 Hi,

I did Openstack(Folsom+Quantum) setup, with one controller node ( also
running networking services) and 8 compute nodes. Both controller node and
compute nodes have 2 NIC each, one on public network (internet) and one on
 private network.

My requirement is that for each tenant, every VM should be connected to
private network as well as it should also have public IP address, so that
user can directly access that machine over internet. I might add some more
compute node as well, and my VM counts can grow in range of 200-300+. You
can assume that we do have these many public IP's available.

My plan is to create vlan based private network for each tenant, but i am
confused on the public network part of it. Shell i use provider network or
use router/floating ip based networking. I want to user openvswtich (vlan)
 plugin for networking.Any suggestions?

 Thanks
 Anil

Re: [Openstack] Allocating dynamic IP to the VMs

2013-03-19 Thread Sylvain Bauza
In that case, please refer to my previous e-mail : use floating IPs
bound to the same physical network.
That's up to you to know which IP pools are available inside your
network. Once you get one, create a external Quantum subnet defined with
this IP range.

Sorry, I have feeling to explain again and again. If you still don't
catch the point, could you please then tell me your physical net/CIDR,
your free IP range and your gateway, and I'll mix you up the command to
issue.

[Openstack] [Networking/DNS] Proposal to make Moniker the default for DNS

2013-03-19 Thread Endre Karlson
Hi, I would like to propose Moniker as the default for DNS going forwards.

We where picked in a vote by several interested people to be the default
DNS implementation last year out of the available projects.

The current state of the project is:
* Several DNSaaS is built on Moniker - HP Cloud's for one.
* Support for multiple record types A, , SPF, CNAME, NS, MX,
configurable TTLs.
* Pluggable storage layer - currently only SQLAlchemy.
* Pluggable DNS backends that can either be run in a Central process or in
agents on seperate servers for redundancy
  - Bind9, Bind9 with MySQL, PowerDNS, DNSMasq
* Pluggable notification handling - Support for Quantum and Nova via MQ
notifications.
* REST API using Flask and JSONSchema.
* python-monikerclient for bindings / cli.

It has nothing to do with the image format and everything to do with
(as you found) the command line options baked into the image. Plus
the grub configuration if you are using and expect to see the grub
menu.

My normal tactic is to:
* add this to the kernel command line (usually in Fedora kickstart files):
  console=tty console=ttyS0
* set in /etc/default/grub:
  GRUB_TERMINAL=console
  GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX=console=ttyS0 console=tty
  GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=console=ttyS0

I am able to make this work in Folsom with the same raw image, so not sure
what this error is about in Devstack. Any help is appreciated!

Re: [Openstack] Openstack Metadata Service

2013-03-19 Thread bruno sendas
Hi,

I had tried every sollution posted on the openstack archives and it simply
wouldn't work.
Until I had the wrong idea and installed the nova-api-metadata on the
controller node and it removed the nova-api, which corrupted the openstack
deployment. So when I re-installed all the nova components (the
nova-api-metadata was removed), one reboot later and the metadata server
was running. :)))

Also, I added a route to the Private Network ( for the VM) using the router
external gateway.

The problem must have been from a bad installation of nova-api int the
controller node.

best regards,
Bruno

I think this should solve the metadata issue, but there is one more issue,
the instances do not seem to get IP address and also it is not so clear
weather to use L2 with L3.

 Hi all,

The first issue is that the Basic Install guide doesn't tell the user to
install the nova-api-metadata service. But there's more to it than just
that, I believe. Two doc comments have noted that there's a routing issue
 as well:

there seems to be a step left out of this guide on the controller setup
...once you create the tenant subnets you need to add the route from the
internal ips in this case route add -n 10.5.5.0/24 gw (the external
router project IP ) once i did this on the controller node it pulls the
 metadata perfectly

Does this routing sound like the solution in your cases?

 Yes. This is correct.

AFAIK in Essex, the metadata service was pointed out through iptables. So
there was a rule that DNAT the metadata service to the CC machine.

I had this metadata problem too, but I couldn't find out a proper solution.
My guess is that this problem is related to the Gateway/Router in
Folsom+Quantum installation. Or maybe in the metadata_host in the
 nova.conf file.

I hope someone could clarify this things for us.

 Hi,

We have deployed OpenStack using the guide provided at the OpenStack

Everything went fine during the installation process, but when we try to
instantiate a VM, the logs show that the VMs are unable to connect to the
 metadata service (169.254.169.254).

We've tried this with the Ubuntu image and the Cirros image, but the
 result
 is the same.

From what I understood, without the retrieval of the metadata from the
server, the keys are not downloaded to the VM, is this correct?

Because we can ping the IP address assigned to the VM from the network
 node,
and if we assign a floating IP to the VM, the public IP also responds to
 ping replys.

But we are unable to ssh into the VMs, with the error: Read from socket
 failed: Connection reset by peer

If we try to telnet into the public IP this is the result:

 controller@controller:~$ telnet x.x.x.x 22

 Trying x.x.x.x...

 Connected to x.x.x.x.

 Escape character is '^]'.

 SSH-2.0-OpenSSH_5.9p1 Debian-5ubuntu1

 Protocol mismatch.

 Connection closed by foreign host.

 Questions:

In which node is the metadata service supposed to be running (compute,
 network or controller)?

Should the IP address 169.254.169.254 be reachable outside the VM?

Is there an alternative to the metadata service?

 Kind regards,

 Bruno Parreira

[Openstack] One Openstack attached to many existing networks?

2013-03-19 Thread Markku Tavasti

Hi!

We are trying to create setup where one opestack cluster is connected to
many existing networks. Networks are each assigned to some specific
customer, and every network can have different ip range available.

For example;
 * cust1 has network 10.26.3.0/24, and has available ip's on
10.26.3.144 - 10.26.3.151 ( /29 mask)
 * cust2 has network 10.35.168.0/24 and has available ip's on
10.35.168.128 - 10.35.168.192

I've tried to setup this environment wit nova-network, but with not too
much success.

Tried something like:

nova-manage network create --label TUNK --fixed_range_v4=10.26.3.0/24
--vlan=1506 --multi_host='T' --dns1=10.131.38.201 --dns2=10.231.52.2
--gateway=10.26.3.1 --fixed_cidr=10.26.3.144/29 --num_networks=1
--network_size=8

I've tried many different combinations, but haven't still got setup where:
 * network is /24
 * there is network_size 8
 * fixed ip's start from .144

Preferably we would put virtual machines directly to that network, but
if that is not possible, then even floating ip's on every network is ok.

What you think, is this even possible with nova-network? And what about
quantum?

When creating a floating IP pool, Quantum does require

 - the external gateway

So, based on what I previously said, you only need to
create a 192.168.1.0/24 http://192.168.1.0/24 in
Quantum with .1-.100 (for example) as the range, .254

Re: [Openstack] VM guest can't access outside world.

2013-03-19 Thread David Kang

I also have the same problem with Quantum.
I don't know how to resolve it.
But I saw the following in
http://docs.openstack.org/trunk/openstack-network/admin/content/connectivity.html.

External network. Used to provide VMs with Internet access in some deployment
scenarios. The IP addresses on this network should be reachable by anyone on
the Internet.

It looks like that Quantum assumes Network Node should have public IP
address (not 10.x.x.x address).
If Network Node has a public IP address, the routing is done once between a
private network and a public network
on the Network Node before a packet reaches public network.
But if Network Node has again in a private network, then a packet from a VM
should go through
two private network to reach public network.
It looks like that Quantum does not handle this multiple private network case.

 Does anybody have any idea/answer/correction?
I cannot put Network Node in public network.
I hope someone can have a solution to this problem.

 Thanks,
 David

 Hi Jeff,
Thanks for looking into this but the masquerade still not working. I
 have more
information and hope you will be able to help.

I have a single bare metal with everything installed ( Nova-compute,
 network
 node, controller, etc... )

There four NIC on that box
NIC em1 connect to external network with IP 10.38.5.251
NIC em3 connect to internal network with no IP configured
 em2 and em4 are disabled

After everything is configured ( adding router, net, sub-net ,etc.. )
 and
running, I run ifconfig and found out em1's has no more ip but a
 bridge has
 created

 inet addr:10.38.15.251 Bcast:10.38.255.255 Mask:255.255.0.0

 em1 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:21:9B:95:99:7A
UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1

I think this is how the quantum/linuxbridge work.

 I also create a floatingIP range ( 10.38.17.1-254 ). Then I saw a
 virtual NIC
is created with IP 10.38.17.1 which I believe is the router IP for the
 NAT

 qg-0503ddc6-1d Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 8E:57:D6:DA:2B:AA

Now I run tcpdump on the openstack box ( ie 10.38.5.251 ) and the
 target machine
 ( 10.38.1.2 ). Then ping 10.38.1.2 from my VM ( 192.168.151.4 ). I saw
 the
packet did arrive to 10.38.1.2 but with ip address 192.168.151.4. I
 supposed to
 see 10.38.17.1 right?

Re: [Openstack] [Networking/DNS] Proposal to make Moniker the default for DNS

Hi, I would like to propose Moniker as the default for DNS going

We where picked in a vote by several interested people to be the
default DNS implementation last year out of the available projects.

The current state of the project is:
* Several DNSaaS is built on Moniker - HP Cloud's for one.
* Support for multiple record types A, , SPF, CNAME, NS, MX,
configurable TTLs.

* Pluggable storage layer - currently only SQLAlchemy.
* Pluggable DNS backends that can either be run in a Central process
or in agents on seperate servers for redundancy

  - Bind9, Bind9 with MySQL, PowerDNS, DNSMasq
* Pluggable notification handling - Support for Quantum and Nova via
MQ notifications.

* REST API using Flask and JSONSchema.
* python-monikerclient for bindings / cli.

Recommend applying for incubation. An example request:

After disabling namespaces, with:

`allow_overlapping_ips = False' in quantum.conf

and with:

`use_namespaces = False' in /etc/quantum/dhcp_agent.ini

The previous error message dissapear but, My Instance isn't getting its IP
via DHCP now... Weird thing is that it was working couple minutes ago,
without disabling namespaces explicitly...

If I add the Instance IP by hand, I can reach the Internet / gateway from
it.

I'm finishing my Grizzly Quantum Single Flat PoC environment, planning to
publish a nice guide soon!

 I appreciate any help!

I'll use Quantum Single Flat network, since it is working with my Folsom

Re: [Openstack] Grizzly G3+RC1 - Quantum DHCP problem...

2013-03-19 Thread Martinx - ジェームズ
Hi!

I just rollback to the default namespace options, my Instance now get its
IP without problem.

But, the message from my first e-mail on this thread, still persist...

I tried to enable quantum metadata proxy stuff but, nothing changes...

The following error keeps rolling at my /var/log/quantum/dhcp-agent.log:

I tried everything I could... But this message persist...

 The namespaces are enabled, look:

 What can I do?

What is the protocol of your sql connection string in keystone.conf?
mysql+mysqldb:// ? If so, try changing it to just mysql:// which I think
will match what python-mysql installs.

[Openstack] nova-compute and querying keystone for glance endpoint

2013-03-19 Thread Lorin Hochstein
Hi All:

I was doing a Folsom deployment from scratch, and when I tried to launch an
instance my compute host failed to connect to the glance server to download
the image, instead it tried to connect to itself.

I can resolve this by putting glance_host=ip into nova.conf. But I'd
prefer if my compute host fetched this information from keystone rather
than hard-code (hard-configure?) like this.

I assume that I don't have the right config in nova.conf (a template for
that file is here:
https://github.com/lorin/openstack-ansible/blob/folsom/playbooks/templates/etc/nova/nova.conf).
However, tracing through the nova code, I couldn't figure out where it was
that the compute host was supposed to connect to keystone to get the right
endpoint for glance.

Where in the nova Folsom code does the nova-compute service query the
keystone service catalog to get the endpoint for glance?

Take care,

Lorin

OK, so I'm not crazy, that means that I really do need to do something like:

 Lorin

Kinda, if using FLAGS.glance_api_servers you still need to specify the port
because the code will default to port 80 if not specified [1]. Also if
your glance server is configured with SSL you would do:

glance_api_servers=https://192.168.206.130:9292

Looking back at the code, your original idea also works. If you just
specify FLAGS.glance_host it will build FLAGS.glance_api_servers based on
your glance_host and the default glance_port [2]. I've always specified the
glance_api_servers flag since it's the only way to specify SSL.

I tried everything I could... But this message persist...

   The namespaces are enabled, look:

   What can I do?

isn't getting its IP via DHCP now... Weird thing is that it was working
couple minutes ago, without disabling namespaces explicitly...

If I add the Instance IP by hand, I can reach the Internet / gateway

   I appreciate any help!

If some devstack developer cloud help you, it's ok. If not, your could run
stack.sh again (install ubuntu again first). It maybe have good chance to
