[Openstack] A Step-by-Step Guide to Deploying OpenStack on CentOS Using the KVM Hypervisor and GlusterFS Distributed File System

2012-08-17 Thread Anton Beloglazov
Hi All,

I and other people from the CLOUDS lab (http://www.cloudbus.org/) have just
completed writing a step-by-step guide to deploying OpenStack on multiple
nodes with CentOS 6.3 using KVM and GlusterFS based on our experience. Each
step is implemented as a separate shell script, which allows going slowly
to understand every installation step. I thought it might be useful for
some people; therefore, I'm announcing it in this mailing list.

The guide is available as a PDF:

I'd be interested to know what sort of performance you see with gluster

Re: [Openstack] A Step-by-Step Guide to Deploying OpenStack on CentOS Using the KVM Hypervisor and GlusterFS Distributed File System

2012-08-17 Thread David Busby
Hi Anton,

For a strait gluster vs native; sysbench (
http://sysbench.sourceforge.net/docs/#fileio_mode also available from epel
for el6 http://koji.fedoraproject.org/koji/buildinfo?buildID=262308) may
be able to show some insight into guest I/O performance; over an extended
period of time.

Potentially you could then look at concurrency by running sysbench on
multiple guests to gauge degradation of performance due to concurrent I/O
across nodes (if any exists), here I'd be particularly curious if high I/O
on one compute node, due to replication caused a performance hit on
another node.

Regards

David

[Openstack] Essex installation problem, vm/chroot, Ubuntu 10.04

2012-08-17 Thread Tero A Kauppinen

Hi all

We are trying to setup a puppet script to install Essex on a VM running
Ubuntu 10.04. The purpose is also setup the installation in a chroot
environment on that VM. Currently the start up process fails to the
following error:

glance.common.exception.ImportFailure: Failed to import requested
object/class: 'glance.registry.api.v1.API'. Reason: cannot import name
Random

Further digging reveals an interesting detail: on the host machine
(Ubuntu 12.04):

 dpkg -L python-crypto
(snip)
/usr/lib/python2.7/dist-packages/Crypto/Random/random.py

whereas in the chroot environment installation no such class is
available in 'python-crypto'.

Do I need to manually upgrade the package? If yes, any recommendations
to which version (i.e. link)?

Thanks,
Tero

This is a pretty antiquated presentation. Plenty of stuff has changed in

an idea that the origins of OpenStack were built with security in mind.
When at NASA we had some pretty good security and policy guys
contributing heavily to the sprint planning sessions we had. The result
was a code base that was fairly flexible when it came to adjusting
itself to meet policy requirements.

Hi Anton,

really interesting stuff. We are also in very early stages in a research
project to automate VM consolidation.

Most of the studies focus on information taken from power supplies and
physical devices. We are more interested in looking for patterns of
applications usage (database hits, IOPs, files used...)

What inputs are you using in your algorithms?

[Openstack] nova-volume HA

2012-08-17 Thread Razique Mahroua
Hu guys, working on the new implementation of nova-volume inside my cloud, I'm trying to avoid the implementation I had during a year, the "classical" approach, consisting in creating a VG on a partition, that last being on a SAN.Here are few new implementations I was thinking about	•1 - Install on every compute-node nova-volume, meaning reducing risks to break the instance which uses a volume in case the network cuts down (power outage, network failure, bug) - that wouldn't guarantee full HA but would reduce the risks proportionally to the number of nodes. In such setup is it possible to specify for a node to use it's own volumes for the instances running on it ?	• 2 - Use a shared storage (MooseFS in my case) for storing the VG as a file, meaning only one big file shared across the compute-nodes. Does that sound realistic ?	• 3 Install CLVM and using maybe CARP for a failover between serveral VG (as files) - but keep the exposition from the controller -that wouldn't prevent though instance to have erratic behaviors in case of network lossWhat is the implementation you consider the safest so far ?Best regards,Razique

Re: [Openstack] 回复: 回复: Openstack Folsom 2 or 3

2012-08-17 Thread Anne Gentle
The FAQ [1] covers this scenario (installing a specific release with
DevStack) for a stable branch. I think this is how you install with
milestone-proposed branch. However not all projects have a
milestone-proposed branch yet.

Open and edit localrc, then run stack.sh. Swift is on its own release
schedule so pick a tag in the Swift repo that is just before the
milestone release. For example:

GLANCE_BRANCH=milestone-proposed (doesn't exist)
HORIZON_BRANCH=milestone-proposed (doesn't exist)
KEYSTONE_BRANCH=milestone-proposed
NOVA_BRANCH=milestone-proposed
QUANTUM_BRANCH=milestone-proposed (doesn't exist)
SWIFT_BRANCH=1.6.0 (guessing as it's the just before the
milestone release release)

Can anyone confirm?
Thanks,
Anne

[Openstack] Folsom-3 development milestone for Keystone, Glance, Nova, Horizon, Quantum and Cinder

2012-08-17 Thread Thierry Carrez
Hi everyone,

The third and last development milestone of the Folsom cycle is now
available for Keystone, Glance, Nova, Horizon, Quantum and Cinder ! It
contains almost all features that will appear in the final release of
Folsom, scheduled for September 27th.

You can see the full list of new features and fixed bugs, as well as
tarball downloads, at:

https://launchpad.net/keystone/folsom/folsom-3
https://launchpad.net/glance/folsom/folsom-3
https://launchpad.net/nova/folsom/folsom-3
https://launchpad.net/horizon/folsom/folsom-3
https://launchpad.net/quantum/folsom/folsom-3
https://launchpad.net/cinder/folsom/folsom-3

We are now entering the feature-frozen, bugfixing time before we can
produce our release candidates. Please test, try the new features,
report bugs, help fix them. Let's all make Folsom another great
OpenStack release.

Cheers!

[Openstack] experimenting with ceilometer via devstack

2012-08-17 Thread Doug Hellmann
John Tran 's patch just landed in devstack to enable ceilometer support.
Thanks, John!

To turn on ceilometer, add this line to your localrc before running
devstack:

enable_service ceilometer-acompute,ceilometer-acentral,
ceilometer-collector

The default configuration results in a MongoDB database called ceilometer
containing all of the metering data. You can access it directly using the
mongo shell via the command mongo ceilometer.

The ceilometer API server does not have a wrapper script, but you can start
the dev server by running

python -m ceilometer.api

The server will listen for requests on port 9000 by default.

[Openstack] [Docs] It's that time of the release!

2012-08-17 Thread Anne Gentle
Hi all -
Now that we're in feature freeze period, it's a great time to look at
what docs are needed for Folsom. You can help with documentation in
several ways. Here are some ideas.

_Review docs_
Go to review.openstack.org and review open patches on
openstack-manuals. Daily, hourly, weekly, any cadence will help. We
should be approving lots of changes quickly and patching patches to
get as much truth out there as we can. [1]

_Write API docs and samples_
There are several doc bugs opened to enhance Compute API docs:
Reboot, soft reboot: https://bugs.launchpad.net/openstack-manuals/+bug/1017543
os-quotas admin extension:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/openstack-manuals/+bug/1029567
os-aggregates missing info:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/openstack-manuals/+bug/1015821
Pause, suspend missing info:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/openstack-manuals/+bug/1029560
server_diagnostics undocumented:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/openstack-manuals/+bug/1035483
deferred_delete undocumented:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/openstack-manuals/+bug/1035484
missing server_id in metadata call:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/openstack-manuals/+bug/1035491
migration missing information:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/openstack-manuals/+bug/1022653

_Write API tests for samples_
Vish has a patchset for a templatized test integration for API
samples, please help:
https://review.openstack.org/#/c/11263/

_New landing pages_
I've proposed a partial patch to update the landing pages, please
review and enhance as you see fit.
https://review.openstack.org/#/c/11232/

_Work on a Comprehensive CLI guide_
Starting point is here: https://review.openstack.org/#/c/11274/

_Make migration better to document_
One bug in particular points out how hard it is to understand live
migration and migration. [2] Please review
https://review.openstack.org/#/c/11172/ and analyze whether a name
change would help? Not sure if it's in the realm of FFE but even good
docs can't help much when the command is a misnomer.

_Work on an Operations Manual_
See [3] for the blueprint and an outline. We've been discussing on the
openstack-doc list too. [4]

_Fix doc bugs_
See [5] for the list of doc bugs, assign yourself, propose a patch,
change the world. Do it again.

If a team is interested in a doc sprint day, I'd be happy to organize,
recruit, and write. Let me know.

PTLs, I believe I've been in touch with all of you for your doc plan
for the release, but definitely reach out for clarity!

Thanks,
Anne

Re: [Openstack] Snapshotting ephemeral disks?

2012-08-17 Thread Lars Kellogg-Stedman
This is not possible. Sounds like you really want a fix for this bug:

 https://bugs.launchpad.net/nova/+bug/914484

The fix was reverted but hopefully it can be cleaned up and come back in.

That looks like it would get us where we want to be. My main goal is
to have a relatively easy process for someone without administrative
access to the host to...

- Uploading an ISO image.
- Boot an instance from that image.
- Install an OS onto something.
- Transform something from the previous step into a deployable
  image.

Allowing images booted from an ISO to have an attached, snapshottable
root drive would certainly work.

[Openstack] keystone initialization problem

2012-08-17 Thread Xin Zhao

Hello,

I newly install keystone on the RHEL6 machine, but it is not working.
The following command fails:

$ keystone --token admin_token string from keystone.conf --endpoint
http://internet_ip of the controller node:35357/v2.0 tenant-create
--name openstackDemo --description Default Tenant --enabled true

Unable to communicate with identity service: (403, 'Forbidden'). (HTTP 400)

There is no relevant log in the keystone.log file.

Here is the instruction I follow:
http://docs.openstack.org/essex/openstack-compute/install/yum/content/setting-up-tenants-users-and-roles.html

This is done on the controller node itself. I can telnet to internet_ip
of the controller node:35357. I can also
log into mysql DB as keystone user, although there is no admin_token
entry in any of the keystone tables.

Any idea what is going wrong here?

Thanks,
Xin

[Openstack] Question about Flat DHCP networking

2012-08-17 Thread Eugene Kirpichov
Hi,

The documentation
http://docs.openstack.org/diablo/openstack-compute/admin/content/configuring-flat-dhcp-networking.html
has the passage: The nova-network service will track leases and
releases in the database so it knows if a VM instance has stopped
properly configuring via DHCP

Can someone briefly explain me what this means, if possible with rough
pointers to code?
I don't recall nova noticing when my VM actually stopped properly
configuring via DHCP.

Re: [Openstack] keystone initialization problem

2012-08-17 Thread Adam Young

OK, SERVICE_TOKEN is the same as --token

You can follow the steps here:

https://access.redhat.com/knowledge/docs/en-US/Red_Hat_OpenStack_Preview/

Specifically:
https://access.redhat.com/knowledge/docs/en-US/Red_Hat_OpenStack_Preview/1/html/Getting_Started_Guide/ch02.html#id3165390
||  *|export SERVICE_TOKEN=$(openssl rand -hex 10)|*
||  *|export SERVICE_ENDPOINT=http://127.0.0.1:35357/v2.0|*
||  *|echo $SERVICE_TOKEN  /tmp/ks_admin_token|*
||  *|sudo openstack-config --set /etc/keystone/keystone.conf \|*
  *|DEFAULT admin_token $SERVICE_TOKEN|*

and that should be the admin_token value that you have.

If nothing is in the log, it probably means you have not actually hit
the right server.

On 08/17/2012 05:47 PM, Dolph Mathews wrote:
The admin_token value from keystone.conf is not a real token; it

As for your actual issue, I don't see anything obviously wrong with
what's below. Is logging enabled working, otherwise? Have you tried
verbose = True and debug = True? Have you tried running that
command from the compute node itself, rather than over the internet
IP? What happens when you curl / GET / whatever http://internet_ip of
the controller node:35357/v2.0 and/or http://127.0.0.1:35357/v2.0 ?
