I have a Sun Ultra-40 with 2 dual-core AMD opteron's with 32gb of memory and a SAS controller. I also have a SunFire x4600 with 8 dual-core AMD opterons with 128gb of memory. Neither will run OpenIndiana Hipster with the FreeBSD loader, *BUT* will run Grub based Hipster, FreeBSD, TrueOS, Windows-7 and Linux. When I attempt to boot Hipster with the FreeBSD loader I get 8 lines of "WARNING illegal PCI OFFSET" (may be the exact wording) and the system hangs

What hardware do I need to run OpenIndiana 2017.10? How much RAM and
processor speed is needed?

Hi

Best is at least 1.5gb ram and a newer but not the newest processor.
The Problem is less that a maschine needs power to run OpenIndiana but
that we can not keep up with the latest drivers. I would go for an last
gen hardware.

I have it running on a HP Proliant Microserver Gen10 and I know that
Gen8 works well too.

Hope this helps
Till

I'd like to suggest looking for a used HP Z400 on eBay. They're Solaris
certified. I picked up 3 for $100 each with 6 GB of DRAM, quad core 2.9 GHz
Xeon and 160 GB disk earlier this year. I already had one I'd bought a few
years ago. I needed one, but got the others for spares. The build quality is
excellent. Runs Hipster 2017.10 just fine.

After a ridiculous amount of work I've finally gotten Windows 7 and Debian
working as guests under VirtualBox. Performance on Windows is not quite
adequate for running SDRuno with my SDRplay RSP2 (audio stutters) but otherwise
is fine with 8 GB of DRAM. I installed a 3 in 2 iStar trayless disk enclosure
and am running three 2 TB disks (s0 = 100 GB, s1=rest) using a 3 way mirrored
rpool in s0 and a RAIDZ1 pool in s1. I mostly use the RSP2 for spectrum
analysis, so not a big deal. And I still have not tried to optimize
performance. Too much to do.

Have Fun!
Reg

Really? I would think Gen 10 would be UEFI?
Does Hipster now support UEFI?

Another option is a HP Z420 (Xeon Sandy Bridge generation). They are
afforable nowadays on eBay.
I recommend to use a NVIDIA based graphics card. For an HP workstation
that should be a at least Quadro 600 or K600.
I have used OpenIndiana on my Z420 (with E5-1620V2) with a Quadro K2000
until recently.
The amount of needed RAM and processor speeds depends on what you want
to do with your computer. For any illumos based distro the lack of
drivers is a bigger problem especially if you
want to use it as a desktop computer.

Andreas

No but UEFI can still boot legacy MBR for one or two generations.
