desktop/keepassx failed to install, some dependency failed, all the others installed nicely. Thanks for the useful list. I'll try resolving the keepassx issue, and ask again if I can't. Hans J. Re: [OpenIndiana-discuss] Hipster distro contents confusion
I could try, but I'm currently heavily engaged in live sound recording, which is heavy work at the best of times. Once I get a hipster iso installed I could possibly write about whatever I learned from that, since that would be win-win. And any other similar experience. Beyond that kind of thing, whatever I were to do would always run the risk of being delayed, basically forever. torsdag 29 september 2016 skrev Adam Števko : > Hi, > > are you interested in contributing in any way (testing, writing docs, code > review, q&a..)? > > Cheers, > Adam > > > On 29 Sep 2016, at 10:56, Hans J Albertsson > wrote: > > > > Sunrays is the only inescapable use case, but I definitely prefer oi to > any > > of my other available choices for anything light enough to be handled in > > oi. > > > > Hans J. Re: [OpenIndiana-discuss] Hipster distro contents confusion
Hi, I wouldn't consider OpenIndiana beta or alpha. There are people outvthere using it for serious stuff. Back in the days, it had a lot of users on servers, esp. storages and servers. As things went, some people migrated to OmniOS/SmartOS or even Linux with ZoL or FreeBSD. illumos has very nice technologies and the integration between them is great experience, but not many people sre interested in. People are happy with "good enough" as Linux (that´s the reality). Also, certain areas of the system hasn't seen innovations since 2010. Rolling release model is great for developers / experienced users who are not afraid of dealing with problems (the model works basically the same ad on Archlinux). Will the ISOs contain an upgrade option?? Or is there some consolidation package magic to use the IPS server for that?? I intend to run Hipster in a new machine, no old data to backup. ___ openindiana-discuss mailing list openindiana-discuss@openindiana.org https://openindiana.org/mailman/listinfo/openindiana-discuss ___ openindiana-discuss mailing list openindiana-discuss@openindiana.org https://openindiana.org/mailman/listinfo/openindiana-discuss ___ openindiana-discuss mailing list openindiana-discuss@openindiana.org https://openindiana.org/mailman/listinfo/openindiana-discuss

The "unstable" definition of Hipster means that you can expect version bumps with occasional breakage: it does not mean that your system will collapse. This is a rather common misunderstanding of "stable". The base system being what you can expect from illumos, it is "stable" as in "not falling" apart. Some bugs may occasionally appear for Desktop components but I have the same and even more on my Debian stable (e.g minus the ones I fixed i oi-userland). The bottom line is: I have been running Hipster for my researchin the past 4 years. Now running MATE + Xorg 1.18.4 on 3 workstations (Intel and Nvidia graphics). Another thing: Hipster is what people make of it, so the more love it is given, the better it is e.g contributions to oi-userland are welcome. > > Are the live graphical ISOs reasonably complete, including most standard > toppings for the Hipster ice cream? Re: [OpenIndiana-discuss] Hipster distro contents confusion
Ok, so I install the iso, check what is missing and get the rest as you show. This machine is just a tryout for me. Wanna see if I can get SunRays, with Firefox, thunderbird and libreoffice going and then a serviio dlna server using ffmpeg for transcoding. Most other server bits here are on FreeNAS boxes. I'm not seriously expecting hipster to be super stable, but I can't imagine you folks putting all this effort in unless your experience occasionally includes reasonable usefulness. Hans J. On the desktop hipster is a "no crash stable beta". Re: [OpenIndiana-discuss] Hipster distro contents confusion
Hello, No. The official snapshot is the 2016.04 (i.e. BETA) release. The 2016.08 snapshot is an ALPHA (experimental) release - not an official snapshot. Read carefully, there are no STABLE releases of OI-Hipster. These are all 'developer snapshots' - and only tested within a limited scope. oi_151a track was maintained in a somewhat STABLE manner (slow moving track). ~K On Tuesday, September 27, 2016 12:03 AM, Hans J.
