The user-space portion is - the kernel side is in onnv (hence an upcoming
problem for openindiana, when the xnv side of the Intel driver starts
depending on newer ioctls in the kernel side than the illumos kernel supports,
at least until someone steps up to maintain the illumos DRI modules and update
them to the newest upstream from Linux [dual-licensed BSD/GPL]).

The radeonhd driver is still shipped at this moment, but is in the process of
being removed, since it's been abandoned upstream in favor of radeon. (At
the moment it's already removed in the project gate for the Xorg 1.9 integration
to Solaris 11.)

2010-12-26 Thread ken mays
Chris,

The "intel" 2.6.3 driver is a part of the Xnv driver packaging (so in the
default OI_148 packaging). Some people have reported issues with the current
intel driver in OI_147 - possibly OI_148 as well.

The "intel" driver performance is "good enough" for "basic 3D functionality"
for business graphics use. Compiz 0.8.4 works OK in advanced mode.

Again, the Nvidia commercial driver suite and GPUs are the official 'advanced'
3D solution at this time.

Hi Lou,

As for Solaris/OpenSolaris-based distros - like OI_148, consider current Xorg
radeon driver support as "2D" only.

Official support for 'advanced' 3D functionality on OpenSolaris-based distros
is in use of the Nvidia commercial driver and GPUs. Intel GPUs also are still
supported for 3D functionality.

Thanks for these clarifications re Radeon, btw...

So, in an abundance of over-clarification: For my HD 3870, I've been resigned
to using the vesa driver so far with this card; is this still the state of
play?

I do understand from others here that I shouldn't expect any 3D functionality
with this card, and that there's no way to use the card's processor to generate
the graphical desktop we might try to send out via VNC, or other virtual
desktop s'ware. Is all of this still true?

do you have a custom Xorg configuration?

what model Radeon are you using?

Is your monitor connected via the HDMI interface? when you tried
another monitor, did you connect it on the VGA/other interface(s)
before the computer booted?

Re: [OpenIndiana-discuss] IO_b148 on an ATI HD 5770: Xorg failure / black screen

2010-12-23 Thread Robin Axelsson
But there is nothing wrong with the monitor or the connection. I get the
BIOS post and I get the GRUB but as soon as Xorg initiates it goes
black. Xorg works not fine in build 134 (it yields a picture but not at
the resolution I want due to some limitations in the drivers) but it
works and has never shown any such symptoms. I have tried connecting
another monitor to the other outputs using a DVI->VGA adapter but there
is no signal in any of the outputs.

If that is it you might need to manually set a modeline for your usual monitor.

2010-12-23 Thread Jonathan Adams
do you have another monitor that you can try? a CRT might be a good
bet, if you can get one, and see if it's just sending out the wrong
refresh ...

If that is it you might need to manually set a modeline for your usual monitor.
