Hmm,

This had actually been failing for quite some time - probably mid August :)

Can we get emailed on build failure or some such?

[Openstack] OpenStack technical committee question

2012-09-16 Thread Colin McNamara
I have a question regarding eligibility for voting / submitting for candidacy
for a technical committee.

The following state the requirements for voting / submitting candidacy

they have contributed at least one change to one of the official OpenStack
projects[3] (over which the TC has final authority) in the year preceding 23:59
PST, August 29, 2012; and
they are an individual member of the Foundation by 23:59 PST, September 13,
2012.

I would like to participate, however my commit date is the 27th, and submit
date is the 30th. Am I eligible?

Warning - I'm a biased party since I work on OpenShift, but I couldn't
resist...

Another good option to consider is OpenShift. OpenShift [1] has also
been designed from the ground up around an extensible 'cartridge' model
[2] that allows any software to be integrated and managed by the
platform. OpenShift's dependencies are also isolated to the operating
system which allow it to work on any IaaS solution like OpenStack. We
think the combination of secure multi-tenancy that OpenShift provides in
conjunction with private cloud capabilities that OpenStack provides is
really powerful. If you want to see something up and running quickly,
you can check out what the Heat API guys have done with OpenStack +
OpenShift [3].

In terms of PaaS 'API' standardization, I think the industry is a ways
out from that. While higher level PaaS API's might seem to provide
portability, many lower level details still are exposed that the
applications are forced to deal with. Those include things like
application runtimes, storage, operating system versions and isolation
techniques.

That said, our goal is to build strong standards in this space over
time. We are involved in several industry PaaS standards but they are
still a ways out from being finalized [4][5]. Also, consider how fast
the multi-tenancy technologies themselves are evolving in the operating
system (e.g. kernel namespaces, linux control groups, selinux sandboxes)
in addition to the ways to utilize them (e.g. lxc). Given that pace, it
feels a little early to make long term decisions about where to draw the
line between a virtual machine and a linux container. Knowing how to
leverage 'containers' is critical enough for a PaaS that I believe we'll
have to have more standardization at that layer before we see the PaaS
evolution slow down.

In the meantime though, we're going to keep hacking on OpenShift and
OpenStack, so if there is anything you'd like to see, just let us know! [6]

Atleast we should have continued with ZONES until CELLS were part of

on this.

Can we try with the patch listed below. Only one concern with patches are
we dont get much help from stack users/testers..

This is very disappointing. I was looking forward to cells as well.

When was this decided and was the decision announced somewhere else? I'd

 The patch is here:

 https://review.openstack.org/#/c/10707/

It was proposed for inclusion on August 2nd, which was just a couple of
weeks before the feature freeze. There were enough significant things
that came up in discussion that it just wasn't going to make it in for
Folsom. In addition to working through the technical details, it also
desperately needs some documentation (ideally both architectural, as
well as how to use it).

It seems like we should be able to get this all wrapped up for Grizzly,
 though.

Re: [Openstack] strange problem when reboot nova-compute node: domain not found: no domain with matching name

2012-09-16 Thread romi zhang
Ritesh,

I did a test:

I downloaded a qcow2 format ubuntu
12.04(http://docs.openstack.org/essex/openstack-compute/admin/content/starti
ng-images.html) and use it create a new instance.

Everything is fine,no any error information occurred.

But when I reboot compute node, the situation was same, and after run virsh
define again then to restart nova-compute, in the ubuntu12.04 instance
booting, it also gives out:

libvir: QEMU error : Domain not found: no domain with matching name
'instance-000c'

but finally, instance: 7f2050b7-b83b-4603-b7c2-3a6912188e9c] Instance
rebooted successfully, means this instance run normally and I also could ssh
it, same like others before.

So, it looks like no relation about images. I think perhaps something in
libvirt or qemu perhaps had potential problems.

The situation is:

If I only create one instance from ubuntu12.04 and run it in the first one,
anything run well, have no libvirt:QEMU error,.. Information comes out;

If I continue to boot instance from the centos(image created by me) or
fedora(downloaded from
http://docs.openstack.org/essex/openstack-compute/admin/content/starting-ima
ges.html) or windows image,it show me:

libvirt:QEMU error, domain not found...,but instance would finally spawn
successfully and run well.

It looks like libvirt:QEMU error, domain not found,. does not stop instance
running and working.

But, I did not know why reboot nova-compute node, /etc/libvirt/qemu would
delete the one of instances XML file and nova-compute would stop to
continue.

Ritesh,

I will try your method.

In the past, when I boot a new instance from a ubuntu image,it works ok.
Centos and windows image was created by me according docs.openstack.org
information, and every time when a new instance created from centos and
windows, system always told me Libvirt: QEMU error: Domain not found: no
domain with matching name,..., but finally, the instance works well.

So, I am not clear about the reason.

Thanks.

Hello romi,

Image got into a stuck state , only solution is to hack your database
for this particular instance and mark it as deleted, den restart nova-*

Then I found:

#ls /var/lib/nova/instances

_base instance-000a instance-000b instance-000c

#ls /etc/libvirt/qemu

instance-000b.xml instance-000c.xml Network

So:

/var/lib/nova/instances/instance-000a# virsh define libvirt.xml

Domain instance-000a defined from libvirt.xml

And:

#ls /etc/libvirt/qemu

Instance-000a.xml instance-000b.xml instance-000c.xml network

Then I restart: nova-compute , and nova-compute could normally started.

I did not understand why reboot compute node, and usually the first

By the way, when I create a new instance, the first line in the log also is

Anyone who had met such a problem and why?

in case you can also go to your instances directory and un a $ virsh define

Can you post your nova.conf please ?

 Warning - I'm a biased party since I work on OpenShift, but I couldn't
 resist...

Another good option to consider is OpenShift. OpenShift [1] has also been
designed from the ground up around an extensible 'cartridge' model [2] that
allows any software to be integrated and managed by the platform.
OpenShift's dependencies are also isolated to the operating system which
allow it to work on any IaaS solution like OpenStack. We think the
combination of secure multi-tenancy that OpenShift provides in conjunction
with private cloud capabilities that OpenStack provides is really powerful.
If you want to see something up and running quickly, you can check out what
the Heat API guys have done with OpenStack + OpenShift [3].

In terms of PaaS 'API' standardization, I think the industry is a ways out
from that. While higher level PaaS API's might seem to provide portability,
many lower level details still are exposed that the applications are forced
to deal with. Those include things like application runtimes, storage,
operating system versions and isolation techniques.

That said, our goal is to build strong standards in this space over time.
We are involved in several industry PaaS standards but they are still a ways
out from being finalized [4][5]. Also, consider how fast the multi-tenancy
technologies themselves are evolving in the operating system (e.g. kernel
namespaces, linux control groups, selinux sandboxes) in addition to the ways
to utilize them (e.g. lxc). Given that pace, it feels a little early to
make long term decisions about where to draw the line between a virtual
machine and a linux container. Knowing how to leverage 'containers' is
critical enough for a PaaS that I believe we'll have to have more
standardization at that layer before we see the PaaS evolution slow down.

In the meantime though, we're going to keep hacking on OpenShift and
OpenStack, so if there is anything you'd like to see, just let us know! [6]

Re: [Openstack] Cells Status

2012-09-16 Thread Sam Morrison
We have been using this patch in testing for a few months now. It works pretty
well with launching instances etc.
It is feature incomplete at the moment though.

We have developed syncing of security groups and private keys down do child
cells. Also done the live migration add ons for cells.

It would be good to get this in master as soon as Folsom gets branched off as
we'd like to contribute these back.

Cheers,
Sam

 The patch is here:

 https://review.openstack.org/#/c/10707/

It was proposed for inclusion on August 2nd, which was just a couple of
weeks before the feature freeze. There were enough significant things
that came up in discussion that it just wasn't going to make it in for
Folsom. In addition to working through the technical details, it also
desperately needs some documentation (ideally both architectural, as
well as how to use it).

It seems like we should be able to get this all wrapped up for Grizzly,
 though.

Centos and windows image was created by me according docs.openstack.org
information, and every time when a new instance created from centos and
windows, system always told me Libvirt: QEMU error: Domain not found: no
domain with matching name,..., but finally, the instance works well.

So, I am not clear about the reason.

Thanks.

Now I'm not well-versed in the legalese of all the distros, but that sounds
like splitting hairs on the meaning of compiled from source. If I run it
through LESS and commit the file to the repo does that make it from source?
It'd solve your problem exactly the same.

I'd be curious to know the definition here, but that seems like overkill to me.
If its what you need I'll do it for Folsom, but... thoughts?

Either way works, you just have to compile the file once and ship it in
 the distro package.

For at least Debian, this would make the package
non-free. Everything has to be compiled from source.

If you can't compile it yourself then you could perhaps use the one from
Adam/Ubuntu, or I can do it and send you the final output file.

That isn't the way.

   Hi,

currently, I'm trying to package horizon RC1 for Fedora.

Since, Fedora does not have node.js included, and also doesn't have
LESS included, it won't work per default.

Do you have suggestions for me?
   Thanks

We faced the same issue in Ubuntu [1].   Ended up compiling and
compressing the CSS and JS at packaging time, shipping those + the
manifest.json with the package and enabling COMPRESS_OFFLINE=True by
default.   Users who might want to make use of lessc and node later can
just install node-less and set COMPRESS_OFFLINE=False.

Re: [Openstack] paas in openstack and forked cloudfoindry

2012-09-16 Thread Frans Thamura
thx for the reply ;)

and your bahasa posting also in my twit and in this mailing list

yes,

after researching cloudfoundry for years, i tought chris richardson
mentioned it far before acquired by Spring, and far before spring become
part of vmware.

and far before openstack ;).. CMIIW i tought in 2007.

and start that, and try to promote openstack (with become chapter for
indonesia)

the work more exciting..

and esp after my friend show stackato, and post appfog plus piston in this
mailinglist

my research getting deep, and find the fork become interesting but bad.. :)
because to many option,

my background mostly from Java world, we know a lot of Java API in the
world, and we make standard like JAX-RS, JPA, JavaEE, JavaSE

i try to map this experience with what people do in Cloud, esp in both
world OpenStack and CloudFoundry , which i interest both.

openstack is clear :)..

but cloudfoundry esp the fork, make me need more feedback from both world,
openstack and cloudfoundry.

i love to bring the cloudfoundry brand to the market, and make new people
like me, have a strict clear direction, and i feel CF like new JavaEE for
Cloud but no JCP (the standard body in Java)

NB: I also discuss with VMware Country Manager about this Andreas Kagawa, a
long discussion happen from last Country Manager of Indonesia.

I'm not sure what your question is: my perspective on Cloud Foundry and
OpenStack has not changed since last year: let a thousand clouds bloom!

John from AppFog and Diane from ActiveState expressed really well how
Cloud Foundry helps them address their customer's requirements, and what
value there is in having a common ecosystem around that codebase.

Thanks to PistonCloud's BOSH OpenStack CPI
 https://github.com/piston/openstack-bosh-cpi, Cloud Foundry and OpenStack
are now like peanut butter and jelly, letting developers build a private or
public PaaS based 100% on open source software.

I find the the hybrid cloud possibilities opened up by standardizing on
the Cloud Foundry APIs that John outlines in his mail, and that AppFog
implements today super promising, and expect a lot of innovation in that
space in the next few years.

Listing Cloud Foundry forks and what developers are doing with it to solve
their specific needs will be a fun project: I hear about a lot of
innovation where developers fork specific parts of it to add value or solve
 a specific problem.

What Rakuten did with Fluentd to persist logs is a good example

 https://groups.google.com/a/cloudfoundry.org/forum/?fromgroups=#!searchin/vcap-dev/fluentd/vcap-dev/pXFkthOwAqg/ZZRsUZQ7_9QJ
The stackato-router that ActiveState announced last week, with websocket
 and soon SPDY support
 http://www.activestate.com/blog/2012/09/rocking-it-stackato-and-websocketsis
another great example of the kind of innovation that a bazaar style open
 source project can generate.

I'd recommend subscribing to the vcap-dev mailing list, where a lot of the
 action around the codebase is.

Last, on the community side, I saw that you created a cloudfoundry-id
 group: Terima kasih for that!
 https://groups.google.com/forum/?hl=enfromgroups#!forum/cloudfoundry-id

Although my Bahasa is very limited, I applied to the group and will rely
on Google Translate to understand what people are posting about and try
 answering in english.
Our team organized events in China last year, in India this year, I hope
we'll do something in SE Asia in 2013: I'll keep you in the loop when we
 organize it.

I'd like to conclude on a Bob Dylan, quote, from The Times They Are
A-Changin', that I think applies very well to the current move from IaaS
 to PaaS.

 Come gather 'round people
 Wherever you roam
 And admit that the waters
 Around you have grown
 And accept it that soon
You'll be drenched to the bone
 If your time to you
 Is worth savin'
 Then you better start swimmin'
Or you'll sink like a stone
For the times they are a-changin'.

The waters of complexity are rising, so you better start swimmin' to a
higher level of abstraction that PaaS provides you:-)

still waiting Patrick Chanezone comment about this, because he is

 API.
We have implemented CF on a variety of public infrastructures (RAX

standardized private/on-prem cloud solutions (OpenStack based from
Rackspace, Piston, Red Hat etc.; AWS compatible from Eucalyptus, etc.).
  With

For instance, AppFog not only supports Infrastructure Clouds as
 application

made possible through our partnership with Microsoft by building a Cloud
Foundry API that translates to the native Windows Azure platform
 services.
Going forward we believe that this will become more commonplace, and that
the CF API will, in fact, be the defacto PaaS API.

Huge opportunities open for cloud providers, IT departments,
