Thanks but it didn't match my needs. I already know how to deploy Cinder on a single host, my point was more relative to deploying a second Cinder-volume instance, and if yes, what to do. Nevermind, I successed in deploying a second Cinder-volume, just by looking at the packages and the confs. It's pretty straightforward, so I'm not surprised it wasn't documented. Nevertheless, I think that the Grizzly doc I mentioned [1] is confusing : by looking at it, I was thinking Cinder was unable to have two distinct volumes with Folsom release. Re: [Openstack] [Cinder] Re: Multiple machines hosting cinder-volumes with Folsom ?
Hi Sylvain, Great to know that you found how to solve your issue. Thanks for reporting that you found the Grizzly doc confusing. In fact, the Grizzly release introduced the multi-backend feature. This feature allows to have more than one backend on a same compute (ie, to be able to have several cinder-volume running on a same compute). This feature is not available in Folsom: you can only run one cinder-volume per compute (in that case, if you want to manage several backends, you have to have several computes). Thanks a lot for your remarks, Jérôme On Fri, May 31, 2013 at 1:55 PM, Sylvain Bauza sylvain.ba...@digimind.comwrote: Thanks but it didn't match my needs. Havana-1 development milestone available http://lists.openstack.org/pipermail/openstack-announce/2013-May/000107.html The first milestone of the Havana development cycle, havana-1? is now available for Keystone, Glance, Nova, Horizon, Networking, Cinder, Ceilometer, and Heat. It contains all the new features that have been added since the Grizzly pre-release Feature Freeze in March. Including the oslo libraries, 63 blueprints were implemented and 671 bugs were fixed during this milestone. The next development milestone, havana-2, is scheduled for July 18th. So, the 17 seconds and change would be consistent with a transient problem in establishing a TCP connection. Of course, it could just be a coincidence. Later kernels - I forget where in the 3.X stream exactly - have the initial retransmission timeout of 1 second. Right, and upgrades are a different issue than running production systems long-term on mixed versions. Most of the problems between grizzly or trunk ceilometer and folsom have had to do with proof-of-concept deployments where people were trying to install a modern ceilometer on the same server as another component that was older. Because the services require incompatible libraries and were running on the same host using the same site-packages directories, there are conflicts and things broke (either ceilometer, or the other service). Deploying into virtualenvs or using separate hosts will reduce (if not eliminate) these problems. The protocol ceilometer uses to talk over the message bus is compatible between versions, AFAIK, so should not have issues with rolling upgrades. [Openstack] [Swift] Storage Server Redirection
I'm looking at tacking this item: https://blueprints.launchpad.net/swift/+spec/support-storage-server-redirects and wanted to get some feedback on the following observations/thoughts: 1) This is a capability that would be checked in independent of other blueprints that might use it (2 are mentioned in the link above) and unit test code would be the only way to initially exercise it; it essentially enables other activities at this point 2) The basic idea is that an object server (via middleware or otherwise) will be given the ability to respond to a request to indicate 'not me but I know who should handle this'. I'm thinking this makes more sense as a 5xx response with additional information (partition, nodes) about the route included in the response body (as opposed to a 3xx code) 3) The proxy server will be modified to process the response accordingly but using the partition, nodes info from the response as opposed to object_ring.get_nodes() to determine which nodes to use 4) Protection will be required to avoid endless redirection loops 5) This applies only to GET operations Appreciate any thoughts/feedback., In addition to the two usages of this capability referenced in the blueprint I think there's applicable to another Tiering blueprint which interests me as well. Re: [Openstack] VM disk affinity during live migration
Thanks for your reply. Your reply implies that its possible to ensure that the disks stay on the right target manually. What would you have to do to make sure this happened? The SAS space is 228GB the SSD space is only 64GB. So the SAS disk image wouldn't fit on the SSD, but the SSD image would fit on the SAS, so the migration system I imagine wouldn't be able to screw it up since it would have to keep the large SAS image on the SAS target, and would then only be able to place the smaller SSD image on the SSD. But you say it's a work in progress so that could mean anything could happen. What does the actual process look like when I would migrate a VM from one server to another? Re: [Openstack] Remote access to the windows virtual machine
Good catch. Is the license associated with the CloudInit port, or the particular image build, or an issue redistributing Windows? While testing our GRID K2 GPU under different hypervisors, we recently built OpenStack Windows images for kvm, xen, xenserver, and hyper-v using the straight windows installer from Windows evaluation ISOs, but they lacked the CloudInit package. OpenStack cannot handle your case for now, but it has very flexible framework to enable you DIY your migration logic. 1) Make sure SSD or SAS can be reported by nova compute, you might want to update nova compute driver to report those metrics? 2) Add a new scheduler filter to do your logic checking for SSD and SAS. What exactly would I have to do to make sure it went right? ** ** Thanks. ** ** *From:* Alex Glikson [mailto:glik...@il.ibm.com] *Sent:* Friday, May 31, 2013 7:34 AM *To:* ch...@christopherbartels.com *Cc:* openstack@lists.launchpad.net *Subject:* Re: [Openstack] VM disk affinity during live migration ** ** There is an ongoing work to refactor live migration code, including use of scheduler to find/validate placement. Re: [Openstack] Remote access to the windows virtual machine
So the license was specifically given to Cloudbase to allow openstack users have a cloud init enabled Windows image to use for testing Windows workloads on OpenStack. This license applies to the Windows image not the Cloudbaseinit bits. This license is accepted before you download the image from thier site. Using that image directly for production would violate the license you accepted before you download it. That being said, it is technically possible to relicense Windows with a DISM command accepting a new EULA and passing in a valid license. This command can even be run in the user data string of cloudinit. ;) P Sent from my Verizon Wireless 4G LTE Smartphone Original message From: Brian Schott brian.sch...@nimbisservices.com Date: 05/31/2013 7:21 PM (GMT-08:00) To: Peter Pouliot ppoul...@microsoft.com Cc: openstack@lists.launchpad.net,Krishnaprasad Narayanan naray...@uni-mainz.de Subject: RE: [Openstack] Remote access to the windows virtual machine Good catch. [Openstack] Benefits for moving live migration/resize/code migration/provision to conductor
Hi Stackers, I noticed that there are some blueprints trying to move the logic of live migration/resize/code migration/provision from nova scheduler to nova conductor, but the blueprint did not describe clearly the benefits of doing so, can some experts give some explanation on this? I know the original design for nova conductor is for a non-db nova compute, but what's the reason of moving scheduling logic to nova conductor? Actually images for those hypervisors should already be on the Cloudbase site and I encourage you to use those. I have some puppet modules that are still work in progress for automating the Windows adk and deployment process. But you are more than welcome to check them out. Https://github.com/ppouliot/ppouliot-petools This builds a fresh winpe image and files necessary to Pxe on a Windows instance via the adk dynamically. Also Https://github.com/ppouliot/ppouliot-quartermaster Is my Pxe infrastructure including Windows unattended puppet templates. Feel free to check them out. Also I'm more than happy to discuss further if interested. Please don't hesitate to contact me directly.
