You installed the guest additions from Oracle, which are packaged in the older format. Until about the last 3 months, those were the only guest additions available for OI. Thanks to Michal, Alexander, and probably others, OI now has a package in IPS format for the guest additions, installable directly from the openindiana.org repo. If you decide to switch to the OI package for system/virtualbox/virtualbox-additions , be sure you uninstall the SVR4 format guest additions package first. On the OI window (on VirtualBox) there is a message: "The VirtualBox Guest Additions do not appear to be available on this machine, and shared folders cannot be used without them To use shared folders inside the virtual machine, please install the Guest..." What? What is the VirtualBox version on the host? What is the system/virtualbox/virtualbox-additions version in the OI guest? Did you updated (`pkg update -v`) OI after the installation? (You should.) And what's wrong with the command: "# mount -F vboxfs " specified in the VirtualBox manual? the response to this is: "mount: Operation not applicable to FSType vboxfs" I tested automounted shared folder on OI host/OI guest with system/virtualbox/virtualbox-additions and it worked. As root I can see content of the shared folder. Michal On Fri, 21 Jun 2019, Chris Game wrote: Part way to setting up sharing folder with OI guest on windows10 host. The old pkgadd command isn't available and pkg requires manipulating publishers and what not. Yeah, I wouldn't use the one from the virtual CD. Is there a package available in the standard OI repo that installs guest additions? Yup! On the OI guest: pfexec pkg install system/virtualbox/virtualbox-additions Or if not what is the recommended way to get this working? The ultimate aim is to get a sharing folder mounted in OI which is visible from the Windows host I'm doing the opposite: I have an OI hipster workstation that's the host, and a Windows 10 guest. I've been able to make the shared folder work just fine going that direction, so I suspect you'll have the same experience. Shared clipboard is also working well between the two. Only thing I miss right now is USB passthrough, but I haven't had enough cycles to even begin to look at that.
