Do you MEAN that OpenSolaris distro only thats short list ?

Yes - those are the known distributions. Not so bad for a 2-year
old project, IMO.

I guess you are comparing the number of distributions to what's
available on Linux. But the explosion of distros is a reasonably
new phenomenon even there. When Distrowatch was launched in
2001, it listed only 10 Linux distributions that had global
reach.

The BeleniX project needs no introductions. Most of the discussions

Why should a project like Indiana support a Sun internal project?

Please explain. That seems like a very inaccurate label.

Well, Belenix is a project run by a Sun employee. Do you believe it is
 not a Sun project?

Actually, no - it is not. I have been part of the initial
discussions when the project was being conceived, and so has
Eric. We could vouch for the fact that it was never a *Sun*

2007-05-13 Thread Venky
There was one bit of news from CommunityOne (i.e. the JavaOne pre-show)
that I thought might have interesting consequences for the OpenSolaris
community. That was the proposal to pay open source developers for
their work. That doesn't seem like a bad idea and I am wondering how
such a thing would affect the community here.

This might be a good idea, but previous experiments in the Linux
community have not been universally successful.

Disgruntled Debian developers delay Etch:

I propose a project on opensolaris.org for the creation of
country/language portals for the website. Having opensolaris.org talk in
a variety of languages is critical for engaging developers in non
English-speaking regions of the world. I will help lead the effort
initially, but I'm very much seeking additional leaders who have more
expertise than I have. Which shouldn't be difficult, actually. We've
been having some initial conversations for a couple of weeks internally
and on the Internationalization Localization Community discuss list:
 http://opensolaris.org/jive/thread.jspa?threadID=15327tstart=0

In short, the OpenSolaris website team will provide infrastructure
access to top level domains (jp.opensolaris.org, cn.opensolaris.org,
etc) for the purpose of translating the site, and the Country/Language
Portal Project will create and manage the process of who translates and
maintains the site via the various portals. There is already significant
interest from Japan, Korea, and India, so if you'd like to get involved
please stay tuned for our project opening. For more background, see the
thread above. The conversation there is ongoing, and your participation
 is most welcome.

I'm seeking seconds for the proposal, community participation in the
project, and an endorsement from the leaders of the Internationalization
Localization Community. I'd like to tie the project as closely to that
community as possible and use their lists as well. This only makes sense
since the community members on those lists have the most expertise and
interest in this area. So, for now, all we need is a project space.
We'll have conversations on i18n-discuss to get going, and when
individual portals are ready they can split off into existing lists
within that community. If we have to create new lists, we can certainly
do so when the need arises.

 That's it.

2006-02-15 Thread Venky
The problem I have with screen - and tabs in gnome-terminal -
is that I often end up needing to view windows simultaneously
 side-by-side.

It would be nice (RFE time...) if gnome-terminal allowed you to
promote a tab to a separate window. Then I could start out with
tabs and only make a window later if I needed to.

You could do this with screen. You can attach the same screen
session to multiple windows using the screen -x (multi-display)
mode and then switch to the screen you want in each display.

Another problem here is finding the right terminal. If I have multiple
sessions in a single window, how can I easily find which window they're
 in?

Yeah.. that's always a little painful. You can name screen
sessions using screen -S, so I normally tend to group related
windows into the same session and name the session (and the xterm
window) appropriately.

Re: [osol-discuss] Proposal: OpenSolaris Articles Project

2006-01-23 Thread Venky
That's really neat!

We could develop all kinds of community-wide content, including
feature articles, community profiles, technical articles,
commentaries, and QAs. Over time, the project could expand the
Articles page to include more multi-media content such as
  artwork, podcasts, screencasts, and videos.

I suppose we'd need a list. How about [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Yes as well as an index to the content. May I suggest a format that
is dirt simple to begin with and then migrate to some sort of content
 management system?

I totally agree. How about a simple Mediawiki installation with
global edit privileges? Something like this:
http://opensolaris.wikicities.com/

This proposed Articles Project would develop the necessary
processes for article generation and solicit contributors. We'd
have to decide what content is needed, who'd write/edit/produce
that content, how it would be reviewed for accuracy, in what form
it would be published, and where it would be published.

I'd think the best way would be to throw it open to everybody
without trying to setup a complex process on who'd be allowed to
write or edit the content. Wikipedia works on that principle and it
seems to work just fine.

I think that the first thing to get onto the site, somewhere, is
really simple HOWTO type docs for new users and new people in general.
