I see a similar behaviour, but Ctrl-A (select all) or double click on word 
works. Attempt to select with mouse will only select the first letter of word 
if I start on it.
There are no messages on stdout of atril.

Interestingly, I have noticed that when I open a file generated by XeLaTeX

You have no problem but I do have problem with all PDF files I have tested(the 
creator is irrelevant). And this is exactly why I have asked whether thisis a 
bug and/or a feature or something peculiar in my system.

OK so it does not work with any PDF file you created then.
I generate mine with pdflatex bundled with TeXLive and have no issue.
I guess it would be good to understand the difference.

I have created the PDFs with XeLaTeX and there is no security,no anything. In 
fact, marking does not work with any PDF file.

Could it be specific to the PDF you are working on?
Check File -> Properties -> Security.

I just tried with a few PDFs without any problem.

I have noticed that it is almost impossible to mark text on a PDF file and copy 
it when using atril. The previousversion of atril did not show this problem. Is 
this afeature/bug or something I see only on my system?
