 Gary,
Not natively. Need to add PCI ID to driver.

The Nvidia GT 730 is natively supported.

I can't tell if it's supported with the current version of the nv

Is this one a good choice?

[OpenIndiana-discuss] Nvidia 440.x video driver support proposal

2019-11-05 Thread ken mays via openindiana-discuss
Hi,
One of the goals discussed a few years ago was to support many of the legacy
Nvidia cards within a 10-15 year coverage.

I'm proposing the latest driver, Nvidia 440.31, as it works with recent Nvidia
600-series through RTX graphic cards (also Quadro 400 through Quadro RTX 8000).
This video driver release provides nine years of recent graphics
hardware-acceleration coverage for OI.

and may be okay for gaming, but not video production. I have not managed
to get AMD GPU PRO to work even though there are instructions on the AMD

That said, perhaps there may be more luck (down the road) with AMD GPU

It was never merged into the main OpenSolaris repositories, it was only
ever available as a separate project.  (The wording on Wikipedia is a
bit confusing there - perhaps it should say "which re-integrated the
relevant parts from Solaris 2.5.1 into their OpenSolaris project" and
add a note that it was abandoned before completion.)

HI Nikola,

Hope to supply a newer Intel kernel update soon after the next snapshot

between January and April), problem with illumos, with large CPU use of a
random running process on the machine that gets stuck for tens of seconds with
high cpu use for no reason, making whole system pretty much unusable."
There was a illumos submitted patch that mentioning fixing (somewhat) a
'related' high CPU issue.
Set up a Xorg.conf file to disable HW acceleration for the Intel GPU (Option
'Accel' off) using the intel driver. You can create on another tested platform
and just use it with the option mentioned to see if you get the same issue.
Note: This means we are not using the vesa driver for any testing info. Test
your VT consoles and check for CPU issues. Let us know.

I don't see the point of testing, when I think newer intel driver already

(https://hipster.openindiana. org/jenkins/job/oi-userland/ 3476/changes)

The xorg-video-intel update is minor as the UXA backend is barely touched since
2015, so it does not affect users.
The testing part was more for Xorg itself, namely input devices.

I am on 945 graphics it works even if there is NO xorg.conf (to set up vesa
use) , I suppose newer driver is used then.
 ( $ cat /etc/X11/xorg.conf
 Section "Device"
     Identifier "Card0"
     Driver "vesa"
 EndSection )
Everything seems ok, yet VT console switching does not work when not using
vesa, (screen gets white, like pre-exposed on VT switching with Ctrl+Alt+Fn ,
F7 is to get back to X), but it can get back to X right on F7. I haven't tried
yet playing video.

VT console switching cannot work until somebody works on the i915 *kernel*
driver. This has been the case since we got the KMS intel driver integrated.

Beside that., on my Core2Duo 5600 on Dell D620 laptop, i have, since April
(bug introduced between January and April), problem with illumos, with large
CPU use of a random running process on the machine that gets stuck for tens of
seconds with hight cpu use for no reason, making whole system pretty much
unusable.

Firefox has become very slow due to their recent changes to multithreaded.

Also fonts seems too small on mine 14" 16:10 laptop screen with 1440X900
resolution upon login
I aether need to set DPI level on 122 manually in font settings to make it
more readable or I need to sent default font size form 8 to 9. I think the
first is better.

If I use vesa in xorg.conf, then everything seems to work, including VT
switching (except not tested video yet)

I personally don't see why testing communication shouldn't be online and seen
by other testers on the mailing list.

I wanted feedback first from Alexander and Ken before calling for testing. I do
not like wasting people's time with half-baked updates.

Also don't understand unneeded restrictions on lowering mailing list number
and see barring people from posting to the mailing list as bad practice.
I suggest also forming new 'oi-testing' mailing list to share testing results,
beside openindiana-discuss and oi-dev.
We also had many different mailing lists , yet Adam Stevko (xenol) disabled
all of them awhile ago.
 --search-first
Down there are posted update commands and their output with '--search-first '
as a solution for updating testing BE.

Interesting, I did not know this option. I usually change the priority with -P.

Thanks for your help

Re: [OpenIndiana-discuss] BIND 9.11.2 compile problems on OpenIndiana

2017-09-23 Thread ken mays via openindiana-discuss
 Jerry,
Solaris/OpenSolaris/OpenIndiana-related OS distros are all built from a 'shared
library (*.so)' model versus the 'static library (*.a)' model. Ensure you build
with '--enabled shared --disable-static' and remove '*.a' libraries as
applicable from your packages/manifests/etc.

I did both a 32 and 64 bit compile of OpenSSL (both successful and functional),
and then, I (attempted) both a 32 and 64 bit compile of BIND.  Both compile

That does not sound very scalable or reasonable.  Surely there must be
an identifier which is specific to the audio type and not to the

Professionally speaking, don't use the Nvidia audio processor for any serious
work.Either use a good audio processor on the motherboard or a dedicated sound
card/device (highly preferred).
I'm speaking mainly on the Nvidia audio processors integrated on their graphic
cards. You can use it forBlu-Ray/DVD/Youtube/VLC playback for basic use.
Anything display unit over a resolution of 1080p (1920 × 1080) is bad if you
think of using it for high-end video/music streaming.
Again, use it only for very basic use. Otherwise, the audio processing becomes
unstable.I suggest not using it at all, but if you do - heed the warning...

Hmm… I'd suspect, that this 12TB is one of those new "archive" drives, isn't
it? If yes, I wonder if support for those drives has already landed in Illumos.
If yes, it should be of course safe to use them from OI's point of view.

1. Check MD5/SHA256 hash of your ISO images.2. Check 'verify ISO' before

Usually, that will prevent bad burns unless your burner is out of

In supporting this, you mainly have x86 and x86_64

Peter,
1. Yes. Many end users still own old 32-bit Pentium 4-based desktops and
laptops.
2. Yes, OI could ship 64-bit only applications/drivers/etc.
OI has recent binary core snapshots and FOSS packages supporting 32-bit
platforms. Having a 64-bit only core distro snapshot and packages is just
forward thinking. Package maintainers can support either selection - but it is
no longer the norm to support both selections (32/64-bit packaging) if the
demand is not justified).

Which begs the obvious question - is anyone running OpenIndiana on

To check, use the isainfo command. If "isainfo -k" returns "amd64"
(or "isainfo -b" returns "64") then you're running in 64-bit and should
happily ignore this question. If you get "i386" or "32" respectively
then it would be nice to know.

The default Mate terminal takes half or more of 1024x768

I found the screen settings in Mate config tool but see no way to go

This is the kind of things I have no knowledge as to how to
get more information about. I am not a system developer.
After I installed the driver, I could not boot any more, and
I had to restore the system from the backup. I do not remember
whether I could boot in single user mode.

I might retry, but you have to tell me how to extract the
data you want from a computer which does not boot (using a
live-CD, copying some file to a fat-formatted USB key or
through the network, etc.)

Gary,
Use the Nvidia 304.x driver series.

We used this driver with the current oi_151a by default. Latest: 304.132
OI_Hipster is based on Nvidia 340.x driver series (Geforce 8-series and
higher). You can uninstall the default driver and use the Nvidia 304.x driver.

Re: [OpenIndiana-discuss] Hipster distro contents confusion

Hello,
No. The official snapshot is the 2016.04 (i.e. BETA) release. The 2016.08
snapshot is an ALPHA (experimental) release - not an official snapshot.
Read carefully, there are no STABLE releases of OI-Hipster. These are all
'developer snapshots' - and only tested within a limited scope.
oi_151a track was maintained in a somewhat STABLE manner (slow moving track).

And I have a few other minor unclear points when trying to understand
the ISO snapshot vs ips server stuff.

So a few questions to clear my mind of unfounded worries:

I suppose the ISOs are "hipster in a reasonably stable state, well worth
trying in a non-critical machine, likely to work just fine, mostly"?

Are the live graphical ISOs reasonably complete, including most standard
toppings for the Hipster ice cream? Or should I expect to add further
packages after the ISO is installed, in order to have a nice basic
desktop or media server experience??

Is the Gnome vs Mate issue from the 2016-08-16 test ISO a problem in the
2016.04 ISO as well???

In the future, how do I upgrade from my then current Hipster ISO distro
to the next Hipster ISO distro?
Will the ISOs contain an upgrade option?? Or is there some consolidation
package magic to use the IPS server for that??

I intend to run Hipster in a new machine, no old data to backup.

Christopher,
I'd advise migrating your data and applications to a new install rather than
upgrading.
The key supported installations are:
1. oi_151a8 - http://dlc.openindiana.org/isos/151a8/2. hipster 2016.04.21 -
http://dlc.openindiana.org/isos/hipster/

We'd rather you not lose any data or application support - so migrate to
hipster first and see how that goes.

Is it possible to have both installed but select which one to run?  I
recall that at one time, Solaris 10 offered both CDE and Gnome
desktops.  You could select the one your preferred from the login
screen.  Something similar for OI might be useful.

PS: If there are files that are required by both Mate and Gnome,
you could put them in a desktop common meta-package.

Note that on Solarish OS'es, the backtrace will sometimes warn you about the
last linker lookup failure, even when it's not relevant - it could be the
driver looked for that symbol, didn't find it because your Xorg is an older
release, and went on about it's business only to crash later.

(I think, but have not had time to confirm that this is because the code I
stuck in osinit.c years ago to catch actual errors here fails to check in
the signal handler what signal was received so prints it for every signal:
https://cgit.freedesktop.org/xorg/xserver/commit?id=98f4179156391752e6688339487458ad7828abf4
If correct, the fix would be to wrap the first chunk of that in
OsSigHandler inside an "if (signo == SIGQUIT)" block.)

Still, that backtrace looks like some invalid function pointer got put
into the list of callbacks for the wakeup routine - either directly or
by something else overwriting a crucial bit of memory with 0x32.

Otherwise we either use the Mesa software renderer or mainly use the Nvidia

There are several packages, like FlightGear, that we've use on OI for years.

Re: [OpenIndiana-discuss] [oi-dev] OpenIndiana Docs - updated

2016-05-16 Thread ken mays via openindiana-discuss

Hello,
The 'default' minimal hardware requires  =>768MB RAM. The achieved hardware
minimum recently with the latest illumos kernel is 48MB RAM (i.e. in CLI mode).
This was recently achieved by Peter Tribble.

Older recent Live CD distros like Milax required at least 128MB RAM for CLI
mode and 256MB RAM for desktop mode.
Changes were made for installer purposes, ZFS/LiveCD overhead, etc. You can
minimize a lot of this.

Sidenote: Just 10-12 years ago, very high-end 3D gaming systems used 2MB RAM
and high-end computers used 512KB-2MB RAM.
illumos development may give more accurate numbers.
Hope that helps,Ken

Some notes:
http://makruger.github.io/website/pages/docs/faq.html:
1) Sun/Oracle’s proprietary OS/NET consolidation has been replaced with
illumos-gate. => Sun OS/NET consolidation, closed by Oracle, has been
replaced...  I mean, OS/NET was open until Oracle came;
2) What are the recommended hardware specifications... I'm not sure
about 4GB... It can be true for desktop/decent server, but you shurely
can run OI with 2GB RAM or even less. I've just checked, my OI VM with
GUI has 2 GB RAM... Perhaps, we can distinguish minimal and recommended
requirements?

http://makruger.github.io/website/pages/docs/handbook.html
Besides synchronizing to Handbook on the wiki, other notes:
1) Booting physical hardware - seems irrelevant, better to provide links
to illumos HCL and OI community HCL.
2) 2.1.2. Booting Virtual Hardware
No special tricks are required for Virtualbox, just mention to select os
type Solaris 11 64-bit.
3) 2.2. The OpenIndiana Boot Menu
You should eventually be presented with a desktop. - irrelevant to
Text Install images.
4) Perhaps, need to mention that UEFI boot is still not supported.
5) 4.2  When you boot from the text installer, it immediately begins the
installation process using the previously described Text based Guided
Install.
Not entirely true, it also can spawn shell and be used as recovery image.

Other general note. If we have to use some documentation tools to write
OI documentation, they should be available in OI repository. Perhaps
it's not true for IDEs, but basic tools should be there.

Hi Sriram,

1. Elevator pitch/ Two sentence summary of Martin's work on Intel DRM/KMS.

Martin Bochnig is the Principal Software Engineer of OpenSXCE. He
volunteered to update and port the Intel-based open source kernel components of
the Intel Graphics KMS/GEM and Direct Rendering Infrastructure 2D/3D graphics
driver stack to OpenSolaris-related distros.

2. What is Intel DRM?

Direct Rendering Manager (DRM)
is a kernel module that gives direct graphics hardware access to DRI clients.
This module deals with DMA, memory management, resource locking, and secure
hardware access.

3. What is Intel KMS?

Full kernel mode setting support to run the recent usermode ddx and mesa
drivers for Intel GPUs.

4. Why are these important?

The open source Intel GEM/KMS/DRM/DRI libraries and device driver support
Intel's GPUs on the lowest level. This technology is responsible for managing
the HDMI/TV/DVI video outputs, power management, low-level graphics commands
execution, monitor hotplug detection and all the low-level bits required for
the Intel GPU graphics hardware to work. The end goal provides gen4-gen9 Intel
GPU 2D/3D hardware-accelerated graphics support for OpenSolaris-related distros.

5. What is Martin doing in this space?

Martin Bochnig is the Principal Software Engineer of OpenSXCE. He
volunteered to update and port the open source kernel components of the 2015Q4
Intel Graphics 2D graphics driver stack to OpenSolaris-related distros.

6. What can Open Indiana users do to help test?

Help Martin in support, testing, funding, and driver-related feedback.
Support for OpenSXCE is welcome.

7. How does this fit in the Open Indiana roadmap ?

The end goal provides gen4-gen9 Intel GPU 2D/3D hardware-accelerated
graphics support for OpenSolaris-related distros. This project will support
legacy Intel GPUs, Intel HD Graphics, and Intel Iris Pro Graphics (aka Intel
Sandy Bridge/Ivy Bridge/Bay Trail/Haswell/Broadwell/Skylake).

8. How does this fit with the Illumos cause?

The goals of the illumos project provide community support and
improvements to the original OpenSolaris-related OS/Net source code. Intel
GPU-specific laptop users, sys admins, and developers requested basic 2D
graphics driver support in their assistance to the illumos project goals.

Sidenote: I'd like to recognize Randy Fishel, Principal Software Engineer at
Oracle, for his 'status of Intel DRM/KMS' presentations and documentation on
the kernel-related Intel graphics driver port at Oracle for the Solaris OS
product.

Hope this info helps the Solaris/OpenSolaris/OpenIndiana and Intel graphics
engineering community,
Ken Mays

My hesitancy with updating is primarily due to lack of available time,
and not because I don't want to update to hipster or
illumos-current+oi_151a9. Is there a reason to not update to
'hipster' and to prefer illumos-current + stale oi_151a9 applications?

I am noticing residue (e.g. iostat entries for non-existing hardware)
left behind from previously replaced hard drives. Probably I did not
use 'cfgadm' correctly to tell the system that a SAS drive was
permanently removed. I think that the problem started from before I
recently replaced a SAS drive though. It must be due to the flaky USB
pool hardware.

Bob

Bob,

No need to update to hipster, just update your kernel (osnet) consolidation.

IPS: hipster-2015

Name: consolidation/osnet/osnet-redistributable

This was just to update to the latest kernel environment patches from Illumos.
Don't do anything without
ensuring your specific bug is fixed (or improved) with any kernel update (saves
time and effort).

I going to put something on the WIKI to help resolve some of these issues.

Interested if "re-generating /dev/rdsk and /dev/dsk device entries from
scratch" resolves both problems.

Nikola,

Actually, you would just delete the login*.json file and use the sql* file I
mentioned to get FF to use
the older file. There is a procedure on the Mozilla site to do this.

Last pass is just a option. The standard way is the one posted on Mozillas
site.

Nikola,According to the support page the password data can be found in
~/.mozilla/firefox/key3.db and  ~/.mozilla/firefox/signons.sqlite files. These
files needs to be read with a sqlite editor. There are other alternatives like
extensions that do so too for CVS/XML formatted output/input.The LastPass
Password Manager addon lets you store and encrypt your passwords in Firefox. It
automatically exports (and deletes) the passwords stored locally and plainly
during installation to your LastPass Vault. It also has a feature for
generating a random password for a particular website.Enjoy,Ken

There is a problem with recognizing passwords in Firefox 38.2.1 if using
Firefox 24.8.1 before.

I consulted someone on Mozilla IRC that told me there were and move in
password saving format in soem ESR in between,
I have on FF 24.8.1 signons.sqlite and 38.2.1 uses logins.json for
storing passwords,
so jumping first to soem intermediary ESR would be wise.

There are Oracle contributer sources for the paches for Firefox at:

[OpenIndiana-discuss] Security awareness: Update to Firefox 38.2.1 ESR or greater

2015-10-22 Thread ken mays via openindiana-discuss
URL: http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/firefox/releases/38.2.1esr/contrib/
Mozilla Firefox is an open source web browser. XULRunner provides the XUL
Runtime environment for Mozilla Firefox.

A flaw was found in the processing of malformed web content. A web page
containing malicious content could cause Firefox to crash or, potentially,
execute arbitrary code with the privileges of the user running Firefox.
(CVE-2015-4497)

A flaw was found in the way Firefox handled installation of add-ons.
An attacker could use this flaw to bypass the add-on installation prompt,
and trick the user into installing an add-on from a malicious source.
(CVE-2015-4498)

All Firefox users should upgrade to Firefox version 38.2.1 ESR or greater,
whichcorrects these issues. After installing the update, Firefox must be
restartedfor the changes to take effect.

Re: [OpenIndiana-discuss] No longer using OI Desktop

2015-06-05 Thread ken mays via openindiana-discuss
Jonathan,
Very good points as some similar issues haunt the BSD/Linux desktop worlds.. I
remember when I mentioned that Solaris 11.2 still lacked decent AMD/ATI Radeon
support or when OI-Hipster started with a newer Nvidia driver that dropped
Nvidia GeForce 6000/7000 support used on my laptop. Had to suck it up and move
on, use an older OI release, or adapt to the newer OI-Hipster releases
Here are a few things I've done:
1. You can use PDF Studio, linux VM, or Wine for using later versions of Adobe
Reader.2. Intel driver support affects BSD, all OpenSolaris/Illumos distro
releases, as well as even Solaris Solaris 11.2.3. OI is as flexible with
desktops as BSD/Linux distros. Not really a major issue - just your choice.
Windowmaker is still used.4. FF 17ESR 24ESR are supported. Flash Player 10
11.2.202.223 varies. (see:
https://helpx.adobe.com/flash-player/kb/archived-flash-player-versions.html)
There is now FF 37.1, ported to OI which is a bit leading-edge so your mileage
may vary there as well
Using other OSes is a matter of choice and many of us like the 'new and shiny'
applications available on those distros. Like a toolbox,it is a matter of
picking the best tool (i.e. distro/OS/app) for the job.
The other thing I mentioned was the older linux wrapper, QuickTransit, or other
VM/hypervisor tech option which lets you run most linux apps without porting
everything. I worked with that before I got more into Wine ports, but that is
just another option.
Otherwise, use what works best for your desktop needs.

Just a note to say that I have stopped using OI on the desktop, and have
moved to the backup system of Ubuntu on the laptop.

OI Hipster no longer worked well with Firefox provided on the Mozilla
website (every time a dialog box appeared there was a 50% chance it would
crash, and a 100% chance if the mouse cursor went near it), and the version
24 in the repository didn't run flash at all, so I couldn't use the
Enterprise Manager from Oracle.  I got around this using Martin Bochnig's
version for which I was very grateful.
The Mozilla provided Thunderbird suffered the same issues as Mozilla
provided Firefox, dialog boxes kill it (file attachment to emails was an
instant death, open with the same) and the OS provided Thunderbird core
dumped without starting.  I could get around the file attachment by
dragging and dropping from the file explorer onto the message, I could live
with the open with by letting it use the default application (which
didn't work) then picking the files up from /tmp in the correct application.

The Adobe Reader 9.3 core dumped instantly.  I know that evince works well
as a PDF viewer, but since I work with Electronically signed documents;
Adobe is the only graphical application that deals with these correctly.  I
worked around it by not checking any signing of the document.

There is no longer a working Intel graphics driver, although I could get
around this by removing the driver and running in vesa with the
915resolution program.

I started to play with making the ubuntu partition work better with our
network and settings, getting sccs, autofs, openldap relication, etc. etc.
working, and in the process of mounting my zfs root (to access the /etc
directory of OI) I managed to stop a working BE from booting, meaning that
I was forced to use a BE after the upgrades that broke all of the above.

Consequently, Ubuntu died on my laptop during an system upgrade where it
decided to uninstall the Intel graphics and disk drivers (would have been a
serious win for beadm btw) and rather than trash the computer and all the
settings I bought a new internal drive to copy all of my files.

My laptop was dual boot on an 80Gb harddisk.  I bought a new 1TB harddisk
(was wondering about SSD, but felt that if I wanted to run Illumos I'd be
better with spinning rust because of TRIM) ... I thought about the issues
as stated above ... and I installed just Ubuntu on it.

I feel a little guilty about it, like cheating on your first love, but I
don't feel guilty about the 25 second boot times (as opposed to 5 mins) or
the fact that I can run programs without them crashing.  It also allows me
access to more updated versions of software, and versions not available on
Solaris (chromium, etc)

I'm still keeping OI on the servers, ZFS root FS, Virtual network
interfaces and Zones are brilliant, and no OS can compete, but I have
decided to give up on the desktop.

Thanks for reading this.

I can imagine that nobody wants to contribute source code to a
community if you are banned from the community lists.

I think it's the other way around.
People never seen contribution for years form martin and saw political
off topic posts and other off topic things.

As a result the CDDL license forbids you to distribute the
distribution if the source code is not made available.
So basically, by acting this way, someone is killing a potential
Illumos based Distro from which we all would benefit.
As said, it started other way around.
Also mailing list membership never stopped anyone of posting it's
patches, so it is just inconvenience, not an obstacle. So it's not
techical but someone's mind problem.

Also there is possibility of making other mailing lists, too. But if
someone is not following licenses for years it's known where the root of
problem is..

Ways of being included in public talk is if person is not attacking
other people or project , being on-topic
and .. that's it.  Maybe also a bit of positive attitude :)

To me this does not feel good. Apparently Illumos has no professional
governance model to resolve these issues.

Please take your question to illumos.
Apparently it surely has professional level of managing things, that's
one of the reasons they ditched Martin.
If Martin to accept change to on-topic, no grunges way of dealing things,
then it's all OK. He needs to change, not other way around.

If this can happen, any distro developer or vendor would think twice
before developing on Illumos. And that is a bad thing for the whole
 Illumos community.
This is bullshit
because as I explained sending and releasing patches have nothing to do
with mailing lists.

Root of the problem is f someone does not understand that contributing
code back is good thing for himself and everyone.
Posting politics together with rants without contribution does not
constitute contribution.

So I would suggest we think of a better way to approach this than
hoping it will be solved by itself.
I would like to keep de OpenSXCE distro available for anyone and at
the same time construct a transparent Illumos distro support model
which will support current and hopefully new distros.
Call it an incubator package or kickstart package which would inspire
 new development on Illumos.
 All suggestions are welcome.

Only way it would solve itself is if people are kind to each other,
_understand_ that copyleft

Are you getting 0 byte downloads? I used to have that problem beginning with
FF 24 or 26. The problems ended when Hipster upgraded GNOME to mostly 2.32.

If the file size where you downloaded the file reports that it is 0 bytes,
look in /tmp for a file with an 8 character name followed by the extension
and then .part; i.e. Wxqitlyu.pdf.part. Copy or cut the file and paste it to
where you downloaded the file to. Then select the faulty file, press F2, copy
the filename, then delete the file. Finally, rename the .part file with the
original name of the downloaded file. A pain but worked for me.

I too use the tarballs. 31.6.0esr was added on April 10th.

hmm ... I do appear to be stuck at an old version of the intel driver ...

Same (1024X768 fixed screen resolution) happens with intel 945 graphics,
 that worked OK till 2015.
I think it also worked in 2015 before last update.
Only, Hipster does not update 'entire' package on every update, so I can
not update from 20141010 to 2015 prior to latest update of 2015. (destroyed
it before another 2015 update). So 2015 is not usable currently for desktop.

Also , managing screen brightness from GNOME applet fails in today's
hipster-2015 , this is second blow to Hipster Laptop use since standby
stopped working in Spring 2014 (also destroyed old Hipster BE where it last
worked so can not go back to it to see what changed)

When updating, even when /opt is cleaned and mounted and work like that
right after that in 2014.1 (separate issuue on freezing display on logging
as another user - I should report user's settings maybe),
after update to 2015 it needs also cleaning /opt and rebooting again to
 boot right.
Obviously update mess with installing something in /opt under
 /opt/install-test
and leaves dirs of sub-datasets in there. (That is problem from before
 20141010)
It is suggested it is illumos problem and to cry there for leaving /opt in
 piece... Let's cry.

Re: [OpenIndiana-discuss] All 32-bit-only X device drivers removed from Hipster -??

Removing 32-bit support was not until another release from now.

 Hello.

I think I have to comment some statements to make them clearer.

I have been reading 'Hipster' change log, posted on Openindiana wiki
 under the page:
 http://wiki.openindiana.org/oi/oi_hipster
and I noticed that alp did All 32-bit-only X device drivers removed.,
 just after updating them.

First of all, we removed all old X device drivers. The full list is the
following: apm, ark, chips, glint, i128, i174, neomagic, rendition, s3,
s3virge, silliconmotion, sls, tdfx, tga, tseng.

Note, that they were dropped upstream, so I can't even suggest that they
were tested by Oracle developers. If noone has tested the code, it means
it doesn't work. If someone wants to support them - I means build with
new Xorg for BOTH 32-bit and 64-bit Xserver and test that they actually
work, we'll add them back. Good news is that I haven't seen these
devices in the wild for ages. Last s3 I've seen was on my Pentium
133-based workstation. Anyway, vesa should support them. I can test (and
care about) nvidia, radeon, virtualbox and (now) intel video adapters. I
haven't tested intel during update (as I didn't have necessary hardware)
- and you see that it led to breakage.

As recently it was mentioned on mailing list by alp, that he is thinking
of removing 32-bit hardware support for no clear reasons,
Remind you that all Openindiana ISO disks till now both work on 32-bit
and 64-bit x86 hardware, both as LiveDVD media and after install, with
most of applications being 32bit on 64bit hardware.
Removing also such excellent functionality is also questionable.

I think about removing 32-bit hardware support for the following reasons:
- (the main one) it allows us to be closer to upstream and so decreases
work on porting software from upstream. When only 3 men do something for
distribution on regular basis, it's a great win (also think about new
bugs, which can be unique to 32-bit applications, see, for example,
https://www.illumos.org/issues/5608);
- 64-bit ABI is cleaner and we should think less about long file names
compilation environment, ability to use more ram and so on (for example,
do we really need 32-bit PostgreSQL or Percona Server ?);
- testing... Everyone runs 64-bit systems. When we broke Gnome on 32-bit
systems, we found out it only two months later, because Jim decided to
install OI in 32-bit VirtualBox VM... Perhaps, just noone uses Hipster
on 32-bit systems?

Anyway, it was just a suggestion, not stated goal.

Those are machines coming brand new with 32-bit OSes in March 2015 with
no less then 2GB of RAM or 4 with less usabe, that is still considered
'just fine' amount for many desktop and small server needs. Also this
kind of hardware is all around us and it is simply not the case that
'every computer in last 7-8 years is 64bit',
, but also vast amount of them has up to 4GB of RAM and 32-bit OS es
installed and that is big potential also for OI use that, should not be
 destroyed.

Really, I can't imaging doing something besides basic testing on PC with
2 GB of RAM. Your FF will eat first one, ZFS arc  the second and IPS
will go in swap... And what for do you need 32-bit server? The last
32-bit server we had was shut down it seems in 2012. It had 2GB RAM and
run FreeBSD 6.4 Oh, no, we still have one gateway which runs FreeBSD
4.6.2 and has ~ 400M RAM. I hope you are not going to run OI on such
server :)

If some techical things are in mind here , then OI should firstly have
at least some or ANY release, following /dev that could fully support
32-bit and not, before that move and not letting down existing users.

As I mentioned, I'll help man who wants to do stable, release or
what else based on current Hipster. But it's impossible in current
situation when we don't have enough developers.

True, if we consider it from our 'full-fledged' GNOME 2.32.1 desktop
environment deployment perspective.
But, the basic GNOME 2.32.1 desktop environment is there. Some work exists to
finish porting the otherpackages - but nothing major.
Also, the GNOME 2.32.1 'platform' foundation is complete. Meaning, all
GNOME2-based applications currentlyexisting are portable to OI with minimal
fuss (aka non-kernel related).
See you in two weeks!

Re: [OpenIndiana-discuss] is this project still active

2014-10-11 Thread ken mays via openindiana-discuss
Hmmm,

OI actually has a roadmap - we call it the TODO list.

Also remember, OI is a 'CORE OS' Live CD/DVD desktop/server distro - not a
buffet or extravaganza OS distro.

A lot of the original major work was already done. Most of the work now is bug
fixes and upkeep.

Most users may not know that many major OS distros only release a CD/DVD
release/snapshot ONCE a year.
The release stable snapshots that were still buggy and not fully tested. Some
apps wouldn't even load. Yet, they
claimed a 'stable' software release. This still goes in the commercial desktop
wars and open source distros.

Also, OI is not so much about being a OI developer (remember, it pulls 'more'
from the upstream developments as well as illumos developments). A core OS is
not about glitz and glamour. You want to provide upkeep to a snapshot of core
consolidations.

So in shortness, we have today:
1. kernel environment (illumos-gate)
2. Userland
3. Xnv (X11)
4. Desktop UI (JDS)
5. Installer
6. package management

Most OI work consists of the upkeep and packaging of #1, #2, and #4.

The roadmap consists of providing the next distro releases and importing recent
changes from upstream consolidation providers. The upstream development teams
have done the heavy-lifting, code patching,
and code review.

So , if something does not work - it usually is an oversight from upstream or a
bad compile or packaging job.

File a bug or enhancement report.

Sidenote:
The OI project only need a few dedicated people maintaining it - not thousands
of developers working on the actual project (in reality, it already has that).
Think 'very small' business - how many employees are operating most of the
small businesses in your current city/town? Normally, 1-6 people. Most
departments in small or
med-size companies have teams of 1-6 people. So, there is a misconception of
needing a lot of people
for the project or small/micro business. Most Linux OS distros are worked on by
1-2 people per distro.

The OI project truely benefits from EveryCity's working capital, resources,
overhead, and hosting solutions.
That is actually an understatement. EveryCity has gone above and beyond
supporting both the illumos and
OI project.

So my point is that you should support those small businesses that sponsor and
support the OI project. The
real companies behind the scene.Give them credit where it is due. Also, support
those students or people
working at universities and colleges, professional developers, and enthusiasts.

Money is not everything, but time is...

Re: [OpenIndiana-discuss] Yikes, completely unexpected bootup problem

2014-10-11 Thread ken mays via openindiana-discuss
1. Do a full power down (unplug power totally, wait about a minute, replug
power)
2. Go into BIOS - see if your HD(s) are recognized there.
3. Check out your BIOS, make sure things look. Fix issues. Save/Reboot from
there.

If your drives are good, you are OK. Check dirt/cables/connections. Then, if
you can access your drives
through BIOS, try checking their health (if your BIOS lets you)

Last night the room where I keep my computers was pretty warm as I
closed things down for the night I decided to shut down the xw8600
which I don't usually do. Its not a terrific heat source but seemed
like anything I could shut down would help the room cool down.

And just so readers don't think this was an unusual sweltering heat up
and start thinking along those lines for cures... it was not unusual
since I am running 4 computers in a small room. There have been no
reports on any heat up problems so I'm talking about computers at
temperatures well within operating range.

Next day, I discover I cannot get booted up. The machine goes thru
the usual chain of events but instead of booting on up it ends with a
message like:

`No system disk or disk error...
replace and strike any key when ready'

My first impulse was to check connections, then boot to bios to see if
any disks were not recognized or if I could see any other indications
of actual hardware problems.

I could see none but don't really have enough experience or skill to
really say it all looked ok.

I can say the discs all appeared in the order I expected.

I have not seen any indications from logs or whatnot giving me any
clues or expectations of a problem.

My setup is using mirrored pools of matched pairs of discs. The boot
disc and its mirror `should' be able to boot from either one.

So I switched the sata wires so that the mirror would be in the boot
position and tried that got the same result.

From there I started trying to think what I might have done recently
that would end in this result The problem is, that the machine
has been up a good while so not so easy to remember everything I've
been doing.

The one thing I came up with as a possible problem creating action was
a very recent install of vbox and the setup of two linux vms.

Installing vbox does fiddle with ethernet addresses and such ... but
its quite a jump to causing a non-bootable situation.

I really don't know how to start debugging this situation and not even
sure what I should be reporting here to give any possible helpful
posters a chance at the problem.

The machine has no cdrom drive as I disconnected them in favor or more
hdd. So, have not yet booted from a live cd or the like. I can
either disconnect a non-boot drive and reconnect a cdrom dr or use an
USB.

Any troubleshooting advice or requests for information would be quite
helpful.

2014-10-10 Thread ken mays via openindiana-discuss
You missed Tribblix and DilOS and a few others. Same as in cars, why are there
so many of them that do
similar things ??? Choices.

Tribblix, XStreamOS-Desktop, and OI are the current leading 'desktop-oriented'
distros. Those distros differ in
package management and default desktops (amongest other things). OpenSXCE was
one of the leading
desktop distros for the OpenSolaris community that supported both x86/x86-64
and legacy SPARC platforms.

As in cars, people working on similar things can contribute to each other as
well as the big brother distro
(aka Solaris). Some distro projects are self funded or corporate sponsored
(Nexenta, OmniOS, SmartOS, etc).

OI was more about the foundation of testing the latest Illumos kernel snapshots
and porting the core upstream consolidations - while supporting a desktop UI
experience. People wanted to support the 'core OS' consolidations and some of
the legacy OpenSolaris core projects.

People then branch out and spread their wings to
build/consult/enhance/embrace... hence, like a phoenix

For /dev, that was JT-EC and the many contributers to OI_151a that either built
consolidations or tested the distro.

If new /dev (hipster), the hopefully it gets tested as 'good enough' to replace
/dev.

Really, there is mainly the testing of userland. SFE is based on backward
compatibility so is tested and updates
are done on things that may not work. Are major upstream core consolidations
are compiled on hipster as the base distro.

So, hipster is about as 'production-ready' as oi_151a9. If not, time to focus
on providing feedback.

Hipster provided the recent kernel builds and
updates from the upstream consolidations.

We had discussed hipster as being oi-151a10.

/dev is just a timestamp on a snapshot. A Hipster snapshot can replace /dev
once the major consolidations are successfully built and tested.

Hipster is like upgrading from Win98 to Win7. You'd want a clean install to
test and use. Migrate your apps over to the new install. Usually takes about
1-2 hours rather than fighting over upgrade issues.

advice as to what is best to do here.

You have done what most of us do, tried the available options in the
 appropriate area.

I'll continue the install assuming, that bios setting can be changed
if necessary without having to install all over again.

Hopefully someone experienced with this server (HP xw8600) will be
able to advise me about this item.

This issue is seen if the dvd drive isn't working after the kernel is
running. I have seen it many times.

The boot loader gets the kernel and base drivers and part of the OS
into memory, and that usually works.

Then it needs the kernel and drivers to recognize the sata controller
and drive to mount and access the rest of the system files, which is
 where it failed.

The 'cure is to try all bios settings affecting the dvd drive, which
is what you have successfully done.

I have in the past resorted to IDE drives, or booting from USB drives,
which can be even more problematic to try to resolve the problem.

So well done, you have made it a few rungs up the experience ladder.

Hah... and so I have.  But is there any reason to prefer one of the
settings that work over the other.

Either:
Separate IDE Controller–offers standard SATA supports (four ports
  only).
(The one I used)

Or:
Combined IDE Controller–makes the SATA controller look like an IDE
controller and offers best IDE compatibility (two ports only).

For example: Does the second one above leave more usable sata ports?

I like what Ian said. although, 4U is a bit daunting.

You can opt for 1U-2U, 1-2 processors.

You can have a chassis with 8 drive bays. Fit for = 18TB of storage.

From there you can get solid state HDs and regular drives of your choice.
Simple controller that can handle them - and has a driver for it.
Your HD vendor/OEM usually know that info on controller/HD compatibility.

You can also go for a separate NAS storage unit.

Point is there are a few options and custom servers or the cheap ones on eBay
for $500 (i.e. Dell R710 or similar)...

would be a better fit. Also, I was away from shopping for new server gear for
a while and its compatibility with illumos in particular, so I'd kindly ask

SmartOS would be a good fit if you are combining storage with KVM. USB
booting also saves a couple of drive slots!

The company's preference is to deal with HP, so while it is not an
impenetrable barrier, buying whatever is available under that brand is much
simpler for the department. Cost seems a much lesser constraint ;)

HP's bundled RAID controllers can be a problem, make sure you can get
something with IT firmware, or at least JBOD support.

I am less certain about HBAs (IT mode, without HW-RAID crap), and the
practically recommended redundancy (raidzN? raid10? how many extra disks in
modern size ranges are recommended - 3?)

That all depends on the number of drives and the workload.

Also i am not sure about modern considerations of multiple PCI buses -
especially with regard to separation of ssd's onto a separate HBA (or
several?) to avoid bottlenecks in performance and/or failures.

SSDs can be SATA and the hard drives SAS.

Finally, are departmental all-in-one combines following the Thumper ideology
of data quickly accessible to applications living on the same host without
uncertainties and delays of remote networking still at all 'fashionable'? ;)

They are with Joyent!

Buying a single purchase initially may be easier to justify than multiple
boxes with separate roles, but there are other considerations too. In
particular, their corporate network is crappy and slow, so splitting into
storage+server nodes would need either direct cabling for data, or new
switching gear which i don't know yet if it would be a problem; localhost
data transfers are likely to be a lot faster. I am also not convinced about
higher reliability of split-head solutions, though for high loads i am eager
to believe that separating the tasks can lead to higher performance. I am
uncertain if this setup and its tasks would qualify for that; but it might be
expanded later on, including role-separation, if a practical need is found
 after all.

You can easily get all you are after in a 4U all in one.  Keep the
system simple if you can.

PS: how do you go about backing up such a thing? Would some N54L's suffice to
receive zfs-send's of select datasets? :)

Another, low spec Illumos box with plenty of storage.  Performance won't
be an issue, so you can use wider raidzN vdevs to boots capacity.

Re: [OpenIndiana-discuss] Tribblix update

2014-05-26 Thread ken mays via openindiana-discuss
Other notes on Tribblix vs OI:

1. Tribblix is also a 'install-only' DVD and USB option at the moment versus
the 'Live-DVD' option of OI. Also, it has support for automated installs in an
easier fashion than OI.

2. OI is a 'server-centric' distro. Many packages community and/or sponsor
supported are for server-based applications. As mentioned, GNOME/JDS is the
primary desktop environment supported by OI development.

3. Tribblix uses the 'overlay' concept in managing application packaging versus
individual packages. Also, this supports a better model of managing zones and
packages within those zones.

4. Tribblix is one of the few illumos-based distros with the latest FOSS
packages and Enlightenment/Xfce/GNOME support (mentioned already, but important
to note).

Note: Enlightenment 0.18.8 and Xfce 4.10.0 can be built with the developer
overlay option. Some updates needed there.

5. OI is a 'core distro' with value-added packages. The upstream consolidations
is 'the bulk' of what OI supports and 'maintains' within its infrastructure.
There is also a tendency to provide some compatibility and upward crossover
development to Solaris 11.x track. Tribblix tends to become more
'bleeding-edge' - releasing new technology and ISO images with the latest
illumos kernel snapshots at a faster pace.

That is, of course, a fair question.

If you think about the diversity of distros in the Linux world, they
tend to be differentiated in two primary ways, by packaging, and
by function. Where function could be desktop or server or
appliance, with subcategories in each (such as the choice of
desktop environment).

Tribblix differs significantly from OpenIndiana in both respects
- packaging is SVR4 vs IPS (and that is a deliberate choice);
desktop is Xfce and Enlightenment vs JDS/Gnome. The server
functions of Tribblix aren't yet fully fleshed out, but again it's
likely to do things differently.

Oggetto: Re: [OpenIndiana-discuss] vbox 4.3.6 guest problems
Hi Gabriele,
Out of curiosity I just tried cairo-dock on OI hipster. I get a black box
around the dock if I'm running it without compiz.
Are you using a compositing window manager?
I'll give it a try in VBox within two days (no VT-x here) and report back.

Hi,
I was wandering if OI suffer the same problem we're facing on XStream Desktop
(working on beta2).
Latest vbox 4.3.6 delivers video drivers solairs with X11 1.13.1 and 1.14.5, at
last!
So we should not need to deliver our own build of additions any more.
BUT...
We tried the 4.3.6 additions, both with X11 1.13.1 (beta1) and 1.14.5 (beta2),
and cairo-dock
is horribly painted with a black background all around, and it also glitches,
and more bugs.
Running with -c works, but obviously many nice effects go away.
With -o it's a madness.
Debugging the code, we discovered that it actually finds a correct stencil
buffer visual with transparency
on the vboxvideo driver, but then everything is painted bad!
Is anyone capable of trying OI on vbox4.3.6+drivers and run cairo-dock in ogl
mode to see if you
have the same happening?
Thanks for any help
Gabriele.

Re: [OpenIndiana-discuss] Use JDS (from jds.openindiana.org) on top of /hipster installation

Hipster IPS needs cleanup and catalog reindexing to remove legacy cruft.

OI-JDS is missing a few updates from the latest upstream JDS (like latest
Brasero patches).

Suggest virgin build of OI-JDS on hipster ISO release for testing baseline.

You can get GCC 4.4.4 from pkg.openindiana.org or /hipster repo which is GCC

John,

Best to schedule maintenance and backup the server data/apps. Install oi_151a8.
You can update from that point.

If that is not preferred, you can follow these notes from the wiki:
http://wiki.openindiana.org/oi/Upgrading+OpenIndiana

Notes:
1. pfexec pkg rebuild-index
2. pfexec pkg refresh --full
3. pfexec pkg image-update

Noted but that's from 09-10, I haven't had any problems with the 5800 series or
the current 7 series (on linux). I can probably dig up a story about most
manufacturers and someone's bad experience with them. I am not saying the

just prefer to come back to OI from ubuntu when possible.

Grant,

I didn't use the older provided aac driver. The newer aac driver bundle from
Adaptec has the 64-bit binary so you just disable the old aac and install the
new one.

I suggest using the manufacturer's driver(s) and hardware - if directly
supported by them.
