pursue bugs 4043 and 4067 again with the hypothesis that RBAC is
 the cause and solution.

 Thanks

therefore not installed after upgrade to a9.
